I can’t believe this placed closed! It wasn’t awesome but it was my favorite late night place to go to after the bar. Sad face…

59 Diner is always a must when my boyfriend and I are on that side of town. The food always comes out just right. The staff are super friendly, they always make you feel like you’re at home. The décor gives it a funky vibe as well which I love. This place definitely satisfies you’re late night cravings — their milkshakes are to die for!

It’s just a diner with lots of memoriblia. Tacky décor but I love their breakfast food and the best is their corned beef hash

Not awful for a turn-&-burn café. On the few occasions we’ve been there’s usually something the kitchen doesn’t have or doesn’t have fresh. Being open around the clock is part of their saving grace but does no justice for their spotty service and sub-par quality in taste. It’s cool that they do frito-pies, cheese fries, and chicken & waffles, to flavored pancakes, deli sandwiches and dessert. It’s definitely worth the cost, all the items are reasonably priced. For lunch, a late night meal or that drunk-food(which is a combo of junk food while being drunk), 59 Diner may please, but don’t expect much more.

So about 5 months ago I relocated to Houston and needed a late night(10:30/11:00pm) place grab a bite and hop on free wifi. I figure it’s been long enough since the incident that I can now share. Well I decided to stop into 59 diner since it looked cute from the outside and reminded me of the silver diner chain we have back in northern VA. Any who. I walk in and receive a friendly greeting from the hostess who seats me and tells me the nightly special. I already knew what I wanted so ordered an omelette and a milkshake. I open my laptop and begin working. The food comes out surprisingly fast and looks delicious. About 5 mins into my meal a male diner seated in the back of the restaurant begins to argue with one of the chefs or line cooks over a counter. They clearly know one another somehow. The male diner is accusing the line cook that he’s a «tweaker» and calls him other obscene names. Other 59 employees begin to get involved because the male diner is obviously intoxicated or under some type of chemical influence. Next. Thing. I. Know… A punch is thrown and 3 men begin to brawl right in the middle of the diner. It was totally epic!!! Other diners began to leave but I stayed for the show. I did decide to leave once the male diner went to his car, because guns are not foreign in Texas. On his way out he was screaming at the top of his lungs that he’s going to call the cops and he wanted everyone in the restaurant to be his witness(no one agreed). Later when I walked out of the restaurant(by myself) the male diner was still sitting in his truck. he put his window down and said the cops were on their way. I was feeling badass so I told him he better hide the beers in his back seat before they arrive. Needless to say. Go to 59. You’re bound to get dinner(breakfast/lunch/snack) and a show!

I order the appetizer sampler… They told me they were out of cheese sticks. So I ordered a Grilled chicken salad and waited close to 15 minutes for a salad. The server was good but the kitchen look nasty from my view point.

We ate there about 2 months ago on a Sunday. The service was horrendous(not really the waiters fault). The food was gross. They were out of toast, pancakes and knives! This is a diner. HUH??? We thought it was a joke. It took an hour to get food and it was wrong. It wasn’t just our table, but the whole restaurant. So the server told us there is a new owner. When he bought it the whole place went to s**t. He literally said this. When we were checking out, the cashier at the front mentioned the new owner again and said she had never seen something managed so bad and was looking for another job. Send a message to the new owner. Don’t patronize this cash cow.

Come for the atmosphere and for late night milkshakes/cravings — NOT the food. The servers are nice but always very scattered. Honestly the only reason I ever come here is because it’s close by and one of the few sit down restaurants open until the late hours of the night. The milkshakes are great, but other than that I would not recommend any other item on the menu, and I’ve had the burger, egg platter, and French toast. In summary, 59 is perfect for late night outings, which is why I keep coming back, but never for an actual meal. It’s a fun place that’s always hopping — gotta love that old timey diner feel — but order a milkshake and nothing else.

