Came here for steak night with my girlfriend and the steak was AMAZING! For only $ 17 you get the most delicious ribeye ever with a side of tasty chimichurri sauce, raspberry vinergerette salad and garlic mashed potatoes. Very filling meal worth every dollar. The owner is super welcoming and my bartender sheena was the perfect addition to a perfect Monday night out. Drinks were so good, I had the strawberry basil marg, the frozen screwdriver and the red on green which were all equally tasty. Not only will I be back but I will be recommending this place to everyone I know !!!

I’ll start with the pros. I do love the ambiance, the food selection, and the cocktails etc. its all lovely. theres great parking spaces and also plenty of street parking. another thing is because of the rainy weather, its been lovely sitting under the bamboo shading on the outdoor patio. I also have a small puppy i bring everywhere with me, because he is still a baby. and because of that, i love that they allow dogs here! it’s also very convenient to walk to if you live in the rice area or even montrose. its pretty central! unfortunately I’ve had more cons than pros. though i really want to love this place, I’m super turned off with the past few times I’ve been. the servers seem to be lost 75% of the time. the first time i sat to get food and drinks with a girl friend i ordered 3 chicken tacos on corn with avocados and no cheese. what did i get? i got one chicken and two beef on flour with cheese and no avocados. they’re terrible at common waiter etiquette. especially the cute asian girl with short hair. super sweet, but bless her heart, i don’t think my order has ever been more fucked up. also, they always forget utensils, napkins, water, which leads to us having to constantly stand and ask for shit at the bar. on a busy night, i get it. theres a ton of people needing to be served at the bar. but for god’s sake its not hard to make eye contact and give me some reassurance that you’ve seen me patiently standing there for 20 minutes or more waiting for a frozen rum and coke that comes out of a slushy machine.(its not that complicated) the bartenders are a bit full of it. their default energy is that of annoyance. last thing: i come here at least 3 times a week with my pup, and even the waitresses come up to my puppy Kiko to pet him because he looks like a little toy. we frequent here a lot because of the convenience. I’ve also seen other folks bring their pups, and overtime I’ve come they have been nothing but super cool with dogs there. But tonight set me off a little. it’s a monday night just like any other night and i sit down with my puppy. the waitress working the patio at the time was one I’ve never seen. I’m thinking she was Latin, she had curly. Brown hair in a pony tail. she was really really really awkward in telling me they don’t allow dogs on monday nights. she kept saying«i don’t think we allow dogs here. i mean you’re puppy is so precious but we just don’t allow dogs. especially not on mondays.» i said«well, we come here at least 3 times to 4 times a week, and we’ve always been welcome to bring my pup» she said«yeah but i don’t know, i don’t know if we allow dogs» just completely dumb in her words. I said«are you new? because I’ve never seen you here and i am ALWAYS here with my dog and its never been a problem» she said«um yeah? I’ve been working here for 3 years.» i said«so, do you or do you not? because I’m here always with him and its never been a problem»(i mean if you’ve been working here for x amount of years, shouldn’t you know?) she then started to argue and make a scene which was so embarrassing in front of everyone on the patio, raising her voice and getting an attitude with me. it was humiliating. needless to say we ended up leaving. i mean i don’t get why the rules would change for one day out of the week, and even if it is a rule that they don’t allow pups on mondays, i would have understood, but the way the situation was handled was completely and utterly embarrassing. its sad because I’ve brought massive groups of friends here multiple times and i even spoke highly about it to all my clients. but after this, i don’t think i can feel the same way about this place. their whole staff needs an attitude adjustment!

Monday’s steak night is a good excuse to visit this location. You get a choice of a 16 oz rib eye or strip steak with mashed potatoes. There were quite a few patrons there but fortunately there is plenty of seating inside and outside on a patio. Under the Volcano is well known for their frozen screwdriver and frozen rum and coke, both very good and pretty strong, so beware. The steaks came out quickly and were tasty. This was my second visit to this location and I really like the laid-back atmosphere here. A great place to sit, enjoy good music and catch up with friends. I will definitely be back.

