The Nabeyaki Udon I had here tasted just like the Udon in Tokyo! The shrimp crunch roll had loads of flavor.

I’m definitely a fan of this place. Great food, not the cheapest, but it’s quality, authentic Japanese food. Chef Hiro is great. Very friendly and creative with his sushi creations. Try the Texas Surf and Turf sushi… mmmmm yummy.

Hiro. I assume the Japanese-looking man behind the deftly making sushi is Hiro. He is so mysterious. Bald head, finely trimmed mustache, distinct circular glasses that somehow stay above his eyes on his forehead. I could watch him all dinner, and I did. He wasn’t for dinner. Instead, we had the Agedashi Tofu, Texas Surf & Turf Roll, and Skydiver Roll. I eat sushi once every 2 – 3 months, so I’ll just keep this review simple and say that(1) I’ve had better Agedashi Tofu(like at Aka Sushi), but it wasn’t bad by any means;(2) I think the Surf & Turf is overrated because you can’t taste all the different flavors;(3) Skydiver Roll was really great, especially with the eel and soft shell crab. Also, whenever Hiro is done constructing a masterpiece from behind the counter, he quietly but firmly says, «Aye!» to alert the sever that his craft is ready to be enjoyed. What a guy.

We came here with a group of friends(15+) and have heard it has the best sushi in town so trusting our friends we decided to try them out. I have learned that they do not handle large groups well and are easily confused by separate tabs. I was on restricted balanced food plan so I could not have any grains or wheat. Plus I have fish allergies. You are probably wondering why I came to a place where I could barely eat any of the food on the menu but the majority of votes wanted to come here so I came and just sucked it up. The chefs were too lazy to make arrangements or substitutions when I asked if they could just omit the rice for my sushi roll orders but they were so adamant about adding them regardless so I just had a plate of cooked eel and I had some of the pork meat from the pork dumplings and left the skin. I was not able to really enjoy the savory taste of the sushi at this place but observing my friends, it seemed to be really delicious. Other than the food being mediocre, the service was mediocre too. So we have learned to not go in large groups, to go with a friend or two so they don’t get confused wit the separate tabs and they are not willing, at least the chef that was working last night, he was not willing to make any substitutions or changes. But then again, I could be just spoiled by my father who has made me custom sushi rolls for a good 25 years.

If you love outstanding food and into the artistry of Japanese culinaria, this is the place for Southeast Texas! In a non-pretentious setting, it is the sushi, sashimi and other delicacies that make Hiro Sushi one of the best places in Houston. Hiro, the Itamae, makes each place setting himself and when the chef/owner is in charge, it will be «ichiban». No matter what you order, it is artistically created and masterfully presented to represent the pride Hiro has in his artistry. If you have the chance, sit at the sushi bar and watch the master at work. It as if it is the author of a great novel, personally telling you the story. If you are adventurous, ask what is recommended and you may end up with something you may not have tried before, but is a culinary orgasm. I personally enjoy his«omakase» or chef’s choice and have never been disappointed. A great Japanese culinary experience!

This place is awesome! Great service and great food. We got the Texas Surf n’ Turf roll, the Skydiver roll, the sashimi combination, and chopped scallop rolls. They were all super delicious and they weren’t heavy like most sushi rolls. We were a bit worried about the freshness of the sashimi since we were the only customers there(when we first arrived anyway), but they were all really good(especially the tuna… to die for!)

Don’t know how this place makes it. Have been a few times with a friend who lives near by, and the only reason for ever returning was simply location. The fish often tastes fishy. The service is mediocre. And considering it’s in BFE, the pricing isn’t great. There’s a place down the road that is much much better.

We just had lunch here, recommended by a highly knowledgeable sushi friend. Bottom line: very, very good! My associate and I both had the deluxe sushi special: six pieces of nigiri(tuna, salmon, yellow-tail, escolor, eel, shrimp), and a California roll. The soup was tofu/beef, very fresh and light, the salad the requisite lettuce and ginger dressing, the dressing not too heavy. Both the soup and salad were quite small, but appropriate for lunch, I guess. I’m not a rice expert but the rice, oftent the single most important component of nigiri, was clean and bright tasting, maybe not quite sticky enough but delicious. The fish itself was excellent — large, thick pieces, beautifully cut, perfectly fresh. The rice in the nigiri often broke under chopsticks pressure, not sure if that’s a rice problem or a chef problem. Worth picking up the pieces though, the flavor was just right. The California roll(I know, I know) was also good, served inside-out, the outside just a sprinkling of sesame seeds. A nice change-up on the old classic. The service was excellent — virtually invisible, yet we got whatever we wanted right when we wanted it. Our waitress spoke little English but more than enough to take our order. I tried to order my personal favorite, masago with quail egg yolk, but she didn’t understand and the chef translated that they don’t carry quail eggs — a minor disappointment. The restaurant itself is in the ubiquitous strip mall on the incredibly commercial and crowded Highway 6 near SH529, in one of the islands in the middle of the parking lot where they squeeze in 5 or 6 more stores. The one dining roomo is very small, seating maybe 16 plus another six at the sushi bar. Even at noon on a beautiful Wednesday it was almost empty. However, the people that were there, and those that came and went while we ate were all Asians — always a good sign for a sushi place. I will be adding my review to my favorite food sites so that more people can try this place. There aren’t a lot of choices on the far west side, so this is a welcome addition to the list of good sushi restaurants in Houston. It certainly deserves to have a full dining room!

