Having in the past few months been spoiled by the Dallas food truck scene, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much from Houston. Boy was I wrong. The food truck scene is thriving, and while Papou Jerry’s is pretty good, it wasn’t quite up to what I’ve had elsewhere.(Specifically: here — ) Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere? It’s not much, but then again, it’s a late night food truck right? Papou Jerry’s is quick and the server friendly, and I couldn’t have asked for much more than that. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? With my all-time favorite Greek food truck’s gyros coming in at $ 7.50( ), I was thrilled to find that my gyro at PJ’s was only $ 6.00. Have a look: Not quite as big as the competition, but a fair price for sure. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Good? Sure, considering it’s late night food. Great? No. The meat was pretty good but was loaded with quite a bit of grease, and the pita wasn’t quite a light and fluffy as I would have liked. Very good sauce though. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Papou Jerry’s is fine to satisfy a gyro craving late at night, but there are better trucks in the area for sure. No Star Granted.

I tried the gyro with fries here once and I will never go back. Over priced, miniscule amount of fries, bad quality gyro meat, and the owner needs to clean his fingernails. Enough said.

Mediocre, at best. Greek people serve the best Greek food… these were not Greek people. Fries were good but fries aren’t why you eat at a gyro place. Gyro was ehhh. We were sad.

Update 3÷17÷2013: Ordered a Pete’s Special with parmesan sweet potato fries… I am now in love. Had to up my rating after this one. Fast, friendly service even for a busy night. Let me start by saying that I love food trucks AND I love gyros. However, Papou Jerry’s does not give me the best of both worlds. The gyro meat is obviously from a frozen pack. There is no spindle on the truck to even have the hope of making a decent gyro. That being said, there are some saving qualities about this food truck: 1. It’s located on the same lot as Alabama Ice House. It makes a good accompaniment to a cold brew after work. 2. The Parmesan fries are actually quite good. I would give these a whirl if you are trying this food truck out. update: Try Parm on the sweet potato fries! 3. There are other items besides gyros to order here. Nothing I have tried it spectacular, but nothing was awful either. Pete’s Special is a standout item. There are also some new items on the menu that I have not tried. So, if you are near Alabama Ice House and don’t feel like tacos, give this truck a try!

When I go to a food truck, my expectation is to find someone someone who knows there food and are passionate about it. Not here. They had some one working who couldn’t understand my order correctly and got it wrong. There is nothing special about the overpriced gyro($ 6) which seems like it was pre-sliced or possibly frozen. Is there even a skewer back there? The meat portion also was adequate. I’d skip the truck and go somewhere else.

I had a recent discussion with a fellow Unilocaler about how my food truck ratings are always skewed upwards. I love the heck out of food trucks. The main reason because I eat it at night after a few drinks. I even told her that almost every food truck gets a 4 or 5 and if you’re a 3 that’s really bad. So take that for what you may… This food truck is always parked at the west alabama ice house. Which is a plus to start off with because no chasing it around town. I opted to try the gyro and fries, I figure I couldn’t go wrong. And I didn’t. It was solid, but the price was way too steep. The only had a few pieces of meat in the gyro and it barely filled me up. For greek, I guess I rather just stick to a place like Niko Niko’s or even a buffet.

the chicken gyro was horrible, fat and chewy … while portions are on small side the fries was probably only thing that tasted good. I would rather eat at the other taco truck on other side of street, much better value and flavors!

I was craving a gyro and it was Monday and my favorite gyro place is closed on Mondays. Since we live so close to West Alabama Ice House the hubby and I decided we would walk over and give Papou Jerry’s a try. When we walked up to the truck we could bearly tell it was open. Then a guy popped out of no where to take our order. After looking at the pretty boring menu I decided on a chicken gyro the hubby got a lamb gyro. Then we were told he had to get change from the Ice House so we could pay when we got our food. We went and got our beers and drank about half of it before our food was ready. It felt like forever! Both gyros were meh. Nothing exciting, it was just chicken or lamb in a pita… with some lettuce and tomatos. I do not crave their gyros like I do several other places. I also wish they had other Greek items like stuffed grape leaves. But they don’t. So I will go to other Greek locations that do and hope it isn’t a Monday.

I don’t recommend this rookie food truck. First and foremost it’s expensive!!! Second, the food was bad. Very bad. I complained but the guy had a beer and cigarette in his hand and didn’t make an effort to help. Rude and unprofessional. Go somewhere else… my 2 cents.

Good gyro and fries along with good portion. One thing I don’t like is that it takes more than twenty minutes to get your order even though it’s not too busy. The truck takes credit card nowadays FYI.

