Since I have lived in Jacksonville, the only skate shops that I’ve seen have been out towards the Beach or on location at Kona. The three co-owners of The Block Skate Supply, James, Mike, and Pete, have now remedied this vacancy west of the St. John’s. I don’t think many Jax folks realize just how popular skateboarding is here, but these three dudes are at the core and will definitely help cultivate the scene further. The Block stocks well known skate equipment from companies like Spitfire, Independent, DC, Huf, Creature, and more. You can walk in with your own skateboard for a repair or walk in empty-handed and walk out with a new board, trucks and wheels. The latter is exactly what my niece did after receiving a gift certificate for Christmas and the rest as an early birthday present. Her brand new skateboard was assembled and ready in no time. There’s quite a bit of apparel from which to choose. These guys are all about local love, too, so you can find Strata(of course!) and Wolf & Cub. I hope to see some Burro merchandise make its way over here. Maybe some Rethreaded too? The shop is a small space right now, but they own the entire building and there’s plenty of room for expansion and growth. I just got home from attending the Grand Opening party and it was packed with skaters, and onlookers, of all ages. They plan to host weekend events every now and again, and they should given their partnership with Instaramp(a portable half pipe that can be setup anywhere).
