The food and décor are the top reasons to hit up this spot. The grilled squid appetizer is excellent. The sashimi and nigiri are always perfectly proportioned between rice and fish. They sometimes have toro but not today. But that’s ok. The prices are reasonable and well worth the wait. It’s a small place but it’s always packed. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing at a sushi joint. Just take your time with the miso soup and come with a healthy amount of conversation topics.

I really can’t say enough good things about Sakura. I know that it was the first sushi restaurant in Indy, which should necessarily draw you here, but it is definitely good! They have the sushi standards you would expect, as well as a few of their own. I love the mix Florida roll. This place is always busy! And it’s loud! Don’t come here for an intimate, quiet evening. Sakura is known as being«cheaper,» but don’t expect to save a lot of money. It is definitely great value, and I’ve heard the lunch specials are great.

This place is very authentic with its Japanese cuisine and décor. Their appetizers are ONPOINT here. The agedsahi tofu & the Negemiyaki are the 2 go-to appetizers when I go. Their sushi menu is creative and fun. I can see why this place is packed everytime I go.

Great sushi. I’m not from the area, but judging from the crowd it seems like a local favorite

This place isn’t so bad but not exactly the best either. Overall, it’s just ok. I maybe a little bit biased based on the hype and how people love this place so I had high expectations coming in. Then, I forgot that I’m in Indy. My sushi expectations should be a little more realistic. The place can’t be missed as there’s plenty of parking in the back and side of the building. Come here for lunch since they have pretty good deals.

My friend and I went here on Cinco de Mayo when there was long wait at our restaurant of choice. We were seated pretty quickly, but the service was pretty slow. We ordered a couple of rolls, soup, and seaweed salad. After about 20 – 30 mintues of waiting for our rolls, we ordered some dumplings. Those dumplings came to the table before our rolls. The dumplings were delicious. When the rolls showed up, the were fresh and yummy. But I was already getting full from my salad and dumplings. It was reasonable price and tasted freshed. Note: as other people have stated. The parking lot is little and tight. So show up early for dinner to find a spot. Be prepared to wait so don’t show up super hungry and ready to eat.

Sakura was my first Sushi meal many years ago and I’m still saying that it is one of the best Sushi restaurants in my opinion. Big cities, both coasts, Europe, and middle of no where(had really good sushi in Findley, OH) — Sakura is still my favorite. Do not look to Sakura for cutting edge/trendy food. They serve high quality very tasty food that will leave you very satisfied. I cannot speak to the quality of their other food as I only eat nigiri, sashimi and some rolls at Sushi Restaurants.

Best sushi in Indianapolis hands down. If you’re coming with more than 2 ppl, chances are you will have to wait to get a table… Fear not! It is worth waiting for!

Simply the best sushi in Indianapolis. This place has been here and busy for years probably because they are doing something right. Their sushi and good is always great. Sakura is a small intimate dining room that always has a low rumble of voices. Come early or be prepared to wait but the wait is worth it. The sushi is quality not the yuppie overdone over sauced cutesy named sushi. The good quality sushi you would expect from a sushi restaurant. They cooked kitchen prepared dishes are great too!

Dinner date on a Tuesday night and as you would guessed the place was PACKED. I totally give half of my 5 star review to the service alone. The older woman knew her craft and served us within a timely manner given the volume of the place. Since we were totally new, she helped us make our house favorite selections. My spiced beef dish was full of flavor with the right amount of kick I wanted. The rice was NOT overcooked… this may be a little thing but it makes a big difference to your entrée. The busy atmosphere turned out to be a fun experience my date and I shared and talked about the following week. Thanks for a great work week meal! Will probably be back another time.

What to know: Dinner is always busy! Expect a wait(I’ve never waited terribly long) and a packed parking lot. Get a reward card to earn dollars for use on future visits! What to order: Can’t go wrong with any of the following: the soft shell crab roll, Arizona roll, Texas roll, Rock’n roll, salmon nigiri, unagi(freshwater eel) nigiri Bottom line: Sakura is an unassuming sushi bar with generous rolls and some of the freshest nigiri in town.

Best sushi in town, hands down. The place is small and almost dingy looking from the outside, but don’t let that scare you! The inside is small and intimate, but perfectly clean and nice. We eat here with the family a lot, and I get lunch carry-out at least once a week. I have never encountered a rude person, and my food is always delicious. Their fish is definitely better than Tomo down the street. We always get nigiri, so fresh fish is important to us. Sushi in Indy will never be as good as sushi in some of the bigger cities, but as far as Indy goes, this is as good as it gets!

