One of the nicest steak n shakes in the indianapolis area. DANIEL W was awesome. He remembered our order and didn’t write it down, all while my 5 year old wouldn’t stop talking to him about his hair lol. Our food came in less than 10 mins at 1pm on a Sat afternoon. Everyone was friendly, the food was nice and hot, and again, our server did a great job… he needs a raise!

Steak n’ Shake is an institution. I hope they never go away. They serve a great steak burger — thin and crusty around the edges. Get the double. Shakes are outstanding. Menu has a good variety. Fries are good and so are the onion rings. Plus their restaurants have style — 1960s diner style. And last but not least, they value price. For the health-conscious, Steak n’ Shake shouldn’t be an everyday thing, but after a long day of travel you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better late-night meal anywhere on the planet. Did I mention they’re open 24 hours a day?

Waitress only brought my friend and I one water a piece and didn’t ask if we wanted more. We were not give napkins or silverware. Our shakes took forever to get out(I think the waitress forgot them because mine was all melted when I got it). BUT the food was good and cooked properly. Maybe the waitress was having an off night? Still, super bummed about the service I received tonight.

Kinda overpriced greasy food but it is a lot better if you go inside and sit down and order than go through the drive through. Employees are all very tall but don’t expect much tip. I had a very usual steak n shake experience here and nothing was wrong with my Frisco melt and shake. The service was fairly prompt and the waiter was just average looks. No hair in my food or the shake. You cannot keep the plates or silverware and they are not for sale.

Sooooo slow. Took us a total of an hour and 20 minutes to eat and leave. There were only 2 of us. And we ordered as soon as we were finally seated.

Great service and breakfast/lunch. Marsha was so helpful and patient with the 6 of us — 4 of them kids. We didn’t wait very long when she brought all of our waters, followed shortly by a couple of milkshakes and our meals. Everything arrived as we ordered it and was delicious. And she even checked on us a few times in case we needed anything.

The food is typical Steak ‘n’ Shake(not counting that crapdiner on Pendleton Pike). Sometimes you’ll get cold/stale fries during a lull, but the rest is the usual good fare. The woman at the drive-thru who took my order at 4 am on a Sunday morning was really, really friendly, which was much appreciated, as not many late-night crews around here are.

The shift leader/manager Mary Ann Browning didn’t bother to ask if I needed help at register… Poor service from her

Exactly what you would think you would get from steak and shake. Service was pretty good, a bit slow, but the food was spot on!

Many years ago, I was a big fan of 3am Steak ‘n Shake outings. During the summer of my freshman year of college, my friends and I would all pile into my beater Civic and head over to Steak and Shake in the small wee hours so we could drink cup after cup of coffee, chain-smoke, and talk about whatever navel-gazing nonsense we had extrapolated from the philosophy 101 courses we had taken in the spring. Occasionally someone would order a Frisco Melt or get a milk shake, and I’m certain we were all shitty tippers considering how long we stuck around for on each visit. I don’t frequent Steak ‘n Shake much anymore, but as long as there are 24-hour diners, there will be groups of navel-gazing college students drinking way too much coffee and trying to suss out Ginsberg and Burroughs. I went back recently and everything was just as I left it(except for the nasty smoking habit, which the restaurant and I have finally managed to drop). I can’t say the food is terribly good and the coffee is decent at best, but there’s something comfortable about Steak ‘n Shake. You can always roll up in the small hours, sit down in a booth with your friends, and slip into your own little fluorescent-lit world for a while, no matter what location you pick.

It’s open 24 hours a day, the food is pretty good, and the service is amazing. But why’s the service amazing? Because there’s usually no one in it. My bet is this place shuts down in the not so distant future, which will be too bad. Where else would people in Carmel go for late night fatty food?
