On a rare evening walk through Waikiki I decided to take a break from the cosmopolitan carnival of Kalakaua Ave. and took a stroll through the serene graciousness of the Moana. Also, my great-​great-​grandfather Charles Lucas of Honolulu Planing Mill was the hotel’s original builder, and I wanted to see if the historical display featuring his story was still in the lobby. It is not.
But while I was enjoying both the sanity of the Moana’s lanai and the insanity of Waikiki on a weekend evening I found a gem. There’s a Nohea Gallery on the Ewa side of the main entry.
I’ve been to other of their stores over the years. They feature local artists and craftspersons, my locavore tendencies are not limited to food, so they have been a staple for gifts. Not all the art is by local artists (hence the 4 stars not 5) but it’s all really beautiful stuff. After walking the gauntlet of hyper-​marketed formula «art» all over Waikiki, Nohea is a sanctuary. Truthfully, it’s as much a gift shop as gallery, but I think that’s a good thing. There are gorgeous and clever things, all that have some real connection to Hawai’i. I loved the aloha print Sunshade/​umbrellas. I try not to want t-​h-​i-​n-​g-​s. But there were several pieces of shell jewelry, handmade here by local artists that I couldn’t help wanting. They also have some of my favorite local greeting cards.
It is an exquisite little respite from the masses, and the treasures are many.

I love the Nohea Gallery at the Moana because they have high quality hand made gifts that reflect Hawaii. There are wonderful woodworker designs, paintings, fabulous hand painted silk scarves as well as water colors and glass. Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly. It is the perfect gallery to find traditional and contemporary designs of Hawaii. The best reflection of Hawaii is not found in drugstores but is found in the Nohea. May they always be at the Moana so that when I need special occasion gifts I know where to find them. Thanks Nohea Gallery for your great art work!
