Really enjoyed this place. Old school bar friendly environment food was home cooking. Portions are huge so don’t let your eyes eat. Good food will definitely be back. Just a cool old school place to eat and enjoy friendly people and staff and food like mom’s.

I visited Thayer Bros for the first time tonight with the Men’s Group from my church. I was very impressed with the quality of the food, the service staff, the size of the portions and especially with«Mama» Thayer. She visited our table several times to check how everything was and to ask if we wanted anything. There were nine people in our party and before we had even ordered, they brought a bowl(not a cup) of soup for each of us. After we had placed our orders, Mrs. Thayer asked if anyone wanted more soup. I ordered the«Thayer Bros Classic» sandwich. It is a sandwich in name only because it was piled so high with Italian Beef that I couldn’t fit it into my mouth and had to eat it with a knife and fork. The rest of the plate was piled full with pasta salad and french fries. I finished with a slice of Banana Cream pie that was fantastic! The only drawback is that they don’t have a soda fountain, so pop is $ 1.25 a can. On the other hand, they do have both Coke and Pepsi. They do have free refills on coffee and iced tea. Also, I read a review that complained about the parking lot. There is an unpaved, public lot on the west side of the restaurant that is filled with craters but there is a paved lot just for Thayer customers a half block to the east.

I visited Thayer Bros Deli yesterday for the first time and it was amazing. I had the best clam chowder soup I ever had. The food is truly homemade and you can taste the freshness. There are new specials each day. I will be back even for just a cup of soup.

Today was our second time to eat there. The food was great and it’s homemade! We will go back regularly! The service is good! The spinach salad was great and the dressing, hot Bacon Dressing, yummy! The white fish was great! The Banana Cream pie and the Chocolate Cream pie was incredible!

This place could be a bit cleaner, that’s true. But it is a homey, neighborhood spot that has a lot of charm. Mama Thayer makes most of the food herself, from scratch, and with love. Also, it is not widely known, but many of the regulars pay a little extra so that Mrs. Thayer can provide meals to some of the neighbors who are less fortunate. Its a nice little place, run by a very sweet lady.

Great atmosphere and exceptional service. On our second visit the waitress recognized us and all servers have acknowledge their regulars and treat us as family. Love Mrs. Thayer– you feel like you are eating at your Grandmothers kitchen. This is not a fancy place, its a comfortable environment. Chicken Soup is always available with a long package of saltines right out of the box. Beverage is a can of pop and a glass of ice or something from the adjoining tavern. Dinner/Lunch options are written on a blackboard or can be ready up close from a small legal pad. No glitz or gloss, just friendly Midwestern people who know how to treat customers. Love the sides that always seem to have a unique mixture prepared from fresh vegetables. Bring Cash/No Atm– Parking not great. Despite those inconveniences, it is still a great experience.

Went here for a nice birthday dinner. Was sat at a sticky table in the corner that looked like it had two weeks of food stuck to it. Time for a deep cleaning here folks. We ordered our food which was pretty good, but not worth the price. Then when our bill came they told us they do no take credit cards cash only. They did mention they had an ATM available for customers to use in the bar. How convienet for the business. Have an ATM which you collect a fee from customers instead of the cusiness paying a small fee for a credit card transaction. I am sorry that I will not be back to this resturant. The business owner seemed like a nice person.

Everything we ordered all tasted like grease, not a lot of vegetarian options as a matter fact almost none except for the mac/cheese. If grease is what you want then you need to go there.

Great food, friendly service. Delicious soup… just ask for more if you would like some! Good selection of specials at very reasonable prices. There is an attached bar that is great for after your meal… a REAL sports bar! Not a modern imitation.

Very comfortable inside, but food could be better. Maybe it is what I order, but it is never completely what I expect. Soup was a bit greasy, salad had brown pieces in it and the fish was too salty, so that is why I say the food could be better. If you get something with grilled vegetables, then that takes over the entire plate where you would expect the main entrée to do that– had that happen twice. Overall, the place isn’t bad, but just lacking some attention to details. I used to be a server and would not serve salad with brown pieces in it, but I guess that is just me. I also think it is overpriced. To be honest, I don’t expect much from Joliet restaurants and this place fits right in line with that attitude.

Great homemade food! We all ordered soup with our meals(awesome chicken and dumpling) and finished it quick. Mrs. Thayer came by and asked if we wanted another bowl(on the house). The rest of the meal was just as good. Fresh and made to order home cooking. Small dining room with a neighborhood bar attached next door.

They have some really great food. The soup and pasta salad were obviously made in house and were delish! The deli sandwiches were made with quality meats, cheeses, and great bread. Worth stopping by there every once in a while!

Small restaurant adjoining the bar. Momma Thayer is apparently the woman behind the food, and the food is really good. I had a delicious reuben. Know what else Momma Thayer is good at making? Beautiful, athletic boys. Tom Thayer(holla ’85 Bears) was there the day we had lunch. Momma T. was such a sweetheart, I was knocked up at the time and she gave me a stuffed football for the baby. Great ‘hometown” establishment.
