I highly recommend calling in your order because it gets soooo busy! My family and I go here all the time when we go around the island. I enjoy getting the steamed pound of shrimp with lots of garlic butter sauce.

Spent my day off with my boyfriend and we were craving garlic shrimp. We came at a good time because there was two families in front of us. Tried the lihing mui pineapples here for the first time, haven’t ate them in a while and it was made with just the right amount of powder! The wait that day was about 15 – 20 minutes and they never disappoint! The seating area is wide with a lot of tables that have a tent, so keeps you nice and cool from the hot sun.

I absolutely loved the taste of the garlic and buttered shrimp. It was amazing and delicious! There was no line when we got there and she mentioned it would take about 30 min. It took over 40 min to get our food. We were staving already. To me it wasn’t worth the wait.

This place is the BOMB! It’s soooo good that I take Benadryl before I go(I’m allergic to shrimp) and I wait the full hour it takes to get your food. My favorite is the number 1 which is Garlic Butter Shrimp! It’s a little price, but it’s worth the price, the wait, and the Benadryl! Hahaha! I looooove the Shrimp at Romy’s!!! CHiiii!!!

I can’t remember the last time I made the trip out to the country for a taste of north shore’s finest shrimp. Although it’s a major tourist stop, there’s good reason why visitors(and locals) love the shrimp they have out there. If you’re coming west and going east bound towards Kaneohe, you can find Romy’s nestled between Fumi’s shrimp and the ever popular Giovanni’s shrimp truck stop. I can’t necessarily say which of these shrimp stops are better than the other, however Romy’s is quite a delicious choice. There’s a big red sign mounted on an old pickup truck with the name Romy’s Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp that will flag driver’s off the main road. There is ample seating located on both sides of the establishment, along with sink basins to wash off your hands, an ATM(they accept cash only), and available men’s and women’s bathrooms in the back. This business is a legit farm-to-table eatery. They harvest their shrimp in a farm directly behind the kitchen and have everything made-to-order, so expect a bit of a wait for the shrimp to cook. Romy’s has a pretty extensive menu on what shrimp they offer. Anything from butter garlic, steamed, sweet and spicy, or fried. My friends and I decided to order the one pound steamed w/butter garlic and sweet and spicy sauces. For sides you can add on white or brown rice, salad, corn on the cobb, or chilled pineapple(lihing mui optional). I shared with my boyfriend and we both devoured all the shrimp on our plate including all the rice. The shrimp come shelled with head’s attached, so if eating it as-is isn’t your thing you will have to put in some work for your meal, but it’s totally worth it. Overall I enjoyed the shrimp they have here. It was tasty, cooked well, and actually tasted like real sea food. If you’re having trouble deciding on which shrimp stop to pull up to, give this place a try! It’s not as crowded as Giovanni’s and you’re still getting really good food!

The food was okay. We wanted to get a combo but it was over a hour wait. So we got a pound of steamed shrimp with a the sweet and spicy, and the butter garlic on the side sense we were told we couldn’t get it on top. We also tried the pineapple and corn which were okay. They have a nice sitting area for being outside.

One of the quintessential activities on any«Circle Oahu drive» is to eat at one of the shrimp stands lining along Kamehameha Highway between Haleiwa and Kahuku. For many people this means choosing among Giovanni’s, Fumi’s, Romy’s or the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck and picking shrimps sautéed in either butter garlic or hot-and-spicy sauce. When the No1DP was asking for suggestions for lunch at the rental car place the guy helping him out said this was his favorite shrimp truck. This particular shrimp stand sources their own shrimp as they have their own farm in the back. They cook their shrimp fresh daily so you’ll never have to eat frozen shrimp. Compare this philosophy to Giovanni’s that cook their shrimp frozen and«sources local when they can, international when they can’t». You can’t miss Romy’s, it’s the big red stand with the company logo out front. There’s plenty of seating on both sides of the stand. Their specialty is crispy shrimp followed by «fried sun fish»(essentially fried tilapia). I was a bit bummed on our visit because to order their butter garlic shrimp sautéed would require an hour wait time. There were a few people that were willing to wait that long. No1DP and I didn’t have the time so we opted to get steamed shrimp with the same sauce on the side — wait time was 15 minutes. Meals come with small salad and corn-on-the-cob, and since we had a big dinner that day, shared one combo meal to ourselves. Notables about our meal: — No prawns as their prawns aren’t big enough to harvest. — Shrimp are served with their heads on. This is notable that they are one of the few places that do so. The best part about leaving the heads intact is sucking the heads or pouring that sauce onto the rice. — The shells were soft enough that No1DP can eat the shrimp with the shells on but I still had to peel my shells. They were easy to peel. — Shrimps were medium-sized and tasted fresh. — Butter garlic was good enough to pour on the rice and eat that by itself. — Side salad was on the plain side. There’s bathrooms in the back but a separate sink for washing hands is in the same area as the tables. Don’t mistake the condiment bottle, it’s actually soap. Thanks to the No1DP for taking me here as I finally got to try fresh shrimp straight from a Kahuku shrimp farm! Looking forward to another visit where I get to try their prawns marinated in butter garlic sauce.

