Decided to pick up cupcakes for myself and a co-worker. At $ 2.75 — $ 2.90+ tax per cupcake, we were anticipating a moist, sugary piece of heaven. What we received was … not that. The cupcakes were dry, heavy and tasted like cardboard. ‘Fresh’ had passed them by more than a few days. From the Unilocal reviews I’ve read, I can only think one of two things: either the owner has very good friends, or maybe I just went on the wrong day. I don’t know and it’s too expensive to go back and find out. I will give 2 stars because the icing was delicious.

I am not into sweets and deserts but i am absolutely in love with the cupcakes here. Their cupcakes are the best! I have never found anything like these before. This place is a little gem, hidden away in Newport mall. The cupcakes are made with such expertise. The ratio of frosting to cake was perfect. There are daily specials, festive specials, traditional and more style and flavors.

Was craving a fresh cupcake at work and decided to try this place in the mall. Found that the frosting was good but cake was on the drier side. Also had some sticker shock on the price. I’m used to Hoboken pricing but this seemed higher, perhaps to cover mall rent which I’d understand. Not sure I’d try again.

A cupcake is a cupcake is a cupcake right? Not here! A cupcake is something special and made with care and expertise! I for one do not say this about to many places, but a great cupcake for a great price! Tasty, filling and wanting to take more home, this place empowers the essence of a great small business!

I rarely write reviews but the cupcakes here are so good, I feel like I really need to let everyone know! :) Cupcake Salon used to be at Grove and Columbus(right by where I used to live) and I would indulge pretty regularly. I was so sad when they left, and was really happy to find out they moved to the mall. Anyway, the cake is perfect — moist, dense and flavorful. I don’t know how they do it, but even after being in the fridge for a couple hours — the cake still stays super moist. Is it because it’s so fresh? The frosting to cake ratio is perfect — and the buttercream frosting tastes exactly like it should — creamy and sweet(but not sickeningly sweet– like the frosting on grocery store cupcakes). All their flavors are good. My favorites are vanilla with vanilla buttercream and red velvet. Also, they’re consistent. I’ve never had a bad cupcake here. Basically, this place makes the best cupcakes in town — even better than Cocoa Bakery(which is also very very good)) and leap years above and beyond Crumbs

I have to agree with Chantel L. The Cupcake Salon has been around for a few years. It was at the mall, moved to a location on Grove Street, and now it’s back at the mall. Their cupcakes are made exactly the way cupcakes should be. A little dense, moist, and just enough frosting. Everyday, they have red velvet(my personal favorite), cookies and cream, vanilla(yellow cake with vanilla frosting), chocolate with chocolate frosting, and marble swirl. There are daily specialty cupcakes too. The cupcakes are priced just right!!! I usually pick up ½ dozen every week as a treat for my co-workers. And when I want to show my appreciation to friends… I pick up cupcakes!

I was visiting the area and happened upon this little gem. In a city full of cupcakes, this one is pretty great. I wasn’t in the mood to try an assortment of flavors, so I settled on the mocha cupcake. The ratio of frosting to cake was perfect, and this woman really knows the chemistry of cupcakes. The cake was firm yet moist, and pulled away from the paper easily. The frosting was buttery and creamy, just the way buttercream should be. The Cupcake Salon is a bit hidden over near H&M inside the mall. Don’t let the small size or lack of flashy signage fool you. After all, good things come in small packages.
