When in the mood for good non-authentic Chinese food in the tunnels, I bypass Wok & Roll and hike over to General Joe’s Choptix. Why would an Asian person like me love this kind of Chinese food? Sometimes, you just have to admit that it hits the right spot. I hike over from my building at One City Centre once a week it seems now. The General Joe’s chicken is the best seller as the volume goes down fast but they do replenish. Everything is set out in front of you and you can choose between rice or noodles with one side item, two side items, or three side items. I usually get lo mein noodles and two side items, which usually is the General Joe’s chicken and a vegetable side. They also have steamed rice and fried rice if you do not want lo mein noodles. I also add a big fried egg roll to my meal, which is $ 1.39 an egg roll. My meal ends up being $ 9.40, which is a splurge for me. Being prego, it’s okay I tell myself. :) So then I hike back to my desk and enjoy my food, which is still hot. So there you have it, a prego lady walking all this way for some Americanized Chinese food when Wok & Roll is close by. It’s good food I tell ya! :) Oh, they do not take American Express here, so just bring cash or another card.

General Joe’s in the tunnels moved a couple spots down to a larger location. And they even serve burgers, fries, hot dogs, and sandwiches. Go figure, lol. Yes I ordered a hamburger at a fast food chinese restaurant and actually, it really wasn’t so bad. And the fries. really good. The chinese food. for the tunnel’s isn’t so bad. The sesame chicken and the bourbon chicken are my favorites. The staff is always nice and the service is fast. There’s a flat screen TV and more seating. Breakfast available too. For lunch time tunnel food, it will do.

General Joe’s is my favorite slightly offensive fast-food-Chinese-chain restaurant in Houston. Granted, it is the only one that I am familiar with, so that favorite doesn’t go very far. The sign has a caricature of an Asian man with squinted eyes in a Chinese military uniform. The next time I’m in the tunnels, I’ll snap a photo and upload it to the review. Let me give you the short and sweet of it: either order something that requires them to make it fresh – though this will increase your wait time – or get something that you know will have a high turnover. Therefore, you’ll want to try either the egg rolls or the general joe’s chicken(Tso or Joe). As far as the made to order items go, I would stick with the fried dumplings. They pale in comparison to the dumpling joints over by the Pavilions, but for this part of the tunnels, they aren’t a bad value. I usually get these. For the tunnels, GJC is a reasonable option, but by no means in the upper echelon. No way I ever go to this place above ground. I’d rather have Pei Wei. Also, beware of the following: limited seating(just take it back to your desk), lots of grease, samples shoved in your face, and a minimum credit card charge.