Stopped by during a raining day and we were not disappointed. They took our order and advised that it typically takes ½ hour to have it ready. It is normal to wait, hence be ready to wait. It is worthy waiting for it. The shrimp are delicious and it comes with a side of rice and butter sauce.

4 stars because of the following 1. My garlic was a little too burnt for my liking 2. Way too many flys(I know they don’t have control of that) 3.hour wait for food??? While there was no one else there. We luckily placed our order ahead of time(definitely recommended), so we got it quickly. Food, it was delicious and definitely worth the trek to get it.

This was by far our favorite stop in Hawaii. They have a few signs posted saying this is not fast food but good food. Those of you complaining about the wait — you can’t say you weren’t warned! We waited 45 minutes for our shrimp and it was well worth the wait. I like that the shrimp comes from the farm located in the back and not Thailand(like Giovanni’s). Look into child labor and shrimp farms in Thailand and you will only want shrimp from the USA. Food was great. Wait was worth it. Shrimp is from the USA(and crazy fresh!!) If you want good shrimp, come here. You won’t be disappointed!

Alright, let me dive right in. I decided to do a mini kahuku shrimp truck your during my last Hawaii trip and boy oh boy was it enlightening(and delicious!). I don’t come to kahuku often enough to compare trucks between visits so this was a really fun experiment. Romy’s definitely had the best tasting shrimp. The garlic has a shoyu kick to it that makes it really really yummy. The«spicy shoyu» sauce that came with the garlic shrimp really just tasted like shoyu and Tabasco but what do I know. I skipped it for the rest of the meal. Shrimp also comes with the head on so you get a bit more meat than your other options. if you’re into shrimp heads. The main drawback to Romy’s, compared to the other options is 1. the wait time(20 – 45 mins with no line, is what the sign says) and 2. it costs a bit more and the tax isn’t included in the listed price($ 13.75+tax = $ 14.40 as compared to $ 13 at the other locations). There was no line when we went and our shrimp took about 25 mins to come out. Estimated wait time if there is a line is 35 – 75 mins. So good luck. The shrimp was really good though and there was ample shaded seating and a sink to wash up post-garlic storm. I’d label this place more contemporary than classic though. I still maintain that Giovanni’s up the street is your best option for classic kahuku shrimp experience.

What’s not to like. They are not as touristy as Giovanni and their shrimp is always good. They haven’t had prawns in awhile since they’re waiting for them to get larger. You may wanna call in your order ahead so you don’t need to wait but in general you need to wait at least thirty min for them to cook the food I come here every time I go to kahuku for their shrimp trucks

We tried Giovanni’s, Fumi and Romy and Romy is the best. Here they cook to order and the shrimp is whole with heads. Tasted fresh and delicious. We got misled by Unilocal review and went to Giovanni. Their garlic shrimp don’t task fresh. They seem to cook in large batch because the fried garlic was soggy. We just threw away the plate after a couple of taste. Fumi is okay. They have two places not two far apart. «Fumi once, get some okay shrimps, Fumi twice, you get the same.»

