I should have given you 5 stars while you were alive… I still mourn your closing and have can’t help expressing my pain as rage when I think about the abrupt way that you left the neighborhood. Please sell this property to somebody who can reopen it with the same values.

This is a warm and inviting place, especially when the Giant Fireplace is going. Friendly bartenders, especially Brendan, and the very best Vegetarian Shepherds Pie I’ve ever had. The Fries with curry sauce are pretty good too. The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because they don’t provide any service in the diningroom. If you want to eat and drink, you have to go to the bar to place your order. In otherwords, you only get service if you’re sitting at the bar. I do like this place a lot though and do recommend it to anyone looking for a good PUB to eat and drink.

Closed. For good apparently. No notice to staff or community. Horrible way to treat your staff and patrons. That is all!

Jame’s Gate has closed! How can this be? No reason given and owners were not able to be reached for comment by local reporters. Tis a sad day in JP :(

Good beer, mediocre food. If you’re just looking for a drink and a place to hang out, then this’ll be a great bar for you. However, the food is decidedly mediocre pub food. We came, hoping for beer then dinner and ended up getting beer and apps, then leaving for another place for a meal. The beer is wonderful. Large selection with new ones routinely becoming available. The atmosphere is nice, probably wouldn’t be good for large parties. However the bar or seating areas are great for small groups.

Fun, cozy Irish pub in JP. I came here recently for dinner with friends and had a nice time. It was a warm Sunday evening and as we walked in we were met with the sound of an Irish folk band playing in the corner. It made it a little hard to talk, but it created a nice effect nonetheless. Service was prompt and friendly. The clientele also seemed to be friendly and diverse. My quesadilla arrived slightly overcooked(read: a little burnt) but was still tasty. On the whole, a pleasant place to spend an evening.

We really love this place. It’s a true neighborhood bar, where you’re likely to see regulars. It’s not an obnoxious sports bar, but they have a projector screen that they can pull down, and this is where we like to go for the big soccer games. If you’re lucky, you might get to sit next to a roaring fire while a live Irish band is playing. I just wish there were vegan food options(I believe the veggie burger has egg in it).

I came to James Gate once before and remember it being a pretty chill spot. So I figured I’d try it after work tonight. I called ahead to see if their kitchen was still open and no one picked up. I figured they were busy so I just let it ring while I walked up the street. They never picked up, it was cool though I hung up before I entered to see 2 bartenders chatting with the same guy. Must be a nice guy? Maybe they didn’t hear it, maybe the wrong number was listed. Whatever. Had the driest cesar salad I’ve ever had. Pretty embarrassing. And then had the bartender put on an old 90’s skate video for his friends on the big screen where there was a bruins game still going on. I hope a friend of mine convinces me to give this place another shot, because I’ve heard great things about it, and the fireplace is awesome; but left to my own devices I see no reason to anytime soon. :/bummer.

At 6:30 on a cold friday night the fire was going and it was standing room only… who are these people who get off work early enough to already be at a bar? we were seated on the bar side btw anyway…im back on okstupid and agreed to meet up for a drink, and we quickly decided on JG which I had been to before for just a beer and boring conversation with a previous date he looked like his photo so we were off to a good start had some stellas… the chalkboard beer list kind of sucks, hard to read in such a dark place but i valiantly persevered later we had fries which were just ok but after a bit he asked if we wanted some quesadilla and hell yes we did i dont like beans and i dont like chili peppers, this had both and i ate it all, the chicken was fairly unremarkable as far as seasoning but i loved the crunch of the tortilla and everything else had very good flavor. yummy. he went in for the last one and i reminded myself to be polite and not stab him with the butter knife and wrest it away from his cold dead hands and sip my stella while sitting on his still chest, a small, wan, victorious smirk on my face very loud and very crowded but great eats and good beers

BYOL! Bring your own log for the fire, you’re enjoying it after all. Had a really excellent Irish Stout by Harpoon at the gate recently, will be back soon. Never been on the restaurant side, but like they say, if you like your pubs like you like your oatmeal, don’t change anything and you’ll stay nice and regular.

