If you’re hungry this is one of the very few choices on the menu. I love this hotel for many reasons but honestly Prince you MUST make the late night menu at 9 pm a little more diverse. We could not even get a bread plate!!! This is nuts. Don’t bother going to the coastal grill after 8:30pm stick to room service. Other than this this hotel is tops!

With just over a days notice I was able to get a reservation for our party of 12 the night before Valentine’s Day. The hostess was wonderful, she took the boys(age 5&6) over to the large fish tank and the bartender gave them an up close visit with the fish in the tank. We had a great table, all put together to include the two high chairs, right up front near the glass so we could see the beach and sunset along with hear the live music down at the pool area. Our waitress was great, very attentive and pleasant. The food was delicious, Ahi Nachos were great and the Seafood Trio was some of the best fish I’ve ever had.

I expected a ho-him corporate resort quality meal at a high price, and I was pleasantly surprised by many offerings of local ingredients. Standouts include the chef’s take on tuna nicoise: he served seared ahi with bites of roasted purple sweet potato and taro with steam pohole fern shoots and local cherry tomatoes. For the entrée, I ordered the fish trio – all of which were fresh and cooked slightly underdone how I like it – with steamed greens and sweet potato mash. My dining companion ordered the pork chop, which was cooked perfectly. He substituted local taro hash for whipped potatoes, which was a fantastic choice. The dish was savory and satisfying. They also serve gluten-free bread(sliced sandwich style) upon request. Our waitress was an older local lady who took good care of us and did not hover. We almost felt forgotten in a candlelight corner until the next course arrived, leisurely paced for maximal enjoyment. We were not at all rushed to turn the table. Don’t be put off by the dated late 80’s décor and in-resort location. It’s all a bit cheesy, but the food is good. If you can’t get a table at Merriman’s or Brown’s, Coast Grille is a solid and surprisingly good third choice along the Kohala coast. Arrive in time for sunset, and you will be wowed by one of the best vantages on the island. Also, they offer 10% off the residents of Hawaii with valid state ID. That amounted to a free desert.

I got the pumpkin locavore for dinner and it was delicious — good job Chef Al! He even made me tofu instead of pork belly. All courses were awesome — pumpkin salad with skinny mushrooms, pumpkin gnocchi, mashed pumpkin with tofu and then pumpkin dumplings with dragon fruit for dessert. All very excellent and filling, and nice to have a vegetarian option. Well done!

Wonderful dining experience. They take care to use local ingredients and give you the best of what the Big Island has to offer. We’re from Oahu and frankly are very spoiled, culinary speaking. We brought our Support Puppy with us and they accommodated us like family. «Rocco» even got a hot dog from the staff! 5 stars for their hospitality and making us part of their Ohana. 5 Stars for the best grass fed Big Island Porterhouse eva!!! We’ll be baaaack… Due yourselves a favor Unilocal readers, Skip the feeding trough in the main part of the Hotel and make sure to dine at the Coast Grill… Every meal should be an experience.

Generally good flavors for most food items but poor execution. For instance seared scallops shouldn’t be cooked more than 2 or 3 minutes on each side. The $ 23 seared Hokkaido scallops were cooked for no less than 7 or 8 minutes on each side resulting in a ultra rubbery texture. Similarly the $ 18 seared kampachi was mostly cooked through and could have used some deboning. 5 chinese spiced crab cake just shouldn’t even be on the menu. Love Chinese spices, siracha, and crab cakes but not good combined. This may be the first crab cake we didn’t finish in 10 years. Their main entrees were mostly good so plus points for that. Overall horrible value compared to hundreds of fine dining restaurants we’ve visited. It definitely stands out. Also a friendly advice to the wait staff. Try to refill the bread basket at least once per evening. Most folks will eat the soft one and leave the whole grain one behind. This doesn’t mean they’re content. The whole grain bread is horrible that’s why it’s still there. At most fine dining restaurant they refill the bread basket with missing bread. Cheaper establishments generally wait for the entire bread basket to become empty. Generally if the food is good folks don’t consume as much bread so monitoring the bread refill would be a good indicator of the quality of food being served. Regardless the bread should be fully stocked for table décor. Each small service like this adds on 2−3% tip on top of the base 20% tip. Play a perfect game and you can earn up to 40% tip with some folks like us.

This was so bad we asked for our check before we even ordered our main course. I will say the Mai Tai is one of the best I have ever had. However, we also ordered the Ahi Sashimi and that was horrible. We took one bite and knew something was wrong. How can you screw Ahi Sashimi up in Hawaii?! The other issue was our waitress who quite frankly had very little interest in making sure we enjoyed our meal. Our table was right next to the station where they keep water etc. our waitress was doing something at this station when she simply looked over her shoulder and asked if we were ready to order anything… didn’t approach the table and look at either my wife or I when she asked for our order. It’s very clear the people that work here do t like their jobs and clearly don’t like working with the public. The hotel itself seems to be simply hanging on by a thread and it obvious as you walk through the to get to the restaurant. This place has so much potential that they are just not even trying to live up to. I’d never consider a meal or a stay at this place until some drastic changes are made… we did see the sunset while enjoying our Mai Tai… so there is that. But generally speaking there are far better options on this island than this place.