Here are my very important tips for Romy’s : Tip #1.) Call in your order! It is an absolutely must to call in your order, no matter if phone is busy, just keep trying. This will save you 2 hours.!! I was lucky the last 3 times on my visits to Romy’s. Tip #2.) Bring Alcohol & your drinks– pack your cooler! Tip #3) Bring extra rice, If your family loves rice like mines, bring rice. The rice provided is not enough for us.(I usually bring another 2 cups) Tip # 4) Bring some side pupus, to go with your Romy’s plate lunch. kim chee, poke, pickled veggies. — Sure goes great together! Tip # 5) Bring Cash, lots of Cash. — Cash only! Tip #6) Always get your stamps, ask for stamp card. This entitles you to a free plate after you collect 10 stamps. The folks at Romy’s will celebrate * announce your names along with ringing the bells, when you reach your free plate. Tip #6) Be patient, as it is not fast food. Be prepard to wait, this is if you didn’t call in your order. Sometimes, 2 hours wait. — standing in line & waiting for your food. Tip #7) Avoid lunch time crowd, best time to go @ after 3 pm. — noticed my last visit, no line around this time. Tip #8) if you place order, you DONOT need to wait in line, go straight to window to inform cashiers. Tip #9) get your coupon on Romy’s website for a free drink or bottle water, with plate lunch purchase. Tip #10) When you see the shrimp ponds, the Romy’s flag, & the red little house, the picnic tables, you are at the right place! ROMY’S! FYI– Romy’s now has sinks & clean bathrooms & not portable toilets. My family loves coming to Romy’s! We look forward to our round the island ventures especially on Good Friday, our family tradition, since we are not allowed to eat meat on this day! We have tried other shrimp places(won’t name them) we can tell the differences. My kids, my mom, my husband, and including myself. Romy’s shrimp are huge, fresh, and comes with heads. Good for sucking the yummy goodness out of the those crustaceans. The plate also comes with the shoyu chili sauce, and yummy fried garlic. All this together is so worth the one hour drive from town. Note: extra charge for extra sauce, 50 cents. Extra charge for garlic, 1.50. I usually get an extra cocktail sauce so I can alternate. It is going to be messy, be prepared to use your fingers to peel your shrimps, this is if you order #1. This is our order, #1– the garlic butter. Besides shrimp, Romy’s also has sun fish,(sold by the pound) panipopo, Kahuku corn, pineapples with li-hing, and salad. Cashier are very friendly. The younger gentlemen is the friendliest, he is my favorite cashier. They do work very hard. Last minute thoughts before I post: My recent 2 visits, they don’t have prawns, the prices for a shrimp plate now is 13.75 —(Keeps going up!) Here is the number to Romy’s #232−2202 Call now! It’s always a debate between going Romy’s or Giovanni’s. I’ve always been going to Giovanni’s cause that’s where everyone wants to go. But finally I came here… We headed out at 1pm from Kaneohe, on the way we called and called and called to put in an order. Finally got through when we were almost there. We got lucky since there was parking and waited about 30mins before getting our plates. Tip: YOU gotta keep trying. if not you’ll order there and wait is a minimum 1hr! some people don’t get their plates for 2−3hours… that’s how crazy it is… Their shrimps have the head on … not the prawns. which they serve here too but only in season. They serve white rice and brown rice or you have the option of getting hapa rice(one brown, one white). I got #1 butter garlic plate w/hapa rice. The plate comes with the rice, shrimp and garlic chunks on top: D and they have a spicy shoyu to dip. To me shrimps that still have the heads gives you a better idea of how fresh the shrimp is… So good! IF you don’t mind waiting I totally recommend coming! You can always get their pineapple or corn while you wait.

Two stars at most. The shrimp wasn’t cleaned(deveined) and lacked flavor. I had to spit out the spicy sauce because it was gross. The corn tasted days old and was very wrinkled and brown. The pineapple was good but for the prices I’m still not sure why so many people rave about this place. :(

The food? No problem, it’s really, really good. The shitty attitude from the hipster behind the counter? That gets the one star. I know I’m a haole; I’m a haole that’s lived here for 15 years. Not a tourist, so maybe spend a minute to say«hi, may I help you?» instead of looking at me like I’m some dumb asshole that only knows«ohana» from Lilo and Stitch. The hell with this place. There are multiple options that taste just as good and don’t come with an attitude. ****UPDATE**** Should have waited to write this until the food came. Burnt garlic and cold. Last time coming here. Probably why there are so few people on a Saturday.