I love James’ Gate. Especially on a non-sports, chilly evening. I love pubs and this is a great one. Cozy and relaxed. The main pub area can fill very quickly. And if there’s some kind of sporting event on tv, forget it. But you can sit at the bar on the other side in the restaurant section. The restaurant section is nice– nothing to write home about, décor-wise. The food is good and I’ve never been disappointed. But it’s definitely more fun to sit on the pub side :)

One of our friends lives around the corner and was really excited to bring us here. It was mid day so not too crazy but fun none the less. It has a great old school vibe so its no wonder they hang here all the time. Can’t wait to come back to visit!

Great place to day drink and watch rugby or soccer. Great place to drink late into the night at the wood paneled bar. Great place to drink by the fireplace during a snowstorm. Great place for a club sandwich, fish and chips, or nachos. And, honestly, the restaurant(non-bar) food is really good, too, if a bit expensive. One of my favorite things about the Gate is that it’s split into a restaurant and bar side; keeps the crowds separate. Tip: there’s a bar on the restaurant side, as well, and it’s quieter than the main bar area. Great secret spot to grab a drink with excellent bar tenders.

UGH James Gate… I want to visit you all the time! I live on the same street, and you’d think I’d go every day. This is not so. I made plans to meet my friend for an evening drink on Friday, and it was packed for the Bruin’s game. We decided to sit in the dining room(there is a pub and a dining room, both with bars). I had a hard week at work, so I ordered a dark and stormy. It was pretty good, but nice and strong(just what I needed). My friend had a glass of wine, and she was excited to see how full it was(worth every penny). So aside from a drink, I needed sweets… I got the flourless chocolate cake. It was a smaller portion than I had hoped, that being said, it was rich, and amazing. Who makes their desserts? It was a dome of chocolate(not too dense, but very rich), with a pool of chocolate and a mountain of whipped cream. My friend ordered it as soon as she saw mine. Copy cat. I guess I can always pop in for dessert whenever I want(roll out of bed… show up at their door). I am ready to visit again!

Had dinner here one summer evening on the patio aka parking lot. Nice relaxed vibe. Hostess didn’t mind our asking to sit at a table with an umbrella or that our third diner never showed up. If I lived in the area, James Gate is probably a place I’d frequent a couple times a month or more. They have a decent collection of beers on tap, although I didn’t have any. We shared the PEI mussels, fried calamari, and vegetable quesadilla. There were a lot of mussels, and only one or two had not opened. The calamari had a nice spice to the batter, though the batter outshone the squid. We weren’t sure how goat cheese would work in the quesadilla(sautéed mushroom, goat cheese, spinach, tomato, roasted bell pepper, caramelized onion, jack cheese), but it was quite nice actually. The male staff we encountered were a slightly awkward mash up of hipster bros. I can’t complain about though. The patio atmosphere was friendly, and the food prices were about where I expected them.

Been here a few times. They have a patio and a nice view of their parking lot. Inside is big and quite pub-like. They have a decent array of beers and food. My experience has been that they’re a good place to go and chill, but not to be impressed with them. The food is fine, but not great. Though I recently had a few carafs of their sangria and enjoyed it — slightly on the sweet side, but not too much. Had some fish and chips, not super fried and crispy — was fine. Also had the shepherd’s pie with beef and lamb. Same — fine, nothing special. A bit too expensive for the food and area. Decent pub.

I can’t believe I have been living in JP for a year now, and I only had dinner here last week. Why??? James’s Gate is my favorite spot in JP now. Thank god because I was looking for a new neighborhood hang out since the mission is no longer nearby. I like how it’s divided into 2 sections. One is the more casual bar/pub scene. It has a decent sized bar for the space, tables and even a fireplace. I can imagine in the winter it must be very cozy. The other side is the restaurant portion, but still casual. There is a bar there too, but more sit down tables for dinner. Good beer selection, and the menu has a wide variety. My inner child had been craving mac n’cheese so I ordered that. A-maze. I made it extra unhealthy by adding bacon. I loved it Our waitress was very nice and quick, but she still backed off enough to give me and my friend some space. I seriously had an awesome time here. So glad it’s just down the street from me. I know where I’ll be hanging out this summer :)