I always stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel but they are rather limited on their dinner choices so we decided to go next door to try out Coast Grille. The ambiance inside the restaurant definitely needs some upgrading as they even had a tacky 1980s looking neon sign inside. The outside tables have awesome views of the pool and beach though. The service like most hotel restaurants on the island was hit and miss. There were times when we were served promptly and times when we were sitting around waiting for either a dish or an order to be placed. I had the curry and I am a huge curry lover but I was a little let down but the flavor of the dish. The desserts and the drinks were good though.

Shame on you coast grill for only taking reservations for in house guest! This weekend is huge for the food and beverage industry but yet you refuse to allow locals to make reservations. I hope that the guests find alternitive options and in the future you change your policies. We had plans on making dinner reservations as we had in the past years but we are not in house guests so we were deniied a reservation. Good luck to you and in the future we will also make hotel reservations elsewere due to the rudeness of the reservation agent.

The service was good, the ono was overcooked, the spinach salad was good, the desert menu was lacking, the view was great. My husband had the steak and it was good. The Tropical Itch drink was good and my husband enjoyed his Maitai.

Let’s start with the positives first… This restaurant is in the Hapuna Prince Resort, so naturally it has a lavish atmosphere and courteous service. You pay like a prince, you get treated like one. My family and I ate here twice, and I felt like the servers were laid back but very professional. They serve you delicious Hawaiian sweet bread before your meal and instantly replace the basket with a full one once you finish. Try not to fill up on bread because the dishes are very tasty. We had the half grilled chicken and pork chop with mango glaze. Both are good options if you like having cooked vegetables and a starch served with your meat. I overheard a couple next to us rave about the variety of options at this restaurant in comparison to the other nearby resorts. Sounds like it might be the best restaurant of that variety. The view is also very gorgeous as the tables face the world renowned Hapuna Beach. If you’re lucky to get the timing right, you can watch the sunsets from your dinner table. Absolutely stunning. Of course the largest downside to this place is the price. Although the food is good, it’s not outstanding. Roy’s does a much better job at similar dishes for the same $$. Eh, but if you’re on vacation and don’t want to bother the valet to bring your car out, this is a good option, especially with that view!

We are staying at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel for the third year in a row during May. We had never tried their Coast Grille. This trip we got in late, unpacked, were tired and just decided to eat at the hotel restaurant, the Coast Grille. A pleasant surprise. With a reservation made when we checked in, we were seated outside with a beautiful view. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. I am an oyster fan and the oysters here were fresh, large and tasty. The Macademia encrusted Mahi Mahi was some of the best I’ve had. Three nights later, tired after an afternoon of zip lining up near Hawi, we again«just» ate at our hotel’s restaurant, Coast Grille. Although the service not as good, fast or friendly as our first visit, it was slow but adequate. I liked the oysters so much I ordered a dozen and was not disappointed. We both ordered a cup of Gazpacho. When it came we were surprised that each cup had a huge piece of prawn in it which took up half the cup. It didn’t say it came with a prawn on the menu, we don’t like prawn, these were huge and«fishy». The small amount of Gazpacho that remained after we took the prawns out was actually quite good. Other than that, another good meal at the Coast Grille. Oh, the Island Sangria was very good. Recommend Coast Grille and we’ll go back.

Don’t be put off by some of the reviews, this place was delish with the best service we has in the island. Oysters to start, yes imported but the special Mingnonette with mango and chilies were unusual and divine. Lobster bisque was flavorful and petite salad of tomatoes and greens from their garden with lilikoi vinegrette. Yum. Dinner was Kauai shrimp(huge) and garden grown asparagus and purple potato mash plus the absolute best cooked and rubbed rib eye ever. Perfect in every way and so large we came home with a picnic to go for tomorrow(our server even packed up bread for us to make sandwiches) I was pleasantly surprised and I’m a food snob. Also great wine options. Hit it for sunset. You won’t be sorry here. Mahalo coast grill!

The best things about this restaurant are the views and service. The food was just okay — field greens salad was decent, Ono was pretty dry, seafood trio was good, special tasting menu was venison which had some good and some not so good courses. The abalone appetizer was very chewy. The cocktails were decent but nothing to race about. Our waitress, leslie, was very nice and attentive. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back to this place but it was worth going once.

We dined here after my sister’s wedding which was at the Hapuna Suite at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. We were lucky enough to sit at 2 large tables right on the edge of the patio overlooking the ocean. We were a pretty large group with many tastes and preferences. Our 2 waiters took excellent care of us. We all started with wine, cocktails and beer(and we kept them coming). I drank Rombauer all night which is always a treat. We also ordered a bottle of Sake for the bride, lots of Saporro to go around and a few cocktails here and there. Everyone was delighted with libation and the drinks were prompt and quickly re-filed. We then ordered 2 dozen of the oysters for a few of us brave souls to share. They came with various dipping sauces including the ubiquitous cocktail sauce and 2 spicy and sweet Hawaiian vibe sauces. AMAZING! We devoured all 24 of those little sea creatures. The bread on the table were traditional Hawaiian rolls and were amazing. I ordered the macadamia nut encrusted mahi mahi because 1, anything encrusted with macadamia nuts is gonna be good and 2, it’s mahi mahi. It was served with mashed potatoes and green beans. It was delicious and filling and light at the same time. I highly recommend. We skipped dessert in lieu of wedding cake back at the house but these restaurant is a treat for all these who love being treated.