I visited Sakura on New Year’s Eve, and I did expect dinner to be a bit delayed for this reason alone. However, we were seated immediately, and they didn’t seem too busy. The menu is quite long and a bit overwhelming, but we managed to make our selections quickly. It took approximately 30 minutes to get our two servings of Scallop and Bass Nigiri and another hour of waiting to receive our Texas Roll and Sushi — Sashimi Dinner. During this time, our waitress only stopped by once to check on us, and this was right before our dinner orders arrived. She simply told us the food would be out shortly. She also seemed annoyed that I asked if they offer Takoyaki(they don’t). The sushi was fresh but unspectacular. I won’t be returning.

Great little spot. A table of 6 on a tuesday night and Im glad we had a reservation! Quaint atmosphere and attentive staff. A variety of food was ordered amongst us. The best value for the price: the special dinners. $ 18 included miso soup, salad, california roll, entrée, rice, tempura shrimp and veggies, and ice cream to top it off. There were a couple of nabeyaki noodles ordered as well. Warm broth with udon noodles, veggies, shrimp and chicken made for a nice toasty meal on a cold January night. The best roll that was ordered: rock and roll. Great flavor and a very fililng. Finished that off with a salmon roll and some edemame. Overall: busy restaurant but great taste and price

Holy busy place, Batman! Make a reservation — even on a Tuesday night! That’s my biggest tip. It’s sooooo good. The sushi is fresh and abundant… and why is my sushi eyes always bigger than my belly!!! I barely finished one whole roll but I ordered three plus a salad… everything was incredible. I got a California roll, Philly roll and the ROCK N ROLL(my fave). We ordered and shared two bottles of wine. But they do have saki and many traditional Japanese entrees. It is nothing fancy inside. Seriously — it didn’t look updated in years and you do have to park two lots over if you arrive later in the evening. There is basically NO parking. It’s crowded but for a good reason. I think between affordability and consistency, you’ll be happy. It’s also cozy and a great atmosphere. I went in a group and although it’s small in size, they accommodated our reservation no problem.

What a delicious gem! I got there a little after 5pm, it was a little less than half full. I thought our food was great, service was great, and timing was great. I got the edamame, standard, and the ginger salad– loved their dressing! For sushi I shared a bunch: Bob roll, shrimp tempura, holiday, and a variety of nigiri: tuna, salmon, snow crab, yellow tail, and albacore tuna. My favorite roll was Bobs(out of that bunch). The shrimp tempura was good, it was nice to have a more beginners, standard roll when comparing to other restaurants. The holiday roll had a New york roll inside– and i was not impressed or wowed-my expectation was too high for this roll. It was good, just more of a beginner roll. I loved the salmon nigiri– it is binded with a sauce that packs a punch(wasabi? Horseradish?-yum!) The only thing I was disappointed about were other reviews– particularly the ones about having to wait too long. It is a small place for one, less tables so longer waits during prime rush times. Also it is good, so by 6.30 on a Saturday it was full, and understandably so. Finally, there are like 2 maybe three people doing the sushi vs bigger restaurants with multiple hands on deck– you want your sushi done right, the wait is worth it. If you care more about getting food faster, either go earlier, for lunch, or get it from the grocery. Let’s be a little more realistic Unilocalers! I can’t wait to go back to try more!

Sakura — I’ve loved you for years and that love has only continued to grow through the years as I continue to develop my love and affinity for Japanese food. You are my go to restaurant for Japanese cuisine. I know I can count on you for delicious food and I always leave super happy. You’re a place I love bringing my friends because I know you’ll give them a great experience. Your food speaks for itself and that’s why your parking lot is always so full and the wait can be a tad long — but will that deter me from coming? HELLNO. Because your food is so worth it! Definitely try the soft shell crab roll. I’ve gotten several friends addicted to the roll.

Sakura has been the reigning sushi king in the Indy metro area for a long time… and Sakura will always hold a soft spot in my heart because it is where I learned to actually like sushi. Now when we go, we rarely get rolls or nigiri(too many places with similar or better quality around town, now), but we tend to get their Chirashi bowl. They make a mean chirasi bowl at Sakura. It is always packed with fish, the rice is well seasoned, and it is worth the wait. We also come here for the Spicy Sea Bass appetizer, it is excellent! This is also one of the few places in Indy with uni on the menu, that actually HAS uni! That is reason enough to keep frequenting Sakura! The service can be a bit hit-or-miss, as a warning, and wait times can be long on a weekend. Make sure to come prepared to catch up with your dinner companions…

Don’t miss out! It’s still the best sushi place in Indy. My favorite dish is still the Chilean Seabass Teriyaki. Their maki rolls are unique and satisfying. I won’t fail to mention their miso soup and side salads are great too!