Went for the steak night special from Unilocal reviews and it didn’t disappoint. The drinks were off the chain. Frozen and refreshing I wish my wallet was fatter because I wouldn’t had stopped at 2 drinks. The steak dinner was great especially the impact it had on my bank account. Chillaxed on the patio and enjoyed the company of locals that seemed to enjoy the casual atmosphere. I will return!

So I come here a lot because their drinks are very fairly priced and well made. The food is ok I guess but I don’t really come here for food, it’s just located in a great place for an after dinner drink with some friends. I love their caipirinhas and strawberry basil margaritas. Only issue is that I’ve recently learned that car break-ins happen fairly often in the area. My friends car was broken into, and she had a lot of her belongings stolen(she’s kind of at fault though for keeping valuables in her car haha). The most alarming part though was that the police officer said that it happens all the time, which doesn’t make me feel all that great about coming here. I’m sure I’ll do it anyways though, I’ll just fight for a spot in their tiny lot and try to avoid parking on the street.

Came here for steak night after hearing about how awesome it was and I’ll have to agree. For $ 17 you get a pretty hefty salad, a ribeye or a strip, mashed potatoes and best of all, chimmichuri sauce! Group and I had no trouble parking at least that I remembered, not really sure since I didn’t drive but I remember it being pretty easy. We did come closer to the end of steak night after a work out so that might be why. We found a table pretty quickly and our waitress came over with menus pretty quickly. Since it was colder when we came, I ordered the nuts & berries drink which had kahlua and frangelico served in hot chocolate or coffee. I forget but it was delicious. For an appetizer we got Queso, like we always do. If you’ve read any of my other reviews you’ll notice that queso is always a must order if it’s on the menu. My friends and I like cheese. Now, for the steak night itself, I will say, this is my FAVORITE steak night. The chimmichuri is good but it could use a little more acidity in my opinion. Maybe a tiny splash of vinegar. The steak was seasoned so well and cooked to perfection. It had such a nice sear on it and a decent amount of fat. Salads are salads. They most likely come from a mix so you can’t really mess that up. The mashed potatoes were good but I feel like they could’ve used something… not necessarily a gravy, but maybe some truffle salt or butter or something to make them more interesting. Despite the fact this is a bar, the service here was really good. Great even! Our waitress was always on the ball with drink refills, getting us whatever condiment we needed or extra napkins what have you.

Went here on Valentine’s Day before getting dinner in the Kirby area. What a perfect start to our night. The drinks were STRONG and fairly cheap. $ 7.50 for a Crown and Coke, with a LOT of Crown. Frozen screwdriver was pretty good too. I ordered a rum and coke before I realized they had a FROZEN version. Something for next time. There was nobody there at 5PM on Valentine’s, which was a bit surprising. But I liked the quiet atmosphere and that we could sit out on their wonderful porch on a nice day. It’s a good place, I’ve never had a bad time here. So drop on in!

Great ambiance… I’m just starting a kitchen remodel and will incorporate some of their décor into my kitchen design :) Went on steak night… steak was cooked perfectly, garlic mashed potatoes were delicious, salad was fresh and tasty. I’ll definitely be coming back to Under the Volcano

One of my favorite bars in Houston. I started going here about 13 years ago, and this bar has been my go-to bar for a lot of my events — from where I went the night I met my future husband to my bdays to my bachelorette party and several times in between. I lost my camera here the last time the Super Bowl was in Houston, and the staff got it back to me. After my first few times going here, the doorman remembered me and I have seen him throughout the years when I have gone back. So, for all these reasons and more, this is one of my favorite places. As far as drinks, you can’t go wrong with the frozen screwdrivers. My favorite drink is the Pina Colada — it is on the rocks, which is rare for a Pina Colada. The Strawberry Basil Rita is an acquired taste but I think it is good — but very strong(you can also get this without the basil, which is pretty tasty). And, as the menu says, the Bloody Mary is a complete meal — it comes with celery, sausage, okra, etc. I’m not a Bloody Mary fan, but this is pretty impressive. The ambience is great. I love the back patio. This will always be my go-to place in Houston and will always be one of my favorite places — because of it’s amazing and unique drinks and because so many of my life events have been here!