Sooooo overpriced! But if you are staying there you are basically held hostage, as this is the only dinner option. Caesar salad was good. Tuna sashimi was delicious. It was downhill from there. Hubby’s fish trio was not good. My chicken entrée was just ok. The patio area was nice. We lucked out there was a function down by the pool so we saw a free hula show. The highlight of the evening was taking my leftover chicken to the feral cats in the property, which was like a scene out of «The birds» but with cats.

For those who prefer short and sweet… Why wouldn’t you go here, spectacular view, top notch service, delicious food… its excellent. For more detail, read on… While staying at the Hapuna Beach Prince, my wife had her sights set on eating at Manta at the neighboring Mauna Kea. Fortunately, they were booked for a special event and we went to our«back up»… The Coast Grille, located in our own hotel. Thank you Manta for turning us away. I had one of the finest meals I’ve enjoyed in a long time at the Coast Grille.

After eating at the same set of restaurants near our hotel, the wife and I decided to take a date night away from kids and drive north about 20 minutes, to the Coast Grill. We had eaten here several years earlier and remembered the setting being nice, but not much else. We remembered correctly about the setting. And we scored a nice table on the outside terrace with a full view of the wide beach and the sunset. Though it was odd how dead the place was. We both were in the mood for seafood, and so we opted for the same seafood trio on the specials menu: – Ahi was overcooked and dry – Mahi mahi was better, but the Maui onion remoulade was actually just grilled onion pieces that didn’t adhere to the fish. – Ono with mango chutney was easily the best of the three Service was slow; Our water glasses had spots; lots of them; No beer on draft; Just bottles, and only a few, uninteresting choices. The sunset, however, was beautiful. The Mai Tais were strong. Still, the non-amazing food at the usual, hefty Hawaiian prices means we probably won’t return again.

We checked into the Hapuna Beach Prince in the early evening and after we were settled we decided to get dinner. We were kind of tired from travel and just wanted to eat at the resort. I looked into our dining options and saw that there were two restaurants open — Ocean Terrace and Coast Grille. Both menus looked good, atmosphere seemed good, both required«resort attire.» I made the executive decision to go to Coast Grille, which was a bit more pricey than Ocean Terrace. I was just in the mood to have a really nice, quiet dinner. We were not really sure what«resort attire» was. He wore a nice aloha shirt, shorts and leather slippers. I wore a nice shirt and a skirt. When we got there, we seemed a little under dressed, a feeling I never felt before in Hawaii! We didn’t really care, though, and neither did the restaurant. The hostess said she’d have to check on a seat for us and I was afraid that it was going to be a long wait, but within 10 minutes we were seated. We were on a terrace, which I think overlooks the ocean, but honestly, it was so dark we couldn’t see anything. I liked that we were at the end of the terrace near a server stand and in an area that was not very trafficked by anyone except our server, so it was nice and quiet. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and he had a Kona Brewing Big Wave. First off, we were served bread in a bread basket. I had to remind myself not to fill up on bread becuase there was a really good olive loaf in there that I could have wolfed down. It was so salty and yummy with the slightly sweet butter. But, I was really psyched for good seafood, so I laid off! For pupus, we split the Seasonal Oysters in the half shell. I can’t remember where they were from, but they were not local(Sidenote: Do Hawaiian oysters even exist?). Maybe it was the ocean breeze or the drinks, but even though these oysters were not local, they were the best I ever had, I swear! We also split the Ahi Poke Tempura Roll, which was like maki with poke in the middle, then the whole roll was battered and fried. Good too. Not as good as the oysters. We each got a salad, the same salad, the Kamuela Spinach Salad. Kamuela is a town about 12 miles up the road, so if this spinach was from there, it could not have been more local. The salad also had red onion, goat cheese made on the Big Island, house-made bacon, and a warm mustard vinaigrette. This salad was soooo good. The tanginess of the cheese, saltiness of the bacon, creaminess of the cheese, crispness of the spinach. So good. For an entrée he had the Pan Roasted Kurobuta Pork Chops. I don’t have much info on how this was prepared because it was a special that night, but he seemed to really like it. I had the Coast Grille Seafood Trio, which was three Hawaiian fish — Mahi, Ahi, and Ono — cooked however the chef wanted with a side of coconut rice. This was really delicious and exactly what I was in the mood for. The fish pieces were on the small side, but there were three of them, so in the end it was just the right size. We had a look at the dessert menu, but nothing stood out. Plus, we were rather full, so we decided to skip it.
