After Gail accidentally mistook my S.O. for a returning artist she had known since he was a child, we learned that 88 Far East International’s cordial owner has been in business long enough to see a generation of student artists grow up in Idyllwild. Packed with a broad range of interesting merchandise, Gail’s store is a long, two-part log cabin located on the second floor towards the back of «The Fort.» As far as gift shops in Idyllwild go, 88(also known as «Far East Gifts») can’t help but stand out well on its own. No other gift shop in town offers as eclectic an exhibition of East meets West themed goods and apparel as 88 does. This is also likely the only place within dozens of miles where one might be able to find such familiar items as Hello Kitty and friends stationery, Po Sum On oil, Po Chai pills, teapot sets, chopsticks, mood rings, toys, collectible figurines, decorative scrolls, art gifts, as well as walls and racks of fashion and accessories, all in one place! If you happen to feel like taking your time while you browse, you will probably end up spending a good half hour like we did at this condensed fusion emporium, picking up reasonably priced souvenirs, chatting with Gail, marveling over some things old, and occasionally discovering something new. Highly recommended!
