I can’t give this little restaurant enough stars. I was a wonderful find. Definately a place you would pass on by on the street, but you’d be missing the best bar b q you have ever tasted and the people are great as well. Thanks fellow Unilocalers for directing us to this diamond in the rough. We live 40 minutes away and will be back soon for more. Make sure to check the hours before you go. I think they are closed Monday and Tuesday. The earlier the better before they sell out :)

We found this little spot by accident as we were looking for another one resturant. We decided to stop in and give it try since you can’t go wrong with bbq. Let me tell yall, this bbq was so good! I ordered the ribs with 2 sides(mac and cheese and Cajun rice) for $ 10.95. The ribs had a nice smokey flavor that was just to die for! I loved how crispy the top was but soon as I bit into it, the meat was moist and so full of flavor! I didn’t need the sauce but I’m from the land of more sauce the better! The sauce didn’t disappoint either. My only complaint was that it didn’t have enough garlic in there for me but that’s a personal preference. The spicy sauce probably did but since I was sharing my food with a toddler, I didn’t get the spicy. The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy, just how we like ours in the South. And the Cajun rice? Perfection. On a side note, the raspberry tea was the perfect ending to this adventure. Overall, we loved it! The staff felt like we were talking to our family members, very welcoming and charming. We can’t wait to come back!

This is a nice surprise. I had the turkey which was moist and the brisket which was cooked just right. The sides were over the top good… beans and rice.

It’s been too long, Texas. Oh how I miss you! The great thing about work travel is getting to experience a whole new environment, which means new restaurants! The first thing I craved when I got here other than Blue Bell was good BBQ and this place definitely took care of that crave. The 2 meat platter for lunch(after the check-in special of $ 1 off) ended up costing about 12 bucks. I ordered the ribs and brisket with mac and cheese and Cajun rice. I forget that Houston has a far more Cajun/Creole influence than Dallas and I was dying to try their rice, which ended up being so freaking awesome. I could have easily just ordered a bowlful of that with hot sauce and been happy. The brisket was just slightly shy of being a straight 5 stars. Extremely moist, awesome flavor and just the perfect amount of fat and I was even lucky enough to get an end piece which was just heaven. The ribs were outstanding too and still tasted great the next day for breakfast along with the mac and cheese. This place was an easy 5 because of not only the food, but the service and friendliness of the staff. From the time I entered, I was greeted and treated very well from the 2 employees out front. By the time I ordered, I was reminded me of how awesome Texas is and how proud I am to be from this state.

First of all the service was excellent and the folks working there could not have been any kinder or attentive. However, I had the brisket and it was fatty and soaked grease on the bottom and top of my bun — I could not eat the bun and only ate about 50% of the meat because every other bite I received a mouth full of fat. I did finish my meal with the pound cake and it was EXCELLENT! But since I went for the bbq I can sadly only give them 2 stars

This place is charming and quaint. The people treat you like you have been a regular customer for decades, and when you try some their delicious meats you just may become one. I tried their brisket and sausage baked potato, strawberry cake, smoked boudin, potato salad and sausage sandwich. Everything was phenomenal except the potato salad… That was just meh. I will definitely return many times and also spread the word of mouth. This may be my new favorite Q joint.

We were greeted upon entering by Steve Garner, who, after quick introductions, shuffled off to the kitchen and brought out a small boat of today’s house-made jalapeño sausage for us sample. Spicy, moist, loaded with beef and pork, and great texture. Memorable bites for all of us. We quickly settled on the«Taste of the South» Sampler so we could get some of everything, plus a couple of links of smoked boudin. Again, the sausage on the Sampler left a lasting impression on all of us today, with big flavors and its coarse, slightly loose beef and pork fill. Brisket was on point, with an East Texas-style spice in the rub and a thin, crispy bark. Everyone was pleased. It’s not Central Texas-style; you won’t find a thick, heavily black-peppered bark, so if this is your yardstick, you might be disappointed. Don’t be – remember that Texas BBQ has many different branches on its family tree, and on the East Texas-style branch, Southern Q is a standout.

