I was in the mood for latin food that wasn’t Mexican and this place satisfied the craving! Guatemalan food is more similar to carribean food than Mexican food so its completely different but very good.

Fantastic restaurant on hillcroft! This place is a little known gem in Houston and I highly recommend Guatemala Restaurant. I tried the Carne Asada(delicious, thin, marinated steak) and it was so juicy and delicious! Definitely a place I will frequent more often!

Holy cow, I didn’t know Guatemalan food was so dang good. So my mom and I have a shopping/pedicure session at least every other week. We often pass this restaurant on Saturdays, and finally decided to try it. And boy am I glad we did. This place is seriously one of the best restaurants in Houston. It is packed on the weekends, and when you try the food, you’ll know why. I’ve had the fried shrimp plate which was fantastic, and the beef fajita plate which was excellent as well. They also have amazing fruit smoothies, and great tasty soups. I haven’t had anything here I didn’t love. If you haven’t been here, go now!

I spent a about 6 weeks in Guatemala, and I’ve been trying to find a restaurant in Houston that would bring me back to that time in my life. This is the place! We ordered a bean tostada, pepian(chicken pepian with veggies and rice), caldo De gallina(hen soup with salad and rice) and a side of plantains. For drinks we had the atol De platano and the atol De elote(hot plantain and corn drink) The pepian was delicious! The gravy was so tasty I wish I had more! The caldo De gallina was OK. The chicken was a little under seasoned… definitely not as flavorful as the pepian for my taste, but other than that it was delicious. The hot drinks were perfect for this cold day. But the star of the dinner was the tostada. Omgoodness. That is what brought me back. To having Guatemalan street food. You have to get one! Overall I would be back to try more of the menu.

This place has delicious Guatemalan food. I love to get what they call garnachas as a appetizer. Their rellenitos are also the best I’ve had so far. During winter time my husband and I love to get the atol de elote. It’s amazing. Love this place!

I took my two children adopted from Guatemala for Sunday brunch today. They are 8 and 9 and it was our first trip. We really enjoyed ourselves. The food is a very homestyle Guatemalan cooking, very similar to what I ate there, with maybe a bit more salt then I experienced in Guatemala(American influence perhaps?). Guatemalan food is very different then Mexican type foods. It really is mellow. The foods I ate in Guatemala was under salted to my american taste, but still loved it. This place did what I saw many authentic places do, put red pepper on the tables(or sometimes hot sauce). I didn’t like the plantains, they were much more sweet and oily then what I enjoyed in Guatemala. But the chicken and rice, soup, breakfast(beans, sour cream, beef, eggs), tamales were great. They had some«kid foods»(corn dog, chicken nuggets, etc) on the kids menu, which suited my less adventurous son. My daughter tried and enjoyed everything, especially the soup. Inside was clean and comfortable with modest Guatemalan decoration. The staff was very polite and attentive. I let them know my Spanish isn’t good and they helped me a lot. We felt welcome. I was likely the only non-Guatemalan person in the full restaurant, but didn’t get stared at too much. It looked as if many people came in for a family meal after church and was pretty full at around noon on Sunday. I really felt like I was back in Guatemala today.

Great food at a great price and fantastic service. The staff here clearly takes pride in their food. It’s kind of a dodgy location and there’s bars on the windows, but don’t let that scare you off. It’s fine on the inside.

Is Ok. Guatamala cuisine not know internationally and really not much to it probably little better than most other central american countries. They have potato tamales but not recommended when it comes to tamales stay with the Mexicans. they have a smoothie looking forgot the name is good but nothing special i can make it home. is good place to check out a few entrées i feel like i was in Guatamala and most patrons are native Guatamala. Spanish is required and have experience eating Latin american foods

Loved it. Just go. The atmosphere is great and food was home cooking. I had a chile relleno, and a pacha(potato tamale) with atol de elote. Brought back some tasty memories of my Abuelas cooking. My husband(Non Guatemalan) licked his plate clean with his pepian with chicken. He was in Guatemalan heaven: D

This place is for all of the Chapines out there in Houston — as it is the only Guatemalan restaurant in town! The food was of good portions and the prices are affordable. While my Tico, or Guatemalan, friend thought the food was a bit bland for the lack of heat, he still likes the place — and I can see why. The entrees were good(pepian chicken is popular here), but I think going all out on tapas may be the best thing to do here as the entrees is half-starch(mostly rice and maybe potatoes). Be sure not to miss the tasty Guatemalan enchiladas that are Mexican tostadas topped with beef, onions, boiled eggs, and something pickled.

One of the best breakfasts we’ve ever experienced at a restaurant. Between the perfectly cooked egg, creamy and savory beans, and the soft, pillowy tamales, there wasn’t much time for conversation. The only time anyone said a word was to describe how delicious their dish was. Definitely coming back to this spectacular hole-in-the-wall discovery.

Small, dinky hole in the wall that serves authentic(my half Guatemalan vouches for it) Guatemalan cuisine. I had a group of 6 of my peeps show up here to try out some fare from heart the Mayan empire. I tried a drink called Atol elotes which was quite tasty. Its a corn drink that’s served warm that had hints of pumpkin spice in it. I had the chicken Pepian which is chicken that was slathered with this velveteen gravy that was lusciousand succulent. It kind of reminded me of chicken curry without the spices. That was what I was surprised about Guatemalan food was the lack of heat. I also tried some fried plantains which was ok but kinda bland. The tamales were kinda bland too. All of the dishes were under $ 10 so it’s really cost effective. Overall, I think this place has good value so I’ll be back to try some more of their delicaicies.
