Service was okay, but food was very disappointing. I ordered the tofu lo mein w/vegetables. The broccoli tasted fresh, the mushrooms were from a can and the noodles seemed stale. The sauce was so bland that, for the first time in my life, I actually added salt to Chinese food. Waitress, seeing that I didn’t eat much of the food, and turned down a takeout box, should have asked if something was wrong. She did not. Instead, she started chatting with someone, and then wiped her nose with her hand. Oh, and the bathroom smelled like mildew and there was no soap to wash my hands. I’m hoping against hope that the waitress used the last of it(or has another sink available to her) before touching my food, silverware or plate.

The winter melon soup was very tasty, The mochi duck was superb. crispy outside, a little skimpy on the duck. Curry seafood with deep fried haupia was great, They will be shutting down on 4−15−14 for renovation for at least 6 weeks… salt and pepper shrimp was tasty.

The food here is ok but it’s a good location to host large group events. On the night I checked in, it was for the Tsung Tsin Association 96th Annual Spring Banquet. Parking was tough because over 300 people attended the event once the parking garage got full and all street parking around the area(mainly Kapahulu Ave.) was full. Even though it was over 300 people there, it was spacious enough for lion dancers. The staff didn’t serve us and we had to help ourselves except the soup course of the meal. This restaurant will be closing soon for renovations so please call ahead of time before going to ensure they are still open. Noise here is typical Chinese restaurant level so LOUD if you haven’t been to a Chinese restaurant before.

I was pretty disappointed. The food taste nothing like I’ve had before. Noodles were slime slimy and had no flavor(they were gross) the rest of the food was flavor less. I called but the person who answered said that they have a different style of cooking. I’m from California and have had many types of Chinese food and in 20 years living there I’ve never come across this type of Chinese food. Try it at your own risk!

This was a very below average Chinese meal with unfresh salad and food with little flavor. The meat, poultry, and fish on our order were cooked o.k. but lacked taste. The noodles were half bean sprouts and not so fresh looking meat. Our server staff were adequate for the job and did their job well, but they could not cover for the shortcomings in the kitchen. After dinner, my wife asked me to stop by Zippy’s up the street to order something to make up for dinner.

Went to Hee Hing on 2÷2÷14 for dinner. We had the lemon chicken which was pretty good. Also had the egg blossom soup whic the waitress recommended we get an order and a half since we had 6 people. I swear they made one order and added water. It was so watered down. Also had shrimp cake noodle which had a Clorox like smell to it. My daughter and my stomachs began cramping up. Unknown from what exactly. Probably from the food being so salty! Also had the Sezchuan egg plant and the shrimp and cashew taro basket which didn’t excite me and was below average. Our water cups were consistently empty and when we were done eating, the waitress refused to make eye contact with any of us as it was quite obvious that nobody was eating anymore. I finally tracked her down Nd she gave the bill and never came back to get it, so I walked it up to the cashier. Still don’t know if this is protocol here and will never find out because this is the last time I’ll be dining here. I will never recommend this restaurant to any of my inner circle.

1. Value: The price for dim sum saves the day — the food quality is up and down. 2. Food: Not the place for authentic Chinese cuisine when the choy sum with oyster sauce(ask for it on the side as they pour a lot on) is the best dish. But by Hawaiian standards, this place is alright. The spring rolls should be avoided(only 2 per serving and they were deep fried twice); the sui mai were small but tasty; the steamed pork dumplings(with the soup inside) were plentiful(8) for what you paid, but reheated from frozen… at least they tasted alright; the mochi rice balls(basically sticky rice served in dumpling wrap) were second behind the choy sum in taste, and the char siu rice rolls were really a lot of rice rolls with a little bit of char siu. 3. Service: By Chinese restaurant standards, the service was alright; don’t ask about what flavor Chinese tea could be had, as they only seem to respond to «Chinese tea» which was a bad-tasting variation of Chinese«bo-le» tea. 4. Atmosphere: It’s a sizeable restaurant but even at lunch time, it was fairly dim — standard in Western-ized Chinese restaurants, but a little depressing as per normal. The usual suspects for Chinese-style decorations in these types of restaurants were present but not over-bearing. 5. Verdict: The menu tries to appeal to all tastes; this is not the place for those looking for authentic Chinese cuisine of any type. It could be a good«standby» for someone looking for OK dim sum without going to Chinatown or on a limited budget, but it may be best to explore other options first. Street parking is cheapest for this place.

