Hahahaha finally broke 100 on this challenging course!!! This course has everything you could want in a golf course… Ridiculous par 3s that you hit from way, way up. Par 5 with a stone wall right in the middle that is 290 carry from the Blue tees. Peacocks that check out your mistakes and laugh at them. Hit way up and down the mountain. Penalizing fairway even if you make a great drive! Bunkers that can kill your game. Crazy tee boxes that have rough on left, rough in front, massive trees on right — easy-just hit straight– yeah right! I was being driven nuts after double, double, triple but my determination beat the course — yeah right — for one hole! After I finished I noticed my golf app said my handicap went up 2 strokes! Hahahaha If you can shoot well here, you can play almost any other course in Hawaii. MAJOR props for not charging more just because I live on another island in Hawaii. Thank you Makalei — one of my favorite courses on the Big Island!!!

A friendly hilly course with great ocean views. The reasonably priced $ 45 took a lot of the pressure of my game, however the deep grass and brush along the fairways took a reasonable amount of my balls. Easy to miss(I drove by entrance twice, Unilocal has a bad address) if you’re not looking, but it’s on the upper hwy mile marker 30.5

I played this course last week and it was my second time playing it so I figured I would add a review. I have really enjoyed this course both times that I have played it. The elevation changes, the wildlife(Peacocks and turkeys everywhere), the views, and the price all add to the difficulty of this course to make it a must play while on the Big Island. The staff is great as well. Just an all around great experience.

Bill would golf here again. It was pretty windy when we were here. The course is at 2500 above sea level. Great ocean views. With the trees and hills, you are not aware of any other golfers. Well groomed greens but outside the fairway, it is total Hawaii wilderness. They charge $ 25 for ride alongs’, which is not unusual. Bill rented clubs, he is a lefty and they were awesome Taylor Made 9-piece set. With the club rentals they throw in two sleeves of Taylor Made Rocket Balls. One of the greens keeper told us that occasionally they hire outfitters to spend the night and shoot the wild boar! It you don’t like birds, then stay away from here. Birds everywhere, and not just the Hawaii chickens. This is close to Kona and reasonable for Hawaii Golf at $ 99 for 18 holes. They do not have a 9-hole rate, AND weirdly, the clubhouse is accessed between number 12 and 13. The beer cart carries lots of goodies, beer/pop and snacks and she came around twice during our 4 ½ hours of play

The staff was very rude but the course was fun to play. Very little amenities. No tees or water in carts. No water on the course anywhere. When we asked, they said we could buy some. The beverage cart stayed at the turn and the attendant was surly. The manager seemed at a loss over everything. It is more of a local course that barely tolerates visitors.

We wanted to just go hit a bucket of balls. I called ahead of time asking what I needed to know about the driving range and the girl gave me prices and was very friendly. She did however fail to mention that they are closed on Wednesdays(the day we wanted to go) and there is a dress code. I was just frustrated in their lack of communication of those pretty important details.

Theyve got two addresses — the little coffee shop menu has Hawaii Belt Road while the score card as Mamalahoa Hwy. I plugged in Mamalahoa Hwy in the GPS which got us to the course. Coming from Keauhou the course is to the right although the GPS said to make a left. Go figure. Makalei gc is known as the Peacock place. Open a bag of chips or anything that crinkles and watch the peacocks charge over to your golf cart. A very challenging golf course. Built on lava rocks. Lots of up and down and narrow at times. I understand there’s been a drought for the last several years which might explain the brown fairways. I can’t say I’m a fan of this place but green fees are reasonable so for that reason it’s a 4.0 rating.