It never fails! I just love how they make the garlic, it’s so flavorful Surprisingly, today the food was ready a lot quicker than their quote time of 45mins! The food could have be a little hotter, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. However, next time… I will call the order in advanced so I can just pick it up instead of waiting in the long line. I have tried other Kahuku shrimp trucks… Romys is still my #1.

I was really excited to try this place, we drove up at about noon and they were already out of fried shrimp. Immediately after hitting up Giovanni’s, the boy-o and I went to Romy’s to meet up with friends & exchange shrimp plates(for scientific testing purposes, of course). I gotta say, while I’m glad I was able to try both famed dishes, I wasn’t a huge fan of Romy’s. OVERALL. — Cash only(with an on-site ATM — mind the fees) — Fairly long wait times(we waited 45 minutes for our order) — Prawns are seasonal only(aka not around in January when we went) — The garlic shrimp here isn’t terribly flavorful compared to other places I’ve been to, and a little more disappointing — Large serving sizes, which are proportionate with the pricing Pro-tip: if you’re going to eat here, prepare yourself for the wait and bring a six-pack of your favorite beer to pass the time(and compliment your meal).

Five stars for: 1. Freshness — the shrimps were intact with their heads attached! 2. Taste — garlic sauce had other ingredients besides butter which resulted in a fuller flavor! 3. Amenities — the convenient sink and restroom(separate building with a ramp) is a big plus! 4. Customer service — Aloha spirit lives here in the sunshine and fresh air! 5. Overall quality and atmosphere — picnic tables under large tents and pleasant ambiance! Most people talk about Giovanni’s Garlic Shrimp. My two buddies, Daniel and Paul, raved about Romy’s. I just had to check it out and make a comparison. Wow — the garlic shrimp sauce is so good that I dove into that rice covered in orange-colored goodness! If you like garlic, order«double garlic». However, regular was good enough for me! I had difficulty breathing because I was wolfing down that garlic sauce with rice! Really! I had to focus, stop, and take a breath! It was so ono!!! «Broke da mouth!» There were eight large shrimps on a bed of white rice. The sauce is an orangey color from the shrimp heads! The other places had a more yellow colored sauce from butter. It’s too bad that the prawns weren’t in season yet. There was a sign posted that the size were not up to par, so they wouldn’t be serving prawns until they reached maturity. That’s cool because it means that I’ll return and try double garlic next time! Notes: when driving to Kahuku, look for the small red building. They take credit cards now! Remember to ask for a stamp card! Enjoy!

I think this is –hands down– the best shrimp truck on the north shore — but… You will have to WAIT for the deliciousness Every time I come here there is at least a 30 min wait. But to me– it’s worth it. I usually get an order of their Li-hung pineapple($ 3) for a snack while I wait. You can also sneak across the street to kahuku farms and get a plantation iced tea. Their garlic shrimp is also different than the other trucks on the north shore — it’s more of a fried garlic flavor.(You can see by the photos). This flavor may not be for everyone — but the shrimp are cooked well. They are firm, juicy, and sweet — pairing them perfectly with the fried, blackened, buttery garlic sauce. For extra flavor — they have a container with some sort of spicy soy sauce included in the plate. On the«con» side. Besides the wait — it’s also a bit pricey as the plate just comes with rice and shrimp. If you want salad and other items it will cost extra

I’ve always despised the wait time for ordering and waiting for the food here, but that all changed when I found out you could do phone orders! That is so convenient for us coming from any where on the island! Parking can be a pain depending what day your going, the time, and if it’s a rainy day or not. But luckily we were able to get good ones. Seating is great, there’s seating on both sides and across the shrimp farm. It is cash only but I believe they have an ATM at the location. The food may be pricey but it’s well worth it. Its local raised shrimp/prawns, so you are getting the good stuff. The garlic butter sauce and the soy mix dipping sauce is AMAZING. If I could, I would eat that with rice. No shrimp needed! Lol. They also have other shrimp orders like sweet & spicy or the steamed, all are so tasty! I recommend bringing your own drinks tho! They do have washing stations & restrooms too. You must try!