We were the only customers in the restaurant from 5:45pm until about 6:154pm, which was a little disconcerting. But, a friend at work keeps telling me this is a great place to eat, so we stayed despite the slightly creepy feel of the large empty restaurant and the cheesy 1950’s soft ballads that served as music. In the end, we were glad we stayed. After we got past the spring rolls, which were chewy and greasy, the food was very good indeed. The Szechuan Eggplant was a large and tasty portion with a good amount of sweet and heat. The Chow Fun Singapore noodles was a large mound of rich flavors with lots of meat, peppers and onions. The calamari in the Chow Fun was too large and tough for my preference, but I think many people would actually like how it was prepared. The rice was very fluffy yet glutinous and more than enough for two people. The staff was attentive and friendly and there is free parking in the valet lot beneath the restaurant. Both of these things need to also be taken into account when considering a trip to Hee Hing.

Been here only once and that was enough for me. My husband and I arrived, came inside and no one was there to great us. Usually not a good sign. The place was dead. I know Chinese restaurants are not known for their service but I don’t think our server said a word to us other than asking us our order. Nor refilled our drinks. No one was around to even ask for a refill. Food was not that good. Our dishes lacked flavor and sauce. We ordered Peking Duck and Potstickers, neither very good at all. The duck was kind of dry and bland. The potstickers came with a quick generic vinegar sauce. Nothing special about either. Prices would be decent if the food was better. Inside could be cleaner and so could the restrooms for not having any business that day. I will not be returning again.

I’ve been here for lunch and dinner and overall the food and service are decent. We had a dinner party here and they were quite accommodating with planning of banquet room layout, menu and drinks. Their corkage fee was very reasonable so we brought our own wine, beer and soft drinks that evening. We did come down for a «tasting menu» of 3 dishes prior to the menu decision as we were planning to have 7-courses for 6 tables of 10 people each. I had the impression this would be complimentary but when the bill came I was stunned. Dinner service that evening was great but they forgot to place the condiments(soy sauce, hot chili sauce, Chinese mustard, pepper, etc.) on each table so when I mentioned it to one of the waiters, he rushed back and they scrambled to place them on each of the tables after we started to eat our appetizers. The quality of the food was okay and service was par. Overall the attendees had a great time but perhaps they need to fine tune their service. Not worthy of 4-stars from me.

Happy New Years Gangies!!! It was New Years Eve, so I took my co-workers out for lunch to celebrate the end of 2012. Went to one of my all time favorite Chinese local grind places — Hee Hing Restaurant. I’ve been coming to this place for over 22+ years now, ever since I started working full time on my job. We like this restaurant as the people know us here — as we’ve been loyal Hee Hing fans, and the owners are very nice to us too. I mostly come here for lunch, as I like their dim sum… we ordered the following on New Years Eve(see pics) — 1. Steamed Manapua 2. Har Gau(Shimp Dumpling) 3. Sui Mai(Pork Dumpling) 4. Spare Ribs 5. Rice Pouch 6. Custard Tart 7. Shrimp with Spinach Dumpling 8. Oyster Sauce Chicken with Cake Noodle I would say besides the custard tart(yes, I am a custard fiend)…I just love the Oyster Sauce Chicken with Cake Noodle! The chicken was crispy, and the noodles were crunchy on the outside, yet soft in the inside. The rice in a pouch was very good too… as it was loaded with lots of filling too! Yes, it was a feast-o-rama…and after I ate all of this, it felt like nappy time for me! Lol! Lot of parking, as they have a parking lot down stairs. If the lot is full(I’ve never seen that happen during lunch time), then there is metered street parking. Service is always good… fast and friendly! $ 39.11 for the three of us for lunch, with tip — $ 44.96…not bad at all, as we ate a ton of food!

Hee Hing’s Christmas brunch is turning into a family tradition — we’ve gone to the brunch buffet the last few Christmases. Reservations are necessary, the restaurant was pretty empty when we got there at 10am but was full inside with a crowd waiting outside by the time we left. If it is a weekend/holiday it isn’t too hard to find free street parking withing a reasonable distance. The staff was great at filling water, a little less great(though not terrible) at clearing plates. The tea was really good. It got a little bitter towards the end of the meal because it had been steeping too long, but there isn’t much you can do about that. The buffet has a great selection at a decent price — for $ 24/person there was a large variety of salads, chinese dishes, a carving station, dim sum, hawaiian food and desserts. I love Hee Hing’s chinese chicken salad and baked char siu bao, and the roasted pork with buns and plum sauce is pretty darn good too. Today I thought that the roast beef was a little oversalted and the taro cakes were on the dry side, but with the huge spread there are more than enough well-cooked, tasty options to fill you up.

Mmmm, good food! We went here for a pre-holiday party, for work. There were about 20 of us, on a Sunday night, after work. We had the room from 7−10PM. It was a fun time! We paid $ 30/per person. The food was excellent! There was a cash bar outside the room. It is also the type of place that you can bring your own– pupus, desserts, wine/drinks, music, etc for the party rooms, Validated valet parking only, even though it’s only a few steps to your car.

