IMPORTANTUPDATE: It has been confirmed to me that Donut King is relocating to North Kansas City on Armour Road near NKC Hospital(how convenient! ;)). They are now closed at the Chouteau location and hope to re-open Wednesday the 13th.

It’s the real deal. When the glazed donuts are still fresh and warm, it’s(almost) better than sex. I was partial to the apple fritters tool

What else can I say about a donut shop located next to an exotic dancer place, but awesome?(BTW, it’s moving to a more desirable strip-mall location.) What sets Donut King apart is their custom donuts. Their seasonal donuts are fantastic. I look forward to the fall for their famous pumpkin donuts. Donut King does something I have never seen another donut shop do, create custom donuts on the fly. You pick a donut and they can fill it with the filing of your choice. That’s right, you want that glazed donut filled with blueberry filing they made that day? You got it. You want that chocolate bear claw filled with the Bavarian crème filling? It’s yours. Get out the diabetes-testing strips out before you go… but it’s well worth it!

I don’t call myself a donut connoisseur, because if I were I’d have suffered a heart attack years ago. While I will sometimes indulge in a warm, sugar-encrusted light Krispy Kreme treat, I don’t consider that a real donut. I consider it an overly sugared donut-shaped thingy. Donut King is the real deal. It’s not just a donut. It’s a freakin’ DOUGHNUT. It’s open till like 11 pm I think, the building is purple, and it’s next to Diamond Joe’s. Good or bad, you be the judge. I’ve only been there a couple of times since I don’t live close by, and I’ve enjoyed donuts of many flavors there. But my first and most notable experience was last fall with their pumpkin donuts. Perhaps it was partially my unquestionable dedication for the fall season coupled with the delight of donuts and hot tea on a brisk day, but nonetheless. Not overly sweet, perfectly spiced, and with a nice soft but substantial texture, I found a new mainstay into my fall foods collection.

My brother recently bought a house. A house very far away from me. Unfortunately I hadn’t gone over to see his new purchase due to a busy schedule and my distain for driving around town. Last saturday however I made plans to do so. First things first. I am an amazing navigator. I could find my home no matter what no matter when. That is except in two very confusing(to me at least) settings, parking lots and suburbs. Anyways i managed to make it there. Saw the house, hung out a bit. But as soon as I got back in my car, it was like I was dropped in a distant land. Nothing looked familiar, and i felt like i was driving in circles. Finally after 30 minutes or so I found Chouteau trafficway, which i know because my Grandmother lives off of it. Suddenly i started seeing familiar landmarks(ie, Diamond Joe’s) and then a shining purple beacon of donut… The Donut King. I stepped inside after taking a photo and immediately noticed the metal funnels of different fillings laid out beautifully on a back work table. I then introduced myself to Dianne. Dianne told me all about the Donut King, the process of how they hand make the donuts twice a day. How most of the people that come in are regulars. And that sometimes people are pretty excited to be there, but I took the cake. I asked what her favorites were and she suggested the old fashioned and a long john which is what i went for.(Although, she did recommend everything in the case really.) The long john was the least greasy i’ve ever had, and the chocolate frosting tastes like chocolate. Not frosting, chocolate. The old fashioned is what did it for me though… A perfectly moist sour dough-doughnut with delicate amounts of a, not-to-sweet glaze. To top it off i was going to a barbecue afterwards so i picked up four dozen donut holes for $ 5. Believe me, as weird as it felt to bring«donut holes» to a party, they were a hit. Everyone loved them. In short, this place isn’t very convenient from downtown but they’re open pretty late for a donut spot, and they’re well worth the drive even if you don’t have a brother out there.

Nestled between a «head shop/tattoo parlor» and a nudie bar is a tiny purple oasis specializing in artery clogging goodness. They have these new extended hours they are very proud of. I don’t think I’ll ever want a donut at 11pm but it’s nice to have the option. These donuts are stellar, inexpensive, come in more flavors than you can imagine, and there is a decent selection of beverages. I appreciate the fact that they offer the little half pint cartons of milk versus the 12 or 16oz plastic containers offered everywhere else.

I don’t go to Donut King often. It’s just too dangerous. Dangerous for my ass anyway. It can also be a bit embarrassing, as I usually have to bow humbly before the door, singing donut hymns & praises while other patrons look upon me in sympathy for my «Homer Simpson-esk» addiction. Sigh. They have rows upon rows of glorious and colorful rings of ass-widening goodness. My favorite has got to be the Bavarian crème filled. The crème is sooooo smooth, not grainy. Other honorable mentions are the pumpkin and cherry iced. As much as I love Donut King, I’m very thankful I no longer live down the street. I don’t think my butt could take it. I’m sure some people will suggest that maybe I should exercise some restraint into my donut foraging forays… But I counter with maybe Donut King should start taking some responsiblity for their Donuts and fire up a Donut addiction support group… or at least put up a poster of me with«one per visit limit» written across my forehead…