My friend suggested we stop here for prawns but they were sold out by the time we arrived. Instead of venturing to Giovanni’s we settled for this place and was pretty pleased. The portions are enormous and the shrimp is pretty plump. They have plenty of seating and a decent bathroom for its location. My friends ordered the garlic and butter, spicy and sweet, and the sunfish. The garlic and butter tasted better than the spicy and sweet. I found the spicy and sweet to be a tad bit too sweet. I was a little disappointed but the food was tasty regardless. Expect to get into your food and be messy. Don’t be shy because they have huge sink basins near the tables to wash up. Service is great and they forewarn you that this is not«fast food» but good food. You will wait approximately 30 minutes(give or take a few minutes) and it will be worth the wait. Prices for Romy’s is decent and not too expensive. I would recommend this place to someone.

A top tourist attraction that’s for sure. I’ve visited Romy’s quite a few times and although they aren’t very busy, I’ve waited up to an hour. Thankfully I’m a patient person, but be prepared to wait. As soon as your order is up, your food will be gone quicker than the time you’ve waited for your food sadly… buts that’s just to show how great the garlic shrimp is. Trust. I am ALWAYS rooting for Romy’s whenever it comes down to the whole Giovanni vs Romy’s debate(even tho they’re totally different styles of shrimp haha) but I was extremely disappointed after my family’s annual Christmas Day trip there. Line was crazy long, like always. I stepped in line underneath the hot sun and remembered that I could just phone order, work smarter not harder right? Luckily someone picked up, I ordered 12 butter garlic shrimp plates, they said 45 min — 1 hour wait, which I expected. I sat back down and surprisingly less than 30 mins later our food was ready! I was so excited. We all got to eating and then realized something. Our shrimp was soft and mushy, to the point of baby food making it difficult to peel. I thought it was just my plate but then ALL the plates were like that. The flavor was there but the shrimp’s texture was just ruining the experience for all of us. I’m not sure why the shrimp was like that I don’t know if it was old shrimp or overcooked(but wouldn’t it be hard?). The line was so ridiculously long that making a complaint now would’ve been crazy but now that I think about it we’re paying like $ 13 a plate, we should get fresh shrimp right? UGH so frustrating, we’ve been coming here for years and this is the first time the shrimp was like this. Hopefully it won’t happen again and I’ll definitely say something next time.

Our friend, who is a local, praised Romy’s and said that it was far better than the overly hyped Giovanni’s. Romy’s has their own shrimp farm behind the picnic tables so you can take a look but the pond is so murky you likely won’t see anything exciting. WAIT — If you come on a weekend, expect to wait an upwards of 1.5 hours. It took us an hour to get to Romy’s from Kaneohe, another 1.5 hours just to order and an additional 1 hour for our food to come out. BUTTERGARLICSHRIMPSCAMPI — You have the option of choosing between shrimp or prawns. Since they had run out of prawns by the time we were up, we ended up ordering the butter garlic scamp shrimp plate. The plate comes with 2 scoops of rice but you also have the option of ordering a combo, which comes with 2 scoops of rice, corn, salad and a refillable soda. The shrimp was drowned in butter and garlic, which gave some powerful flavor. Their spicy shoyu sauce is a total killer. It brought out the garlic even more and gave the shrimp a bit more zest. I can’t say the shrimp itself was anything special, which speaks to their prawns always selling out first. Their portions are very generous as I was able to share this with another person and leave satisfied. Unless you plan to go vampire hunting after, I suggest you thoroughly wash your hands at the outdoor sinks.

Pros Butter Garlic Scampi: What stood out for the shrimp here compared to their competitors was their generous use of garlic in each serving. Romy’s also stood out and took the time to brown up their chunks of garlic to add more depth and flavor to the butter garlic sauce. Rice: Out of all the 4 shrimp trucks I tried out, Romy’s was the only place that served their rice without being soggy and mushy. Their rice topped with their garlic sauce was actually edible so kudos to not giving out mushy rice. The only disappointment I experienced was not trying out their huge juicy prawns since their prawns wasn’t in season for October. I would definitely return to Romy’s for their prawns and also order their fried sunfish since it looked appetizing as well.

