Street side Mexican food will always win me over the restaurant alternative any day, and here in Jackson Heights, there are a dime a dozen taco carts constantly fending for the Roosevelt hunger market share. Sabor Mexicano may not be the most original name, but they may just have the most original truck. Trucks are no strangers to these parts of Queens, but for some reason this seems to be the only prominent one for 5 blocks in both directions along Roosevelt. Though the popular and less intimidating food choices are the carts, Sabor Mexicano seems to do just fine with it’s truck. The vehicle is bright and clean and has a long metal counter for folks to dine on. I happen to love the hood the most, where the phrase«Que onda guey!»(«Whats up Man») is prominently painted. The man running the show is Manuel, a native Mexican man from Puebla, who’s self confessed preference of lengua(beef tongue) tacos have me convinced they’re worth trying. Add a couple of my favorite tacos(de carnitas) and the fixins and we’re off to the races. In the end, I’m $ 6.00 more poor but my stomach is infinitely more gracious. These tacos were good. There was lots of juicy flavor and perhaps a semi over abundance of onions and cilantro. They’re no where close to the stellar carts down the street, but are tastier than most Mexican joints in Manhattan(#1). That’s not to say I wouldn’t come back to this truck, but having this option is certainly better than none. I just wish Manuel and co. would say«Que onda guey» to each male patron, or at least just me. ___________ (#1) Even Chinese takeout is more tasty than a lot of Mexican joints in Manhattan.