Authentic cuisine from a Japanese-born sushi chef. Recommended. Check out the pix I uploaded. A photo is worth a thousand words… Please carry Uni in your menu more often. Uni is the best ingredient for sushi. Wish you all the best, Hiro-san, and thanks for the great cuisine.

Came here on a early weekday afternoon hoping for a delicious sushi lunch with a couple of old friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was pretty deserted for lunch hour, which was surprising to me. I figure I just came at a good time, I hope? Judging by the decent reviews I was expecting pretty good food, that is for the suburbs. I ordered one of their nigiri lunch specials that came with miso soup and salad, both of which were below average but nothing entirely horrible. The wait time for the sushi was a little longer than I had liked, considering that we were the only people in the restaurant. But it looked like a mom n’ pop kind of place, so it didn’t bother us too much, just means more time for awkward small talk D: So I’m no sushi expert, but when my dish finally arrived, it definitely did not look like it’d be tasty. It looked a little off color and just drab and sad. Hoping I was wrong, I went ahead to eat it anyways. The fish was not fresh at all. SADFACE. Probably the saddest sushi experience I’ve had in a long time. Every piece of nigiri left me unsatisfied, and everyone in my party felt the exact same. And we were craving some good nigiri real bad the entire morning and then for the rest of the day. I’d like to assume that it was just a bad time of day for them and that normally they have decent sushi, probably for the dinner crowd. But to me, that’s still unacceptable. I won’t be going back. (A couple days later I made the trip to Hokkaido in Bellaire and had some deliiiicious hamachi: P Craving fulfilled and lesson learned!)

My husband just went and got some take-out from here. We were looking forward to it, but we were both extremely disappointed. My chicken teriyaki didn’t have much flavor and the chicken was chopped sloppily and had a lot of fat on it. The rice was good and the vegetables were ok. However, since it was a chicken teriyaki dish it was ruined by the not-so-great chicken. I was very surprised at the very small portion of food given that it was a $ 15.00 dish. It did come with a side salad and soup as well, but the dish didn’t seem worth $ 15.00 at all. The ginger dressing tasted a little odd as well. My husband had the shrimp tempura and was disappointed to find only two pieces of shrimp. We had some yakitori which had a nice flavor, but my piece had so much fat on it I couldn’t finish it. We were quite disappointed after reading such great reviews. Perhaps the sushi is much better than the other entrees which we did not try. I am not sure if we will try this place again or not. What we had was not very good and def. not worth the money.

Simply the best sushi in Houston. We had a Volcano roll, a Sashimi plate(Tuna, Salmon, Esoclar and Tai) and something called a Rock ‘n roll(shrimp tempura, avocado and spicy mayo). The fish is absolutely the freshest in Houston, and the presentation is flawless. I don’t often give 5 stars in a Unilocal review, but this place certainly merits it. You will not be disappointed.

I really like Hikari across the street but that place sometimes is crazy busy so we decided to try this place out. I liked it and the waitress was someone we knew that used to work at hikari :) Lunch specials are reasonably priced and come with soup and salad. I think something here made my stomach hurt badly. Maybe the freshness of one of the sushi rolls I had. I don’t think I will be back unless someone I know wants to go.

Oh my goodness. Amazing sushi! There are 2 things I would recommend to anyone eating here: 1. Surf and turf roll — Thinly sliced steak on top of sushi?! Yum. It’s probably the best roll I’ve ever had in my short, sushi-eating life 2. Classic chirashi — I can’t even explain in words how good this is. It’s a cute little box filled with fresh fish, vegetables, and seasoned rice. Everything is delicious. The presentation is beautiful too! The fish just melts in your mouth. We even licked the box clean. /shame Waitstaff is nice too :)

This is the best sushi place in West Houston hands down. One word to describe the fish here is FRESH. Items are cut to order by a Japanese sushi chef and it doesnt get more authentic than that. The sushi and sashimi here are some of the freshest Ive tasted in Houston. There lacks any fishy type of smells and the texture is on point with what you should expect from a high grade sushi product. True sushi purists will appreciate the quality here. If you must get a roll, the surf and turf roll is a must. The thinly sliced beef is seared to perfection and is a delight. The nabeyaki udon here is also pretty good. The broth is served piping hot and flavorful. The udon noodle itself is perfectly cooked al dente. The décor is a pretty generic sushi bar style. It is a pretty small place but it has never been overly crowded in the dining area or the bar area. There no frills here and everyone is pretty friendly. I would highly recommend the commute for this Japanese gem for all Houstonians.