A fun, kitschy little Rice Village bar on Bissonnet. Fun décor, fun drinks, great sounding bar snacks(although I’ve never tried any)! I’ve been a couple of times now, and most of the times I’ve gone(on the weekends) it’s really busy. But it’s definitely a fun place to day drink on a Sunday afternoon. The bar was pretty empty except for a couple of tables watching football and some regulars taking shots with the bartender.

Cocktails on par with Anvil, although a much smaller selection. They also have great frozen drinks. Frequently has bands playing and definitely has one of the best steak nights in Houston where for 17 dollars you get a delicious steak, salad and potatoes. Has 2 patios and an indoor area with a jukebox. Definitely a good place to visit if in the Rice Village area

I’ve come here every now and then to hang out or for a pick-me-up steak night after a rough Monday. The parking sucks. They have a gravel lot immediately out front. It could fit approximately 10 – 12 cars. There’s no parking spot lines so depending on how people want to park, it may be less. I’ve easily found parking on the streets behind Under the Volcano. I’ve also seen some people park at the lights/chandelier place across the street after they’ve closed(this was years ago, so not sure if it’s still ok to do that). Steak night is one of my favorites. I don’t like that they took away the flan and the price is still the same, but the steak itself is delicious. The mashed potatoes look like they come out of a box, but there’s an amazingly delicious garlic taste in there that I don’t even care. They offer a ribeye or NY strip option. I’ve only had the ribeye, and it’s always been on point. They serve it with a chimichurri sauce. Like um wow. Steak night also includes a small salad that I personally enjoy. Some mixed greens with a couple cherry tomatoes, red onions and cheese crumbles. I’ve had the strawberry basil margarita and frozen screwdrivers there. Both are good, but I mainly go for steak night. Sometimes, the frozen screwdriver is hard to get through the straw and of course, as always, be careful with brain freezes. Small issue: I don’t like sitting at the wooden table and benches inside. I feel that the way it’s set up, that it’s awkward. Probably a personal issue. Just thought I’d share.

I recent stopped by here for an aft dinner drink. As always, service was less than good. I oped for a Manhattan. Drink was fine, but the glass came out half full. I know this was a less than standard drink, because I have had this drink here multiple times. This is not a bad place, just terribly inconsistent. A/C works really well.

We come here often enough, nice neighborhood bar, nothing fancy. Very chill, dark inside. I like to get one the their cocktails-always tasty with the ceviche. The ceviche is decent size, easy to share as a midday snack. We hang out in Rice most the time so we’ll stop in often enough. Parking lot is small and can fill up quickly on the weekends so just make sure you park in a spot you won’t get towed.

This place has indoor and outdoor seating, bloody mary’s arent bad here but by far need improvement but the garnishes are fun; pickled okra, summer sausage(im not sure what that is exactly, an olive and pickled green pepper(I always what you call these guys)… but not enough horseradish or flavor to the drink otherwise…

I came to check this place out for their steak night. For $ 17 you get a choice of 16 oz of rib eye or strip with a side salad and some mashed potatoes. Not too shabby at all. I had the rib eye and my friend had the strip. We both enjoyed our steak and have no complaints. We also tried a couple of drinks off their cocktail menu, and they were not too shabby at all. They definitely didn’t skimp on the alcohol because my friend(who can drink a lot) thought his drink was a little strong. Even though it was steak night, the place wasn’t as crowded as I expected it to be for a steak night. Unlike some other places where they literally run out of steak, this place was pretty empty. Or maybe it just seemed like it due to the size? Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She kept coming back to check with us on drinks and always filling up my water. Awesome! Long review short, I will definitely be back!
