When my father passed away several years ago, among the many items that he left to me and my siblings were Chinese jewelry pieces. Most of the pieces were made of carved green jade that ranged in color from apple green, dark Imperial green and winter melon green. A lot of the pieces were over a century old and brought from China. That being said, all of the jewelry that had gold findings were 24-Karat yellow gold which is buttery-yellow and quite soft. The pureness of the gold causes it to bend, nick or break easily. I had been wearing one of the jade pendants from my father daily when I accidentally snagged the piece and broke its bail. Fortunately, we were in Kahala Mall when I roamed past Liang’s and noticed their sign advertising jewelry repair. The woman was really nice and quoted me a price for a 14K jump ring and a bail. It sounded to be a fair price but I decided to think about it before proceeding. After discussing with my husband, we decided upon just using a jump ring. Its simplicity would suffice as it would not detract from the carved jade. When I turned in my jade piece, they photocopied it twice for identification purposes(one copy as receipt and the other accompanied my jade) and I signed it over to their care. Liang’s has been in business for 40 years in the same location of Kahala Mall. I trust them to provide fair prices and expert workmanship for my jewelry repairs. #322
