Other than the fact that this place can be tough to find, everything else was great. Tastings by appointment only but they were very flexible. We liked all of their wines, and the tasting room staff was very friendly. We will definitely be back. Seems like it is a great place to hang out after your tasting.

Friends and I spent an afternoon with the wine maker of Lewis Winery Duncan McNabb. Duncan a co owner with Doug Lewis add a special attention to detail, personal touch, and the fact they only use 100% Texan grapes they have a winner on their hands. For being a young winery 5 years old they have been proven themselves to be a winery to be reckoned with. There Swim Spot in 2013 received recognition for White Wine of the Month. It was refreshing and delicious! There 2012 Newsom Tempranillo was smooth and I can’t wait after it has been in my cellar for a yeast will probably blow my socks off. You need an appointment to visit this winery so give them a call. I promise you will not be disappointed.

This is a great place with great wines. It is off the beaten path a bit(you have to watch for the sign closely) and then you feel like you drive through a field to get to the pavilion where you can taste wines but the drive is worth it. We collect a lot of wine and visited six wineries this weekend and this one boasted a knowledgeable and friendly staff, very good wines, and a non-stuffy atmosphere. The pavilion isn’t huge and doesn’t look like Tuscany — but let’s be honest, I’d rather drink awesome wine in a simple and neat tasting room than crap in a fancy place so Lewis Wines has it where it counts. One note — google maps didn’t work for this winery — we had to pay attention because the GPS took us to the wrong place entirely, it’s about 12 minutes closer to Johnson City than GPS thinks it is based on the address. Dog friendly also. Lastly, don’t forget to make an appointment — they keep the groups small to give personalized attention and it’s a nice touch. Highly recommend!

After having gone to a large number of the Hill Country Vineyards I can confidently say this is one of the best. Great wine, fantastic atmosphere.

Very impressed. Located directly off of the Wine Road on your way to Fredericksburg, you must call for an appointment to taste these wines but they are a grade above most other Fredericksburg wineries! Their new tasting room is modern and allows dogs if you sit in their beautiful new outdoor space with fans and lots of shade from the Texas summer! Will be back!

Lewis Winery was our first stop on our Fredericksburg trip, and we really enjoyed our time there. Because an appointment is needed, you definitely get the personal experience. Our timing was great, because they just opened up the new tasting room the week before. The patio was beautiful, and we could’ve stayed there for hours enjoying the great wine and views of the vineyard. Highly recommend!

Lewis Wines was recommended by another winery — a good sign before we even visited. Don’t go for aesthetics though as this is a very young winery with its tasting room in it’s wine storage and operations room. The bare bones approach doesn’t hurt the quality of wines and that’s why we visited anyway. Lewis Wines also only uses Texas grapes, something I was interested in exploring as I’ve tried California grapes at California wineries. We purchased three of the five wines we tasted and I believe this winery isn’t even close to its potential yet. Check this place out as you may have difficulty in the future when they become better known.

From our trip back in May 2014 this was by far the best tasting wine(and it was our first stop at 11am so no booze talking). The wine makers themselves were there and it was very small and intimate setting. I almost wish we had not gone there first because I was a tad disappointed the rest of the day. The other wines in Fredericksburg did not taste as good and had more corporate feel after we had gone to Lewis Wines. The winemakers were the most knowledgeable people we came into contact with after all 4 wineries. Since then we have been to Napa and I still think Lewis Wines could compete, while the rest of Texas wines are easily shamed into the cheap grocery store category. We are planning another visit which reminded me I had never written a review. We will definitely be back as this was a crowd favorite for all four of us ladies with different palates. Great service and great experience!

All it sometimes takes is some young guys with big ideas, passion, and hard work and presto… you have a great winery making some really good wine and establishing a name for itself! This small winery located just west of Johnson City is putting out a good array of wines that are 100% Texas hand crafted wines. Bottom line, you really, really, need to check out the wines from these guys! Owners Doug Lewis and Duncan McNabb(Pedernales Cellars«graduates») started making their own wine label in 2010 and opened for tasting by appointment a couple of years ago. They have a local estate vineyard of about seven acres recently planted this year with focus on Portuguese varietals like Tannat and Touragi and others. They also source grapes from a vineyard near Round Mountain as well as the Texas High Plains. Let’s start with the whites. The first on the list is Swim Spot(2013). Made from a blend of Blanc du Bois(73%) and Chenin Blanc(27%), it’s quite refreshing for those final days of Texas summer in November! The other white, 2012 Texas White Wine, is a blend of Viognier(52%) and Chenin Blanc(48%). It encompasses the best qualities of both varietals. The 2013 Chenin Blanc is made from grapes from Mesa Verde and is quite nice, as well. Their 2013 Rose from Mourvedre is a hint of soft pale pink that could pass as an adult refreshing summer time beverage… think softer than pink lemonade shade. The 2011 Texas Red Wine is a blend of primarily Mourvedre and Tempranillo along with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a lovely lingering finish that’s best described as «wow»! The 2011 Merlot has its grapes sourced from Granite Hill Vineyards. Yep, the same grapes you may have had from William and Chris and Compass Rose’s Merlot version. Lewis Wines has kept the high standard from this vintage and vineyard and made their own great Merlot, as well. So store these Merlot bottles in your private stash! The Parr Tempranillo, sourced from Parr Vineyards in Mason County, is to die for. Only 198 cases produced of this one so get some while the gettin’ is good, as they are sure to be gone soon. Lewis wines has done quite well with the Tempranillo grape that has helped put Texas on the world wine map. But the best is for last! The 2011 Newsom Reserve is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon(55%), Cabernet Franc(31%) and Malbec(13%). It’s a twist on their own Bordeaux style wines that packs some pleasure for the true red wine aficionado. It just damn good… what else needs to be said! It just has one of those beautiful finishes that lasts and lasts and a great bouquet. It makes you crave for more! Lewis Wines shows great promise in contributing quality Texas Hill Country wines to the growing list. So, come visit, chat, and enjoy their own piece of Texas Hill Country setting with some of their wine! You will not be disappointed. Cheers and well done!

This is definitely our favorite winery in The Hill Country! It’s small, unassuming, and still getting established, however, service is wonderful, the small team that runs it are friendly, and we had the best experience overall from this visit to the TX wine country. We would join their wine club if we weren’t living all the way in NM.

A definite up-and-comer in the Texas wine scene. All of their wines are 100% sourced from Texas, and their own Estate grapes are organic. The care turns up in the wines. The whites are impressive, especially the Chenin Blanc and Viognier, which are balanced in acidity and feature bright tropical fruits. Among the reds, their Tempranillo is medium bodied and has mild tannins sure to age well. The winemaker’s touch is light and allows the strength of the terrior to come though. The small production facility is currently doubling as the tasting room, but I love seeing the process. Its’ views are among the best on the Texas wine trail, so pull up a seat at a picnic table outside, bring some cheese, and enjoy excellent wine!

This was my first winery visit/tour since moving from CA to Texas and it was awesome. Really nice variety of wines, usually just a red drinker but ended up buying a couple of whites. Super friendly staff, Doug the owner was there and gave us our tasting. I will definitely be back!
