I found out about Soule’s via a radio advertisement for their annual daylily open house. After visiting their Web site to choose from the hundreds of varieties of daylilies I might want to look at for my own gardens, I made the trip to the southside of Indy to take in the show. It was very hot on the day of my visit — and humid — but what a treat! The display gardens are beautiful, if a bit overwhelming for the first-timer. But, what I appreciated most of all was the system in place for buying during the open house. You simply view and make your selections, give the staff your list and pay. Then, you arrange to come back on a specific day about two weeks down the road and presto! your daylilies cuttings are all ready for you to take home. Soule’s also has a nice variety of unusual ferns — of which I am a big fan — and something called Hellebores. These latter gems are shade lovers that remind me of lotus flowers and something I’ve not seen in many gardens. I do highly recommend perusing Soule’s Web site before visiting the establishment. There is sooooo much to choose from and planning ahead helps prevent total sensory overload and wallet strain!