Last time I went to Romy’s was in January 2015, I love their prawns with garlic sauce and my husband loves the fried shrimp wrapped in wonton paper. The wait can take about 45 minutes to 1 hour but it’s worth it. We are always prepared to bring stuff to read or play on our Iphone’s and Ipad’s. I remember last time when I went, they had this HORRIBLE, GROSS port o potty(see previous review) and when we came back this time, they actually built his and her bathroom(see picture). That is so sweet! I didn’t get a chance to use it(the memory of the port o potty from early this year still haunts me) but when I go next time and I’m desperate, I might visit it.

I absolutely love this place! They have the best Kahuku shrimp and prawns. This has been my go to spot for all my friends visiting HI or when I’m craving Kahuku shrimp/prawns. I’ve been coming here for years and it’s because they are consistent with their quality of food. They don’t serve fast food, they serve good food. Over the years I have redeemed many stamp cards for free plates. Make sure to get one when you come. You’ll be addicted after and will fill them up fast! You get one stamp per plate you purchase. They even allow you to consolidate cards to get a free plate if there are a total of 10 stamps. This isn’t a shrimp truck but a red food stand in Kahuku. It’s got a red sign, red walls and red picnic style tables to eat on. Over the tables are giant tents that protect you from the weather while you’re eating. They have garbage bins for you to dispose of your empty plates and sinks for you to wash you hands after eating. There is even an ATM to the side since they are cash only. If you need to use the restroom, they have porta-potty’s. I would highly recommend you make a phone order 20 – 35 minutes before you arrive. They are very busy and there is not only a line to order but a pretty long wait time from ordering your food to receiving your food. If you’re not in a rush then no worries but I rather spend that time chilling on the beach. They have both Kahuku shrimp and prawns. The prawns are very popular and sell out quick. Both are good but I like the prawns better. I’ve tried their entire menu and my favorite is the butter garlic prawns. It comes over rice. Garlic butter shrimp is my second favorite item here. We usually order li-hing pineapples and water with our meals. It’s a perfect sized meal before going to the beach.

What happened to this place?! This was my favorite place to get shrimp plates on the island and today was just a huge disappointment. I normally come here every once in a while and usually get the #1(Butter Garlic Shrimp). I usually have to wait 45 minutes to an hour, but even though it was a Saturday today, it was not busy at all. There were only 2 people ahead of me, but when I got to the window, the cashier said the wait would be about 45 minutes. I thought, um, okay, it’s not that big of a deal. So I ordered the usual #1 plate, with a corn on the cob and 2 orders of the cold li hing mui pineapples. I got the li hing mui pineapples immediately after I paid. My food came out after only about a 20-minute wait, but I noticed that the people who had ordered after me got their food before me. Like I said, it was not a busy day at all. So that was strange. Secondly, I got my corn on the cob separately way after I got my shrimp plate. Also strange. But, whatever, I thought… the main thing is the shrimp. I opened my plate and it was already pretty cold. The garlic was burnt, pretty much CREMATED! Because of this, the overall flavor was just bitter, bitter, bitter. I was annoyed, but what could I do, right? I started to eat the shrimp and noticed that they weren’t cleaned/deveined well. And to just make matters even worse, half of my shrimp looked«premature». They were buried under the bigger pieces of shrimp. Overall, I would’ve normally rated this place at least 4 stars, but it has gone down to about 2 stars. I’m annoyed that I had to pay $ 13.25 + tax for subpar food. I would understand the occasional inconsistencies in the food the serve if the establishment’s menu was extensive, but it’s not, so I’m very disappointed. I get that it’s not«fast food» like the many signs posted around the place reminds us, but if that’s the case, don’t compromise on the quality either.

We are out on an adventure to Haleiwa! My friend has been wanting a garlic shrimp plate for months. Finally, this day has come. We took the bus to search for Giovanni but somehow we thought we passed that food truck so we ended up at Romy’s. There was a 30 minute wait for a shrimp plate. There was a line too. But we decided to wait. We got the garlic and butter shrimp. It comes with 6 – 7 pieces of shrimp and 2 scoops of rice. The rice looks messy. The plate cost $ 14. I ate the shrimp and it tasted quite salty. Nothing special. Overall, like my friend said it was all about the experience even if the plate wasn’t too good.