Fantastic! Gyro and fries will cost you $ 10, plus tip. They’ll taste great, and you’ll be at West Alabama Ice House, where they had Miller Lite for $ 2.50 a bottle, a nice, big, dog-friendly beer garden, and a good crowd. Limitation: I did eat here while drinking and I hadn’t eaten in seven or eight hours before that. Old shoes probably taste good when you’re drunk, let alone starving. But I still bet it tasted great.

I cheated on my beloved W Alabama Ice House taco truck. Papou Jerry’s fancy mustache on the side of the truck titillated me enough to give it a shot. It tastes a lot like Niko Niko’s, which is okay, I guess. I’m just overwhelmed with meh.

This truck is great, The gyros are better than at the greek fest, the other items will win you over very quick. I live in clear lake and eat there at least once a week! Come grab a gyro and fries, a cold beer at the WAIH and people watch. Big Mike

This food trucks’ owner knows what he’s doing. The boyfriend and I both got a gyro and fries. The fries were the perfect crispiness– best fries out of a food truck, no doubt! The gyro was up to par with niko niko’s which in my opinion has the best gyros. It’s usually placed in West Alabama Ice House’s parking lot, so you can wash it down with a nice beer. All in all, great food truck!

I can’t believe more people haven’t Unilocaled this truck. I should cc Phoenicia Grocery downtown on this review but I don’t think it would help. My wife and I headed downtown yesterday to check out some of the Olympic trial runners and the fairly new location of Phoenicia on Austin Street downtown. The race finished up pretty near the grocery. We checked out the grocery after and I have to admit we were very impressed with the selection and the prices they offer. We wee in there a good hour before Mama decided to sit down and try the beef wrap Gyro type sandwich. They have several spits that they roast different meats on. She went with the beef. WTHoly disappointment! I should have read through more Unilocal reviews first because I noticed after the fact that others had our same experience. The bread of course was amazing and the toppings were excellent as well, but the meat was terrible. Dry, flavorless because it was the consistency of beef jerky and both my wife and I had to ‘ahem’ remove an unknown hard chunk of gristle or something from our bites. Bottom line is this wrap was horrible. Later the same day we ended up at West Alabama Ice House for some cold beers and sunshine on the back patio. After a few beers and some time watching a couple of amazing dogs entertain us, I talked Mama in to splitting a Gyro from the Papou Jerry’s food truck that parks there on Saturdays. I kid you not we both were laughing at the difference between this and the p.o.s. wrap we had earlier. This Gyro was perfect. The pita was warm. the meat was the pressed lamb and beef loaf style, and the tomatoes and onion were fresh and crisp. The thing that blew us away was the Tsaziki(sp?) sauce. It was thick and had chunks of feta in it I think. You could hold the little cup the extra sauce came in upside down for a full minute and I bet and it would not fall out. Amazing! Nice call West Alabama. I hope y’all and them are both making some $$ on this because I want that truck to be there when we go back.

Wow the gyros here are good. I happened to be driving down West Alabama one night and saw the truck. I passed the truck up to get to my original destination but the truck remained in my mind. I guess a couple of things caught my eye: — Jerry is my nickname also. — I had been craving a gyro for awhile & — the graphic design was quite nice for a food truck(i’m a graphic designer… i notice these things). So on my way home i decided to grab only a gyro to go even though i wasn’t even hungry. I’m definitely glad i did, but i wish i had room for those fries. I saw someone else get them and they looked delicious. When i arrived home i forced myself to scarf this baby down since it smelled so good and i was by now semi-full. What i enjoyed was the tziki sauce. It was very onion-y which i do like and fortunately for me home was my last stop of the night. The white sauce definitely beats out any other gyro white sauces i’ve had previously. The sauce made my gyro. Too bad i dont live closer to the area or else i’d be going here weekly.

OHSNAP! Real estate rearrangement on Monopoly board and taco truck got ousted from Boardwalk. This little blue meal on wheels is parked on the corner of W Alabama Ice House every night. Just open since Thursday, it’s churning out Grreeekkkk gems. I wasn’t incredibly hungry so I went for the beef gyro. You can opt for the chicken. They are both $ 6. Want fries? Additional $ 2. The meat itself was a bit on the salty side for me but all in all… solid 3 stars — A Ok. I also think I prefer lamb. The tzati… I give up. The sauce that comes with, was good but not what I’ve come to expect both here in town or abroad. Anyway, I would like to try their fries and maybe their greek salad. Cheeseburger on the menu too? Anyway, I’m sorry I cheated on you taco truck. I promise next time I’ll act right and be incredibly hungry. I’ll be multi-cultural and order both Greek and Mexican food as to not offend anyone.