These are the kinds of places I love to visit. Small, out of the way, and totally competent in the kitchen. You start out walking up a cement ramp into a converted mobile home(or shed). Its’ very cozy inside, but I was taking out so ordered at the counter. I’m always conflicted about whether 1-meat or two is sufficient, but glad I went with the 1-meat chicken meal. It was more than enough, being ½ chicken and two sides. I skipped the condiments and side fixins(bread, pickles and onions). The chicken was very good, moist with an unexpected sweetness on and under the skin. The breast meat was flavorful and I had no qualms about eating the delightfully crispy/salty/sweet/spicy skin(something I am not always prone to do with undercooked skin). There was a good smokiness throughout and not a lot of greasiness. The thigh and wing pieces were equally, masterfully cooked – dry skin, moist meat and there’s that tang again. My only complaint(and this is a growing complaint with a lot of restaurants) is the saltiness. I wouldn’t say it was overly-salty, but my mouth had a tang to it after wolfing down the chicken and sides. Speaking of sides. I had planned to eat just greens(green beans and collards), but they only had green beans FORCING me to eat Mac and Cheese. The green beans had a few strands of smoked meat throughout, and were not a bland, mushy mix, but were relatively firm and a little spicy. The potliquor was probably better than the greens and they really should sell that liquid as a broth on the side. It was just that good. The macaroni and cheese was also very good; nice use of real cheese and not that processed stuff. As with other reviews you’ve read of mine, I don’t care how good the food is, if the mood is inhospitable and the service poor. They scored high marks on both accounts and really made me feel at home, even with my short wait before bouncing to eat at home. If you are ever in the FM1960/Kuykendahl area, do yourself a huge favor and check out this place. Your tastebuds will certainly appreciate it.

My brother told me about this restaurant, we came today and we’re not disappointed! The big poppa potato is so good, best baked potato you’ll ever have. The sign above the door says«come as a stranger, leave as a friend» that couldn’t be more accurate. The wait staff was very polite and professional and made the experience that much better. We will be back the next time we visit Houston!

Southern Q BBQ has a certain Texas atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The staff is friendly and helpful, even delivering your food to you. I had sausage and ribs, and they were good that I didn’t even need BBQ sauce. The ribs were so tender that they practically melted in my mouth. I would definitely recommend this place. 5 Stars for sure JD

On a recent trip to Houston I could not pass up being in Texas and not hit up some real down home BBQ. Well after much research I found Southern Q’s and sure glad I did but the hardest part was deciding on what to eat, but after much contemplation I went with the 2 meat combo with ribs and brisket complete with cajun rice and potato salad. First bite into the ribs the meat just falls off the bone and the smoke on the meat is so delicious and the sauce should be served in small shot glasses because it’s good enough to just drink by itself. Then on to the main event the brisket… you can get it chopped or sliced but I decided on the sliced version. BTW there is no skimp in on the portions here either the brisket was sliced nice and think and OMG you didn’t even need the knife provided it was so tender and moist. It literally melted it your mouth it was so tender hands down one of the best briskets I have ever had. Being from California you can’t find brisket like this that melts like this or so tender. I know. It’s Texas and they probably have it at the gas station like this but this was a real treat. The sides for me are usually just a fuller and don’t really care but the potato salad was equal to the rest of the meal and the same with the cajun rice extremely delicious as well. This again was such a treat and wish and only sad I don’t have a Southern Q close to my home… If I am ever back in the area this will be a definite stop again.

Stumbled across this place last week. Its a small neighborhood restaurant located right off the street. The entrance was very clean and cozy. I ordered a stuffed baked potato. It was really delicious but was a whopping $ 10. I guess that’s to be expected at most BBQ places nowadays. Nonetheless, it was yummy and I would order again. The staff were very nice and pleasant. They even have free WiFi, dining tables and TVs. Great experience.