I used to come to Hee Hing a lot when I was younger. My memories of it were fuzzy, but fond. I finally re-visited today after years, since I happened to be at Glam Rok, which is in the same building. Hee Hing definitely lost that«magic» it used to have. It’s definitely in need of some renovations. It seems a bit dingy and run down now. I ordered dim sum for takeout, which was good, but not spectacular. The best thing I got was the pork and«1,000 year old egg» congee. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, when there are other, better, and more conveniently located Chinese restaurants around. I was going to give them 3 stars at first, but bumped it up to 4 stars. Simply because I have fond memories here from my childhood.

As stated before, I’m not a fan of Chinese food. I was dragged here, yet again, by my family for Mother’s Day brunch. I actually came here twice for certain occasions with my family. Each time we came here, it was a buffet for that special occasion. Parking is downstairs and is valet. The food was mediocre but there were some highlights. What makes this buffet unique compared to other Chinese restaurants is that they try to serve Hawaiian food and it’s a little bigger in terms of food selection. The salt and pepper shrimp is by far my favorite here. The noodles, beef brocolli, fried rice and other«safe» fare is good here. They also serve lau lau, roast pork, char siu and desserts. The bad things were the lomi salmon looked pathetic, the poke looked not so fresh and drowned in shoyu, and the rest of their salad area looked meh. It was very crowded on the days I went here. Not sure if it’s because it was a special holiday. The food was ok, but I wouldn’t come here on my own accord.

Seems like everyone I know who has lived on Oahu all their lives, has come here at least once — a wedding reception, funeral, birthday, etc. I can see why — it’s big, spacious, and looks like the perfect venue for large, loud celebrations. Dave F’s g/f had bought a voucher for this place that was expiring soon, so they invited me and my hubby to help them spend it. After browsing through their menu, we decided on the«Hee Hing for Four»($ 79.95), which came with: lemon chicken, walnut chrimp, beef with fresh asparagus, steamed flounder fillet Chinese style, yang chow fried rice and almond float. We added a side order of crispy gau gee to the mix because Dave F. was jonesing for crispy gau gee. :) Overall, I’d say the food was so-so. It wasn’t as tasty and flavorful as I had expected. The quality is more in line with smaller, hole-in-the-wall neighborhood joints like Duk Kee. I expected the portions to be larger too. Unfortunately these guys have their liquor license so it’s not BYOB. We ordered two Heinekens and two Coors lights and our bar tab was almost $ 20. Bottom Line: great place for a large noisy party, but not if they’re foodies.

I’m the Duke here!?! This is new to me… Anyway, when it comes down to it Hee Hing is relatively clean and the food is pretty tasty. Usually, I’m not here to eat a regular 8 course Chinese dinner. Typically, I’m here with my family for a special occasion when Hee Hing has their buffet. Before I touch on how great the buffet is one of the dishes that I do want to comment on is the walnut shrimp. This is probably my favorite chinese dish to have and Hee Hing definitely has one of the best preparations out there. Going back to the buffet, if you’ve never been here for it, you are missing out. The selection of food is LINCREDIBLE… dammit, there it is again, sorry! We’re talking about like 8 different choices of salads, which include chinese chicken salad, lomi salmon and caesar salad. We got food ranging from gyoza, typical chinese dim sum, prime rib and peking duck… yeah, you kinda get the picture. But, if you don’t…THESPREADISAMAZING! That’s what… nevermind. Based on food selection of the buffet, 3 stars! The fourth star comes with the overly attentive wait staff that might not be very pleasant. Lets just say they fill your water up when your low. Anyway, I definitely recommend the buffet for everyone. Remember, the rest of the food here is not bad and the restaurant is relatively clean for a chinese restaurant.

Hee Hing is always a great place for large parties. They provide a podium and room for lion dances or for the kids to move around and play at the party. Although pricier, and won’t beat my favorite restaurant for the quality and price altogether, their food is consistently flavorful. Pork wrap — 4 stars — a mixture of all kinds of ingredients to wrap in lettuce. A really tasty dish not too oily. Kau Yuk with Taro — 4 stars — the meat is tender and comes with taro and bun. The brown sauce blends well with the meat. Ginger Chicken — 4 stars — one of the better ginger chicken I’ve had. The chicken tasted fresh, not pasty or old like some other restaurants. Stuffed duck — 3 stars — lots of duck, and the dish as a whole was flavorful, but when they told me it was stuffed duck, I was expecting the barley and all the other good stuff with it. However, it was duck with broccoli and other vegetables. I think there is only one restaurant on the whole island that makes authentic stuffed duck now, but I have yet to find others. Ginger onion fish — 3 stars — It’s average like any other chinese restaurant. Noodles — 4 stars = since I was at a party, I don’t know which noodles they served, but it was as thick as chinese udon noodles that was very flavorful and the consistency of the noodles was not to soft, not too hard, but just right. Service — 4 stars — the food came very quickly and our waters were consistently filled, plus, they cater to parties, which made it really nice. If they indeed not serve MSG in their foods, their food is the best tasting compared to other restaurants that don’t serve MSG.

