The one star rating has nothing to do with the products(jeans, tops, belts, etc.) at Lucky, all of which are absolutely top quality. With two annual sales of up to 50% off, there’s always an opportunity each year to get yourself some great jeans for a steal. The abysmal rating has to do with the store manager and her total lack of class, poor customer service skills, tone deaf management style, and hostile, sassy behavior. Last year, for their annual holiday sale, we had put a bunch of jeans and t-shirts on hold and were told that they would be opening at 10 o’clock Christmas morning for us to pick up our merchandise(at 50% off). Upon our arrival, we saw that the manager and one other employee were inside but they were not opening the store up. They saw us waiting and eventually the manager, who we’d spoken to the day before, came to see what we wanted. I reminded her that we had come for our held items and she replied, crossly, that they didn’t open until noon. I told her that we had asked specifically the previous day what time they were opening because we had a Christmas party to go to. She said her employee had been mistaken about their opening time and that we’d just have to wait. I explained that we would be missing a Christmas party and lunch if we waited and asked if we could just keep the items on hold and return the following day(the sale was for the rest of the year). She said no, that she wouldn’t do that. We left, frustrated, but decided that we’d already gone all the way into Waikiki so we’d just show up to the Christmas party a little late. After waiting for two hours we returned to find a large crowd also waiting outside the store. We went to the door and peered in to see that the manager and all of her sales folks were huddling around the cash register. It was already past noon and we were already late, so I knocked on the glass and she came out again. Evidently their computer system was not recognizing any of the 50% off sale items and she said they could not open the store until it was fixed. When I asked how long that would be — we were already late — she snapped that if she wasn’t standing there talking to me she’d be able to fix it faster. It was at that point I decided she was a total witch. More than half an hour later they finally opened. Why they couldn’t just ring us up by calculating the 50% off by hand(you know, $ 10 instead of $ 20?), I’ll never know. In any event, we asked for our held items and she started to ring us up. To add insult to injury, she then informed us that the items we’d held were not part of the sale. I pointed to the wall we’d gotten all the items from and said that the signs all said 50% off. She claimed that her staff had mistakenly put non-sale items into the sale areas. I told her that wasn’t my fault or my problem, but she insisted that there was no way she would be able to give us the discount. So, essentially, we’d waited almost three hours longer than we’d expected only to find that because of their mistakes none of our items were on sale. I finally made a comment about how long they ‘d made us wait for items that were essentially full price and she said, indignantly, that we weren’t the only ones who’d had to wait. As if, somehow, that made it any better. The entire episode left such a foul taste in my mouth that I’ve not been back to either of the Lucky stores(the other is in Ala Moana). Any store that is incompetent enough to hire someone like her and put her into a management position doesn’t deserve my business, no matter how good their products are.