My better half and I LOVEBBQ especially trying out the new hotspots so after seeing that Southern Q was voted«Honorable Mentions» in a write up, we decided to give it a try. A bit lackluster from start to finish if you ask me — the woman taking our order was very matter of fact and didn’t crack a smile. I got the two meat plate — moist brisket and pork ribs — with a side of mac & cheese and dirty rice. The rice was overly salted, and I could have made better mac & cheese at home. Also, there was nothing special about the BBQ sauce.

Well I ran my truck into a ditch by this restaurant. It was awful. But while I was waiting, the staff came out and made sure I was okay, and told me they were going to make my food over again for me so that it would not go cold(I had ordered take out). They offered me a place to sit inside while I waited, truly showing grace and kindness to me. The food is incredible. Best darn brisket I’ve ever had. Juicy, tender, with a wonderful bark– it couldn’t get any better. Incredible Mac and Cajun rice too. Go here. Eat here. You won’t be sorry.

Just devoured the two meat plate with moist brisket and smoked turkey. Came with a side of potato salad and green beans, white bread, sauces, pickle and onion. Overall everything was very good and compares to any BBQ place listed on Texas 50 best BBQ places. I’ll be a regular here. Critiques: Potato salad too much yellow mustard. I prefer savory instead. Green beans too salty but did have pieces of meat in the juice. Nothing bad to say about the meats. No beer

It was just ok. We got the brisket, ribs, susage, and a few sides. My favorite was the brisket. It was a little dry but has great flavor. The ribs and susage did not impress me. The mac and cheese was typical. The cajun rice was way too soggy!

Excellent service– they were very kind, clean restaurant, location is close, and the food was AMAZING. Often times I like the sides more than the meat or vice versa, but here everything was incredibly good. I had the one meat plate, with turkey, mac and cheese, and cajun(dirty) rice. Everything was amazing, and I even liked their sauce. Will definitely be coming back!

I was having a hard time deciding what to do for dinner. I came across Southern Q on Unilocal, read the raving reviews, and headed in that direction. I picked up a two meet plate with brisket, sausage, Mac n cheese, and green beans. And since I figured I had committed to calorie overload I also added an order of banana pudding. The ladies who took my order were so nice and helpful! I feel like that such service is quickly disappearing. I can tell you that none of the food has disappointed! The brisket is so tender, you can cut it with a fork. The sausage has so much flavor and is cooked perfectly. The green beans are delicious! A nice touch of spice with some pork mixed in. The mac n cheese is obviously freshly made and not out of a box. BANANAPUDDINGOMG! So freaking good! Do not skip dessert yall! But my goodness! I am so glad I ventured to the Q!

This BBQ joint is on Kuykendall about ½ mile north of FM1960. It is only open for lunch and dinner Wed-Sun and has its own private parking lot. I ordered a ½ chicken and added beans and potato salad as sides. I had to order these items separately because their chicken plate only offers a ¼ and I wanted a half. Their drink options are only canned drinks which I got one. When the food arrived I noted that both sides were a little small. The potato salad is mustard based and a little tangy(3.5). The beans were good too(3.5). The chicken was a little dry in spots and I gave it a 2. If I came back I would order some other meat. The sauce was tangy and ok(3). It wasn’t a bad meal but I have had better. Remember this review is only for the chicken. I also think their sides should be larger. See my picture. Total cost of the meal with tax was a little over $ 12.

Best BBQ joint up north. They went from food truck to restaurant in a couple of years. Glad they finally settle down after bouncing around, specially since they’re so close to home. Their BBQ is great, wood smoked in a BBQ not like all these other fake places. Bark is always crispy but enough to not kill the taste of the beef. Best Smoked chicken I have ever tasted, don’t know how they do it but it is always moist. You get a better deal with the plates than buying it by the pound. Great service, family owned makes this place even better
