Great place to order from but as of today, they are out of business and shuttered. I have seen a lot of Indian restaurants close down on newark avenue lately. So sad…

Stopped into Canteen for a mid-week lunch. It was recommended by a woman who worked at a nearby shop, so I knew that I could trust her opinion. This place is completely no frills. There is zero ambiance, but it is clean — that’s really all I care about. I ordered the non-veg platter. It was basically two chicken dishes(chef’s choice), rice, and daal for $ 7.95, plus some naan for an extra $ 1. The amazing food made up for the terrible food presentation which came in a compartmentalized Styrofoam tray(like a take-out tray). Not very environmentally friendly! The curries were spiced perfectly, the portions were generous, and the chicken was tender. The daal was good but not as good as Mom’s. Sorry! The hostess/waitress(I guess she was both because we were the only ones in the restaurant) was very friendly and helpful. I may not dine in again, but I will certainly take them up on their delivery. Solid choice for non-veg Indian food!

Vanakkam. Way too oily… The menu reads healthy food. absolutely no connection to «healthy food». I would not rate it best in terms of food. Just another Indian restaurant. May be little cheaper. Nanri.

still the best place in little india! we’ve been here so many times and still absolutely love it! we will definitely come back again, and again and again! the dals are our favorites, alongside the fried eggplants.

I ordered delivery from them last night through Seamless and it was not a great experience. Instead of delivering within 45 – 60 minutes as their estimated time says, they took an hour and a half. To add to that, the delivery guy barely spoke English and refused to come upstairs. He finally did, and then harassed me for a tip and before I could respond he started stating his job didn’t pay him enough. I ordered naan and achari chicken which was decent but nothing great. There were pieces of pickles in the chicken curry — first time I’ve had achari chicken like this. I wouldn’t order again or go here.

Again, this is my go to Indian restaurant. 1) The menu has so much amazing selections. 2) And they give FREEDESSERT if you check in on Unilocal. 3) If you have Muslim friends who are religious and want Halal meat, they have it as well. 4) The price is VERY affordable. Love this place.

Don’t expect golden players or showers of the best service, BUT the food was pretty darn great! For $ 25 we had a puri dish(was ok), samosa, a veg platter & a chicken platter. Both the platters were excellent. Soooo yummy. Considering we frequent Desi square, we’ll def be bsck.

Dont ever ever order from this place. Pathetic food and not to mention they took 1 hour for delivery. Can you imagine??? The vegetable I ordered was Veg. Jalfrezi and it had more oil then vegetables, seriously … So spicy in spite telling to make it medium. Even the panner kati roll sucked… it was so oily and was barely eatable. Called the owner and he started making excuses… next time it wont happens… will give you a concession when u place next order… I was like hell ya wht makes u think I am even gonna place an order next time… Sorry guys… be careful when u place an order… I would never ever go or place an order next time. Hope somebody from Canteen reads this review and apologises again and make sure they know how bad their service is

This is the best Indian restaurant in the area! The food was amazing and you could taste all the fresh flavors and spice. specially Samosa, Lamb Curry, Paya, and Chicken Tikka Masala. The décor was really nice and set a nice intimate yet not overly formal tone. The staff was friendly and helpful and the food was sent out quickly… loved the chai tea too. This is a diamond in the rough and the prices are just right!

Ordered delivery through Grubhub. Mediocre food. I expected better delivery since they charged $ 5 extra for it. The delivery took 1:15 hours. Never again!

This place is so bad. ITISSOOOOOOBAD! I ordered the Masala Soda, Vegetable Pakora, Vegetable Samosas, and the Navratna Korma. It was all so horrible. The masala soda ha such a strong odor that even after we poured it out it stunk up the kitchen, it made the whole room smell like rotten eggs. The veggie pakora came with a ton of cheese, but it does not state that on the description of the dish. The samosa’s were not fresh. The Navratna Korma was really bland. And the worst part about it is it was all pretty pricey. I would recommend Taj Mahal Romance in Dining if you are looking for a place in Jersey that has great quality Indian food. This place is a must-miss.

In the sea of restaurants lined up next to each other elbowing for space on the busy Newark Ave. in Jersey City, NJ, this place is something that is perennially empty compared to other restaurants. I decided to check it out with my friend for a change in order to try something different for lunch. The place is clean with a decent seating area though some tables and chairs can be really cramped near the windows. Also, mind the ramp when you enter as I almost tripped. For appetizer, we ordered Chicken Banjara Sizzler which consisted of tender, mildly-spicy tandoori chicken pieces(boneless) brought in a sizzling wooden plate garnished on the side with cabbage and carrots along with a Green dipping sauce. Since, I was here for the first time it made me open to try out something I had not seen or ordered at other Indian restaurant. That’s precisely why I ordered Kaju Khoya for entrée to go with buttered Garlic naan(Indian bread) which were tender and soft. This was a curry laden with cashew-nuts and with a buttery taste which was really delicious. This is simply a must-have. The portion sizes were really good and enough for two of us at our Sunday lunch. Although it’s named Canteen, it does not remotely resemble any canteen(cafeterias) in Indian colleges and is definitely a lot better and cleaner. Don’t be fooled by the empty or minimal seating viewed from outside and give this place a serious try. Also, inform in advance if you have a nut allergy(as they garnish some of their items with nuts).

Don’t go for a dine-in experience. What it is is a place to order cheap food that tastes okay for delivery or carryout.

Amazing food! A large selection of breads and delicious/affordable entrees. The only problem I had with the place, outside of a bit slow customer service(but hey, it’s a bistro), was that the bathroom is through the kitchen and I had to ask someone to unlock it for me. The atmosphere wasn’t the best, but I’m so definitely ordering delivery from here every time I want delicious Indian.

Usually most restaurants loose their food quality after couple of months of opening when they see they have gathered enough attention from public. Its not the same with Canteen. The food quality, taste, balance and blend of spices are just perfect. I used to order food from other places earlier, but after having food from this place i stopped ordering from other restaurants. The service is quick, both in restaurant and in delivery, plus the prices are pretty good and reasonable. give it a try people.