I do not live in or near Katy. I cringe when I have to leave the Loop. However, I will drop everything and fill up my gas tank to eat at Hiro Sushi. It is SOWORTHIT. I am actually just going to quote Amanda H.‘s review(below) because she introduced me to Hiro Sushi and it pretty much sums up exactly what I would say: «This is hands down my favorite restaurant on the west side and undoubtedly my favorite Sushi restaurant in the US. Hiro and his Wife initiated me into the world of GOOD sushi with a menu of the freshest fish and a variety of excellent nigiri, Maki and temaki. The atmosphere is welcoming and as authentic as it gets, but remember that the place is small and Hiro is both the name on the door and the one behind the counter. For the price, it is simply the best you can get in the city. For the best bang for your buck, I recommend the Sushi Deluxe with either spicy tuna or California rolls. The meal comes with 9 pieces of chef selected nigiri and a roll, plus small miso soup and salad. Bring your appetite! I always follow with a spider hand roll, which is bar-none the best I’ve had anywhere(and I’ve tried many places). Remember to come with enough time to eat and enjoy, as it is a small staff. Lunch can be slow if there is a lot of volume in the restaurant, but it’s still worth it. Also, Hiro keeps Japanese hours, so take call ahead to get the times.»

This sushi restaurant is a nice family owned place that provides j authentic cuisine. Details like fresh wasabi(most places use a powdered version) and ginger, choice large pieces of fish, and sake that is actually good. The options may be limited as compared to other commercial joints, but they do what they do well. I strongly suggest the spicy tuna/salmon roll, escolar & salmon sashimi, and any of their ramens. Be sure to ask Hiroshima(owner) about what fish are freshest. I’ve seen a couple less stellar reviews, which I think is sad. Reading them, let’s me know how commercialized and unauthentic places have programmed others to think is good sushi. Most sushi joints owned in Houston are owned by Chinese people. Not that it’s a bad thing, but there is a world of difference between Chinese and Japanese cuisine. This place is authentic Osaka cuisine as provided by a professional chef that was trained in the art in the native Japan. Doesn’t get more real than that. I’ve spent many weekends at the place, watching it full of Japanese people eating. That alone should speak volumes about the place.

This is a very small Sushi place on HWY6. We went on a Tuesday night and it was empty. I thought the service was ok, but the food was definitely lacking. We ordered a few rolls and miso soup. The rolls were jus ok, nothing to set them apart. I have to say that the quality in my opinon was below average. I am sorry, but I will not be going to this place again.

I dropped in here Saturday evening after reading the reviews on here. It was either Hiro or Hikari. The establishment was cozy and quaint. The waitress was so helpful and very enthusiastic. She kindly asked what our preference was in sushi and my friend mentioned that he was considering the Chirashi Bowl. Immediately her eyes lit up with excitement as she happily raved about how wonderful and amazing this choice would be. Immediately my friend and I were sold and we had to try this selection. She told us that the owners are the ones who prepare the dishes and they are from Japan. When our entrees were served it was prepared with delicacy and fresh. The portion was great and each item on there was very different than any Chirashi Bowl I’ve ever ordered in my life. I’m usually at Hokkaido off Bellaire when I order this choice. I was very impressed and being with a friend who has visited Japan a couple of times, he said this was the most comparable and close to how they serve it in Japan. Our experience was great because of the enthusiasm of the waitress and the salad and miso soup was spot on as well. The dressing with its citrus and tangy flavor was favored by my friend that he requested a jar to take home with him. I would come back again if I was on my way from the Cypress Premium Outlet Mall and had a sushi craving again. If not that, the waitress whom I didn’t get the name for was just so cute and enthusiastic, I’d probably come back to just befriend her! ^_^ Definitely a hidden gem in the Northwest side. If you want some truly authentic Japanese cuisine, I would definitely recommend this location.

I was craving sushi and pulled in here with a friend. My friend does NOT like sushi or any form of fish. But. I was driving. So suffer :) The place was nice, very modern and clean. The wait staff was wonder full and very friendly. We were sat at a table and the waitress brought our drinks and a free appetizer. Some sort of marinated fish that my friend quickly dubbed cat food. And it did have that appearance. Though it was a little fishy, it was fishy in a good way. Then our first problem appeared. My friend could find almost nothing on the menu to eat. I’d thought they might have bento boxes but only for lunch it seems. However we finally ordered a spicy tuna roll and beef rice bowl for me and terriyaki beef for him. My food was quite good but not exceptional. His was the same. Good but nothing special. But what brought the place down wad the Gyoza. The gyoza, pan fried dumpling with pork mixture filling, was truly horrible. It was beautiful to behold. Crisped lightly, and beautifully presented but with a horribly bitter aftertaste I’ve still got coating the inside of my mouth. I kept looking at how they looked and trying just one more Bite thinking they couldn’t be THAT bad. But they were. All together. Despite the decent sushi and wonderful wait staff. I don’t think I’ll be back. The gyoza was that bad.
