We went to the Real Sammie’s last night and we had a blast. The band started at 9:30pm and really played their hearts out on 70’s funk cover tunes. Sammie is a star, whether there is one person or a hundred there to hear him perform. It did smell a bit funny, I agree with the previous reviewer on that score. But the music was such a blast, the dancing was so retro-larious, and Sammie is such a classic that I couldn’t help but enjoy it. I“ve changed a lot since 1975 but Sammie is the Real thing, baby.

Last Saturday night, after my disappointment with Legends Jazz Café(see my review on this joint), my wife and I did not give up on our search for live entertainment. I remembered that Sammie had moved downtown on Franklin, so decided to give him a shout. We refused to pay the outrageous fees for parking downtown on the weekend and happened to catch a free spot next to a meter 2 blocks away. Glad we did. Walked in the door at 10:30 p.m. only to find no attendant at the entrance and nobody inside except for a couple of band members and a bartender. One other couple wandered in ahead of us. The place wreaked of bad sewage. Not sure if it was in the carpet or not. We were told by a guy that must have been the doorman that the band was running late but would be there shortly and would get going no later than 11:30 and that the customary cover charge would apply after that time. The place was a virtual tomb it was so empty. Don’t care about the cover, but 11:30 p.m. was too long to wait to see a band. Won’t be visiting that spot any more either. I can plug in my Ipod at home at get all of the music I need for free without wasting the gas and getting the runaround. Houston in the 4th largest city in the nation, but the lack of quality adult-style live entertainment short of a night club is astounding!