My mother has loved this place since I was a kid, and even pointed out people who have worked there for years – and she hasn’t been here for nearly two years. This was a ‘before’ Christmas Meal(yes, late review, my bad!). My mother likes two things – Seafood and Cake Noodle, so obviously this meal would be heavy on both. Bean Curd Dumpling– 4-stars– You get two of these massive bean curds wrapped outside some delicious pork stuffing. Kind of like a big brother to a char siu. If you haven’t had bean curd, the texture is the best part – it’s soft, yet slightly crunchy, breaking apart soft and satisfactory. The flavor is always mild, so the pork pushed it over the top for me. My mom used to always just throw this into her ramen, and I’d gobble it up. The only downside is the sheer size – this is a mouth-filler. It could be better served in four smaller pieces. Shrimp Dumpling– 3-stars– These are the basic, normal shrimp dumplings. When compared to the Kahuku shrimp they serve, it is no comparison. The small shrimp inside these dumplings were nearly tasteless after eating those Kahuku bad boys. Kahuku Shrimp with Cake Noodle– 5-stars– If you ever take my mother out to a Chinese restaurant, get this, and she’ll be your friend forever. The shrimp were huge, sweet and full of flavor. My mother especially enjoyed sucking the heads – «That’s where all the flavor is.» Add in the crunchy, seared cake noodle, and you have a winner. The sauce is deliciously sweet flavored, and compliments the shrimp very well. My mom basically just scooped it up and drenched her plate. There are also green onions here and there, but not of consequence, right? Seafood Garlic Fried Rice– 3 ½-stars– Fried rice is one of my dish specialties. This dish had a very light flavor to it, mostly of the roasted garlic. The rice was nice and fluffy, not soggy or drenched in any sauces. Along with egg, your seafood is shrimp and scallops – which are small and diced pretty well. In this way, you get a random variety of flavor with each bite. Again, green onion is here and there. Clams with Black Bean Sauce– 4-stars– My mother loved these because of their strong clam flavor. For me, the clam was a little overwhelming, so I don’t know if they were cooked just right or not enough. But they do fall off the shell pretty easily. There is a tinge of spice to this dish, in case you’re particular about that. The black bean is always a beautiful combination with clams, very sweet, and almost enough to combat the clam flavor – at least for me. My mother loved it. Stuffed Duck– 4-stars– No, we weren’t done yet. Even they were surprised, too. The look of the dish when it arrived was almost like a sweet-and-sour plate, but this illusion quickly disappeared as we dug into it. This dish has a rich, deep, sweet, nutty flavor. You have chickpeas(garbanzo beans) and barley, with an underlying flavor of licorice. The texture is always a little slimy, like a thick sauce with all the ingredients mixed together. The duck is good, complimenting the core flavors. There were even pieces of lup cheong in for added depth. I don’t like shiitake-type mushrooms – mostly the texture and flavor, but not as potent as black mushrooms. That for me was a turn-off, but for my mother, she targeted those pieces like an expert. Atmopshere– Hee Hing doesn’t change, it still has the semi-regal allure and look, the same spacious rooms and large tables. There is the huge divider way separating you from the view of the street. It’s always a quiet meal, unless you’re near some happy, jocular coworkers on a lunch break or party. Service– This was the deal-breaker. Check. Your. Receipts. Check your receipts. Now, I’m not one to point out things and complain because I don’t need the stress in life, but my mother will examine checks down to the period. We ordered two dumpling plates – we got charged for four. Our clams were on the daily special, but we got charged full-price. Now, I didn’t tell my mom about the clams until after we left, because as I said – I avoid scenes. She was kind of mad at me, but I paid, so oh well, right? Still, the fact it happened twice on one bill was kind of bad. Other than this, the service was good, we were able to change to cake noodle before our dish arrived, and make more orders as we ate. They were very accommodating. Conclusion– This is a good, relaxing place to come for a lunch, maybe a dinner. Keep an eye on what you buy, and make sure you pay for what you ordered! The food was basic, but good Chinese food. Make sure you’re in love with what you order, because most of my dishes were for my mother, which this time, seemed like the opposite of what I liked. And that’s kind of funny.