When you first walk into this place, you might have some high hopes because of how«groovy» the interior may look. Heck, it’s even open 24 hours, so you’re probably proud that you’ve found your new late-night grub spot. Unfortunately, I’m sorry to say that you’ll be disappointed… very disappointed. First thing’s first, the service here is horrendous. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve generally been here late at night and in somewhat large groups, but man oh man… There was one time when a handful of us wanted to order milkshakes. After ordering a few, our waiter scolded us for«ordering so many milkshakes that we’d cause them to run out of ice cream», and told us that we couldn’t order any more. First off, as a restaurant, don’t you want to encourage your customers to order as much as they want? By ordering things off your menu, are we not providing you with the business you want? I don’t understand. There was another time when the food we ordered took an hour and half to arrive… and when it did finally come? Multiple people’s orders were wrong, and what was ultimately supposed to be a quick stop for food at 2am ended up being a 2.5 hour disaster. As for the food itself, the food is flavorless, gross, and almost frozen-food-esque. Other than the milkshakes, there is really nothing else worth getting here. If you’re ever looking for a place to get food, do not make the mistake of coming here. Find yourself starving at 4am? You’d be far better off going to the Whataburger across the street.

I’ve only dined at 59 after midnight so the senses aren’t too sharp and the cravings are a far short from refined at that point. But if you’re dying for that classic greasy diner food and you’re struck with the late night munchies, then 59 is your destination! 86% of the charm of 59 is that it’s literally the only place open at the wee hours of the morning(or late hours of the night? whatever. It’s dark outside and you get the picture). The menu lists many expected items like French toast, eggs, pancakes, etc., but also non-breakfast items if you so please. The regular food fare is possible, however, the real winners here are the milkshakes. My personal favorite is the Oreo flavored milkshakes. The semi-frozen beverage comes toppling in a tall, oldies styled cup with a metal container on the side for aaaalll the extra goodness. The milkshake is thick and creamy, filled with Oreo bits and minuscule ice shards to add to the textural experience. Yum!

Nice atmosphere but the food just wasn’t that good. I had high hopes, and I really wanted my cheese steak to be good, but it was not. My wife had breakfast for dinner and was not feeling it either. This is a shame because it has all the makings of a really great diner.

59 diner is one of the few late night options close to Rice campus. In general, the servers are pretty nice, and finding space to park isn’t a big problem. The inside itself tries to go for a retro diner feel, but is also a bit tacky. In terms of food, for the price, it is only alright. The fish and chips are not as crispy as they should be, but they have good flavor. Milk shakes are definitely my favorite thing here, with strawberry Oreo being my personal favorite. Like everything on the menu, your milk shake portion size is huge, so you definitely can split with someone. Another plus is that there is a ton of stuff on the menu, so you’ll find something you can eat. As a late night place, 59 diner is alright. It is neither the worst nor the best in the Rice area, but the milk shakes are worth coming for. Service 3.5÷5 Ambience 3⁄5 Food 3⁄5

Oh we go way back! I just adore this diner. The location is kinda funky and I like that. You gotta know Houston to navigate how to enter the parking lot and that to me is a plus. The food is consistent. One of the best things on the menu is the cinnamon bun. There is no way that I could attack it by myself. If you can then hats off to you for that. I like to go there on the weekend and get their eggs benedict. I took my husband there over the weekend and that is exactly what I ordered. It was OK, not stellar. The sauce was rather congealed looking and it was not the warmest of dishes. I was hungry and he had his meal. I am not a fan of one person eating and the other sitting there waiting(see my Kim Son Unilocal). So I ate it. I have never had this happen before. The place was was far from packed. Perhaps whoever was in the kitchen was new. Also, the garnish looked like it had sat out on the Galveston beach on the previous day. Rather limp and lifeless. Another thing I love from there is a malt. However, I was having breakfast and that would be just silly. PLUS there is that Blue Bell thing and I just CANNOT and WILLNOT have anything without my BLUEBELL! 5 Halley puppies laying down.

59 Diner serves up the kind of breakfast you expect from a diner: eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast(and for not a lot of money). We were here on a Monday mid-morning so it wasn’t terribly busy. Service was quick and friendly. There were tables of older folks, which is also the best kind of diner. Just a note: if you ask for a «small side of salsa,» which is free at any other restaurant we’ve been to, you pay $ 0.99 for a bowl of ranchero sauce here. It’s good, but not what I expected(and I did not get a heads up about the added cost)!

