Unpretentious little corner restaurant in the Third Ward. Not the most amazing food you’ve ever tasted, but it is decently comforting. Creole Enchiladas did still have bagged chips and nacho cheese as some people complained about on the Taqueria LuLu page, but it was still tasty. They do seem to be progressing; the interior doesn’t look overly crowded and there’s a new air conditioner in the corner. Oh, and sweet potato pie!

Taking over from the previous owner’s less-than-stellar Taqueria Lu Lu, this little Almeda café adds an interesting cajun twist to already decent tex-mex fare. Creole shrimp enchiladas and jumbalaya were the winners, while breakfast tacos here were just ok. Most dishes come with a very interesting and equally delicious cajun style salsa, good enough to almost redeem the breakfast tacos. Inside is small and cluttered, with no discernible air conditioning, but somehow this does not detract from the happy neighborhood atmosphere. The place has an almost carribean vibe, perfect for jambalaya and blackened catfish tacos. What would bring me back is the feeling that this is a real restaurant, run by real people who just know how to cook well. If that’s what you’re looking for, then stop by.

Even though taqueria is in the name, don’t expect your traditional taco joint. Instead, expect a simple and delicious marriage of creole and mexican influenced dishes. Full flavor, large portions, low prices, friendly staff, and it feels a bit healthier than your standard taco, too. Only downside is I’ve already tried(and enjoyed) everything on the menu, I want to try what ever inventive item they come up with next!
