I know, I know… everyone loves the Study Hall and I wish I could give them three or even four stars. But I can’t. Yesterday I was naughty and did something people of my generation should never do… a little bar hopping with a friend in Isla Vista. Let me start by saying that over the course of several hours we ran into a whole lot of people who were a lot worse than we were. Somewhere in the middle of our experience, after Gio’s and before Pizza my Heart we stopped in at the Study Hall. I was served a margarita, my friend wasn’t served at all. Bartender’s choice on that call. It didn’t go so well and a couple of minutes later my margarita was being taken from me. With no drinks in front of us we would have left anyway but they made it official and were asked to leave. Why did I give them two stars? Because they gave me a memory that will be with me for a long time…

This place just straight up isn’t any good. Poor service, rude bouncer/bartenders, and I didnt have any fun :/ Hopefully you save your time and money and never go here. Dublins is right next door, and is tons of fun and a more fun and hotter crowd. Pce.

Came here with a group of friends from out of town. Walked from Dublin’s which is right across the street and was sorely disappointed. The bar doesn’t close until midnight but starting at 11 they only serve«mystery shots». There were only a few people at the bar but it still took 10 minutes for the bartender to get to us. IV has plenty of other places to drink. Please, PLEASE don’t go here.

Just like Dublin’s, I have mixed feelings about this place. I don’t frequent it as much because it is small, and therefore gets crowded and rowdy very easily. They make a better IV Lemonade. They also have a fairly impressive selection, considering how small the place is. It’s convenient that they’re connected to the BBQ place. Bartenders are not very chatty, or at least not in my experience. Would give a 2.5, but rounded up for the selection/good IV Lemonade.

I went there with my friend on a Thursday night. It was not busy at all. We went to the bar and tried to order. We stood there in front of the bartender for over 5 minutes. She was talking to her friend the whole time. It was very obvious that we were trying to order a drink but she completely ignored us. Then I saw a man come over, who appears to be over her. I thought he was coming over to tell her to take our order… nope! He came over to join the conversation with her and her friend. Very rude and unprofessional! Will never go there again! Don’t waste your time with their shitty customer service. That night my friend and I went to Dublin. They were much nicer! We got free shots from a promoter and the bartender was very friendly and had amazing costumer service skills.

Came here while we were staying at UCSB for a week-long conference. Since we can just walk from campus, this was on of the first places we saw while walking into Isla Vista from Manzanita Village I ordered a beer, along with another of the guys I was with. The beers seemed to be pricey for being next to a college campus. Our group asked if they had any specials, and the bartender made up a «special» on Margarita’s for the night. Sounded good for most of the ladies in our group. We ordered three of them, and we were not impressed. They were weak on Tequila. Decided to try another bar, and asked for the bill. $ 11 for the«special»? Really? I guess we should have asked how much they were before we ordered them all. There are a few others I would go than here. Pass on the Study Hall.

Used to be our(roomates and i) bar of choice but I had to deal with a shit bouncer that was on a power trip. I’m 22 and been to the bar plenty times. He said my IDDIDNT look like me. He asked me to leave. I showed the card to the bartender and she said that it DID look like me but the bouncer had made up his mind. This is the first time this has ever happened anywhere. I walked home(2 blocks away) to grab other forms of ID. I walked back and showed him multiple cards. He just looked at me and said, «No…no.» It was infuriating. Shame they cant hire decent bouncers. Wont be going back… GRIF is amazing though, always chill.

The people that work here are incredibly rude. I called them to inquire about some information. First they hung up on me four times in a row after picking up. Then they said«I can’t hear you» then hung up. If the bar is too noisy then don’t even pick up the phone. What a dump.

Super divey bar in the middle of IV. Everything comes out of those cheap pre-mixed drink things, kinda gross, regular pricing.

Study hall used to be all right, local bar with decent space and clean bathrooms. The other night we went there for my friends 21st and had a terrible experience. the bartender«bo» was extremely intoxicated. I thought people were supposed to be nice when they’re drunk but not this dude. I tried ordering a shot of patron for my friend whose birthday it was and he called me «dumb» for not choosing a different type of alcohol. Then, he was extremely rude to my friend whose birthday it was, saying she owed him money and owed everyone else drinks that just bought some for her. He wasnt joking either, he was just a dick. Afterwards, he sprayed/spilled alcohol,(by accident or on purpose i dont know) on this random girl, then was laughing about it and being a complete asshole. The girl went up to and told him he was the meanest bartender shed ever had. He ignored her then cranked up the music, turning it down only to say, «HEYITSNOTURBIRTHDAYISIT?!» the girl ended up crying and leaving. I couldn’t believe it. I thought bartenders were supposed to be nice not only to make tips but to bring back business. Ill prolly never go there again, and neither will any of my friends i was with.

For some reason, everytime I set foot into Isla Vista all I want to do is drink a beer, smoke a cigarette, and shit myself. Study Hall is a great place to get all of that started. Plus, Mikey is an awesome bartender.

I’ve been here twice. Both times have been pretty decent. Always fun watching a person take their special birthday shot between someone’s legs. But after Monday night, I don’t know if I’ll experience this place again. On Monday night, a couple of friends and I were at Dublin’s, but we decided to check out Study Hall. However, I wasn’t let in. The person manning the door wasn’t the the usual person I see on weekends. He was more or less running back and forth preoccupied with something else. So it seemed like this wasn’t his normal job, to check IDs. I’m 24, the oldest in my group of friends and I also possess one of CA’s new driver’s license. He took a very long time to ID me and asked me to lift my bangs. If he was trained to do his job right, he’d have read the date of when the picture was taken which was in 2008, not that I look any different now so I still don’t know what the problem was. He didn’t test me at all; didn’t ask for my birthdate, address or even zodiac sign. That’s the usual when people want to make sure that it’s you. Nope, not even that. Which really pissed me off. It was unfortunate that I didn’t carry my atm card because he asked for that. All I needed was my cash and I never ran into a problem with my ID in Isla Vista. Embarrassment flooded me. He turned me away and my friends didn’t want to go in without me, so we went back to Dublin’s and spent our money there instead. Study Hall, you lost business because you didn’t know how to check ID’s. I tip well too, bummer.

Funny or not I didn’t frequent this place until after I graduated and left UCSB. It wasn’t until I went to visit my sister did I get to enjoy a cold brewski and some bar grub. Fun dive joint.

if i’m ever in santa barbara and need another football fix on a sunday morning and a beer, i’m going here. it’s just off the UCSB campus, so it’s probably a popular watering hole for the local kids. there was a couple handful of folks when i walked in to catch the game. my friend was doing a seminiar presentation thing for the students of color conference… but my packers were playing =) the bartender was awesome. he did the funniest brian wilson entrance impression ever, he’s a giants fan lol. fun crowd, there’s food, decent bar. 10 buck minimum if you paying with plastic. have fun.

The bartenders at Study Hall make the place my favorite bar in the world. They are smart, sociable, and make very strong drinks. Everyone should participate in the 50 club spring quarter. One of my favorite college memories.

The study hall in IV is my Mecca. A holy place that I religiously make a trek to. I can remember dozens of great times here. And ive had at least twice that many experiences that I don’t remember but have been told were even more amazing. Anytime is a great time to drink here. I’ve spent many a morning and early afternoon watching sports on their lovely TVs. Great bartenders, great drinks, great company. The hall is the place to be in IV For better or worse, the study hall and their 50 club changed my life, and that is deserving of 5 shining stars.