First off, my server was fabulous! She was everything you could want, quick and attentive. She gets 5 big stars! The food, new management and new menu? That’s where the 1 star comes in. I was excited to see chicken and waffles on the new menu, but oh so sad when they came to the table. The photo in the menu looked so appealing, I got the opposite. Total bait and switch. Four of the saddest chicken tenders I’ve ever seen. Cheap, stringy and just gross. The waffle was tough, and I mean use a knife tough! It was completely ridiculous. You should NEVER need a knife to cut a waffle! It’s seems like with this new management is trying to make it more upscale. No one wants that! It’s a diner! So very sad…

As a student in the vicinity, 59 Diner was introduced to me as a late-night option. Over time, I’ve learned that there are other options that merit my appetite’s attention, even at 3am. However as a late-night option, 59 Diner offers a change-of-pace… you won’t get rushed or pushed or have to wait outside forever in line for a foodtruck. The service is shoddy, but their milkshakes are on-point. Usually, they serve you a milkshake and the leftovers in another cup(the effect is you get double the portion for the price of one). The last time I went, the waiter didn’t bring the extra milkshake… which was disappointing since I was expecting the extra sweet treat. I figured either 1) they changed the protocol, 2) the waiter was new or 3) the waiter forgot. After, speaking to a friend who also visited 59 Diner recently and said they did bring him the leftover milkshake, I think option 3 is true. Since the sole purpose of my visit was for milkshakes, I was sorely disappointed with my experience that night. Key point: Go with low expectations. You can rely on 59 Diner for being open and for having good milkshakes… but I wouldn’t expect anything more.

50’s themed diner superimposed on an IHOP type restaurant with the same sort of over-filled menu and subpar food offerings. I came on a Sunday when all the quality places were too busy. $ 3 for a cup of… coffee. Just coffee. Fine, I was willing to accept it, so I could have some brunch. Alas, I didn’t even eat my meal. My scrambled eggs had some green stuff in them. When I notified the waitress, she told me it was probably blueberry. She took my plate back to the kitchen. Came back some time later and confirmed that it was blueberry. Green blueberry! I cancelled my order and said I’d pay for my coffee. She didn’t offer to take that off. So I paid for my overpriced subpar coffee and split. I won’t be back.

I had the veggie burger with sweet potato fries. My hubby had a cheeseburger with onion rings. Very good, inexpensive diner food. The fact that they serve breakfast all day is also a plus. Service is always friendly. They are a little short handed on staff these days, but staff is so sweet, the extra wait won’t annoy you :-)

In a town where you have Denny’s, IHOPs, House of Pies, and a plethora of other late night eats, then why 59 Diner? Well, honestly, it’s just another option. But it’s a pretty good option, methinks. First of all, unlike House of Pies, there’s never a bunch load of people waiting to be seated. Unlike IHOPS and Denny’s, the service that I’ve received at this 59 Diner has been pretty good. And no, that’s not the alcohol talking. I read what some of the other people complained about; and yes, I can related. When you come here, you might not have somebody greeting you at the door and taking you to your table. But guess what? Go inside, there’s a lot of empty tables. Pick one and sit yourself down. That’s what I did. And the waitress came out to me pretty quickly after that Now let’s talk about the service. The few times I’ve been here, I haven’t had any bad service, really. I’ve had a chatty, friendly waitress. I’ve had the«oh, you’re drunk? But it’s cool» kind of waiter. I’ve had different people waiting on me and not one bad experience yet. So I don’t know why some of the other reviewers were getting pretty crappy service here. Sorry to hear, y’all. As for food, well you can’t really expect anything 5-stars from an establishment that is 59 Diner. However, the food is decent. The chicken fried steak and the chicken fried chicken are solid. The pancakes aren’t too shabby. The breakfast food is pretty legit also. All in all, until I get a pretty crappy service here at 59 Diner, it will always be a late-night option for me. Would I come here willingly because I was hungry? Probably not. I have other options during the day. Better options.
