My wife and I ate lunch here. I had the chicken fried steak and she had the cheeseburger. I have to say that mine was one if the best meals I have had in a long time. the chicken steak was crispy and the gravy, on the side, was a good consistency. 5 stars for mine. My wife’s burger was huge. she ate it all. She also gave it 5 stars. We liked it so much we decided to come for breakfast the next morning. I got the breakfast sandwich on raisin toast which was good but small especially for $ 7. My wife faired better with her crescent sandwich. Breakfast was 3 stars. We might try dinner if we stay in town longer.

A great little place for breakfast & lunch. It was previously named the bakery and now called the bayou bakery and café. Good eats when in Jefferson.

A really great breakfast served with a smile. The Home baked bread was fantastic, and the eggs were cooked to perfection. The coffee is hot and bold and the atmosphere here makes you feel like a local. A great place to eat in a cute town(ghosts and all).

Fried chicken strips(not beer battered) are always really good — light & crispy, not over cooked. And they don’t taste like they’ve been frozen prior to cooking. We actually stopped in on our way out of town to pick some up to-go! Fries are also very good. Grabbed a loaf of black pepper, bacon bread based on recent reviews!

We were there a couple of weeks ago and just had a traditional breakfast that was good. The standout was the homemade breads, particularly the super sinful cinamon raison toast!

Keep in mind this is a very casual, rustic restaurant. We stopped here for lunch in the quaint town of Jefferson, TX. MEATLOAF: The meatloaf was excellent! It came with a sweet tomato/ketchup gravy. I prefer that to a brown gravy. MASHEDPOTATOES: Tasted instant to me. I’m surprised if they were, since they specialize in baked potatoes, they definitely have potatoes on hand. #2BAKEDPOTATO: A huge potato with butter, sour cream, raw chopped onion and real chopped bacon. Absolutely delicious. A full meal in itself. CINNAMONRAISINBREAD: This loaf weighs, 2 lbs. 7 oz. I didn’t taste much cinnamon, but had correct amount of raisins and covered with a thick layer of white confectioner’s icing. Unfortunately, this loaf was kind of dry, so couldn’t be eaten without toasting. Once toasted with some butter melted on it, then it was very good. SNICKERDOODLES: Yummy! PINEAPPLEPASTRY: Flaky and overflowing with a delicious pineapple filling. I would definitely return here for their baked potatoes alone!

FORSHAME how our Senior Mothers were treated! AVOIDTHISPLACE! Saturday, November 10, was my friend Judy’s 70th birthday. My sister, another classmate, and I took her to Jefferson, Texas to celebrate, shop, and eat. About 1:30, we decided the lunch crowd had thinned so we went into a resturant called The Bakery on Austin Street. We ordered fairly quickly and began to talk. Several people came in, ate and left and we still did not have food asfter asking the waitress several times what was taking so long. After 45 minutes I asked to see the manager. When she came I inquired as to why it had taken so long to get our food. She said they had been busy! I said that I thought that 45 minutes to wait was excessive. She said, «well, maybe you should go somewhere else to eat». I was taken aback but, since it was 2 P.M., and we were starving, we waited. BIG mistake, the food was not warm, and the chicken fried steak was greasy. When a man came in that was appeared to be the owner, I asked to see him and told him what had transpired. He said and I quote, «we serve good food, and we don’t want people like you in here, so GETOUT»!!! This is the first time in my 69 years that I have ever been thrown out of anything!!! Well, as the say, «there is the first time for everything»!!! We fould out later that he had been the Mayor of Jefferson at one time. WOW!

The chicken fried steak sandwich is huge… and tender and delicious. No gristle, little grease, and wonderful fresh bread and veggies. Highly recommended, but bring your appetite!

When my husband announced that a group he is in would be in the Jefferson area I immediately started looking for somewhere to enjoy my favorite meal, breakfast! The reviews of this place are wonderfully in agreement with each giving 4-stars so it must be awesome, right?! Let me start with some positives first. The service was great. Our waitress was very nice, made plenty of rounds to check our coffee and was very friendly. Their biscuits were very moist and just delicious — I didn’t even feel the need to butter them. My last plus was they used fresh eggs, not the ones many restaurants buy already beaten, for my omelet. I could tell this by the presence of whites in some parts of the omelet. So why do I feel so poorly about this place? I got the mushroom swiss omelet and had them add tomatoes. What I received was not a mushroom swiss omelet — at least not by my requirements. First was the use of processed cheese. It’s like the velveeta version of swiss — and it tastes like the velveeta version of swiss. It’s all pasty with that generic cheese flavor. It was overpowering and I had to scrape it off the top. On top of this, they cooked the mushrooms and tomatoes in some sort of red grease(probably left over from ham or bacon). So basically this red grease started pouring out onto my plate. I expect this from a pepperoni pizza, not an omelet! While the biscuit was great, the other reason I didn’t butter it was because I was brought no butter. They had packets of «butter» in a contain on the tables — and they were covered in crust and grime(as were the packs of jelly on the table). It was kind of gross. I will say my husband enjoyed his pancakes. I had a bite of them and they tasted like pancakes should — which is good. Would I come here again if in Jefferson? Only if my husband insisted. I guess I just expected some sort of homemade quality from a place named«The Bakery» and not fake cheese, fake butter, and overly greasy omelets!

Everyone in my family enjoyed breakfast at this little restaurant. We shared a cherry and cheese flip and thought it was WONDERFUL, so when we left we took 4 cookies with us. Good value, pleasant atmosphere, friendly service. If I ever find myself in East Texas again, I’ll definitely stop by again.

Mom and I eat here every time we are in Jefferson. I especially like their breads and generally buy a loaf very time. This time, we got bacon and black pepper cheddar. This flavor makes really delicous sandwiches. Give it a go. The menu here is not long, but everything I have had has been good. I especially like their chicken fried steak as well as the grilled ham and cheese on the afore mentioned bread. Pastries are also delicious. Try a turnover. I like those very much.

We decided to try the special. It was fried chicken tenders, salad, soup and a cornbread muffin for $ 7.95. The chicken was honestly the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The breading was super crispy and the meat stayed tender and juicy. The gravy on the side was good as well. Really a great dish, cooked perfectly. The sides need some help. The salad was a bit of lettuce, some cheese, mushy tomatoes and bacon. Neither of us thought it was worth the effort. The soup was chicken wild rice and while it had a great flavor was very thick and heavy. A little thining with some milk would have helped a LOT. I’ll go back and HOPEHOPEHOPE that they have the chicken as the special then too, if not I’ll request it cause it really is that good. Service was PERFECT.
