We stopped at Gramma’s kitchen for lunch on our way to Hilo. Gramma’s Kitchen is a small mom & pop style joint. It is fairly small inside and we had to split up our large group of 10 people, but there was no wait for a table at 11:00. The kid’s menu included both breakfast and lunch and the meals were affordable at about $ 7 each. The price included a drink. Two of our kids split the pancakes and bacon. The portion was huge, so I was glad that they split it. The kid’s hamburger was also large and included fries. My husband and I split a burger and the garlic cheese fries. The burger was good, but the garlic cheese fries are a must have! We also tried the onion rings. I have to say, they may have been the best onion rings that I have ever had. The breading was crisp, but not greasy and the onion was perfectly cooked, not too mushy and not too crisp. The service was also wonderful. We would definitely recommend.

Very tasty. Good fish, killer salad, excellent Portuguese bean soup. Service was quick and friendly, and they hooked up our hungry kid with a snack on sitting down.

Had lunch here with my father a few days ago while on a trip ‘up North’ from Pahoa in Puna. I checked out various Unilocal reviews and ratings of places to eat in Honoka’a and found rave reviews about the fish and chips here. Reviews were not misleading! Deliciously flaky fish, wonderfully crisp coating/breading, and great chips. The sweet chili sauce served was a surprising and appreciated change from my usual tartar(also served). The size of the dish was perfect to share between two with a side salad for a bit of greens(oriental dressing was delicious!) I would be remiss if I did not also mention the general ambiance of the restaurant. With a lot of photographs of the town’s past and a more than generous glimpse of paniolos and horse-country of the district, the space gave a nostalgic nod to local history. While eating, the bright and bubbly interaction of the staff with locals and regular customers was refreshing to witness. I absolutely recommend this restaurant and will certainly be returning on my next trip ‘up North’.

Late Post from yesterday, May 27, 2016: Since we were in the Honoka’a area, my friend and I decided to have lunch at Grandmas Kitchen, it was very delightful! Reason being it was the last day of(what they call) Western week & the owner, Larry, was the acting sheriff of the town! The food was great, my friend ordered a cheese burger deluxe with regular fries, while I ordered one of the specials, a soft shell crab burger deluxe — WOW! Talk about delicious, it was pretty amazing!!! Truly enjoyed the meal!!! The service was good, just a bit loud as our waitress was talking to us, so literally the table next to us and around us could hear what we were ordering and we could hear what they were ordering. I know our waitress is part of the ownerships family, I believe she is Larry’s daughter, but her volume was rather loud! I guess it might be due to the fact that they may be trying to engender merriment, fun and a light atmosphere, seemingly anyway!

Great food, outstanding service! This time was amazing and I tried the fish and chips… I’m hooked! My new go to dish for when I want some deep fried goodness. Cooked perfectly so the inside was moist but outside was crispy and meat was flaky. Will probably go back again tomorrow!

The best food in town! Also, visit the Honokaa Plantation Museum next door. Larry Ignacio gives tours of the place. He is the owner of both this restaurant and the museum. I had the ono fillet on the salad. It was so good!

Heard many good things about this place so decided to give it a try while home for the holiday. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. I started with a breakfast burger which has the crispest bacon, a fried egg and cheese on a sweet bread bun. It was absolutely heavenly! Next up was the Crab Cake Benedict. The crab cakes were unlike any I’ve tried before. The shape is similar to a hush puppy and you get 3 on each English muffin, 6 in total. Crab cakes contain very little filler and were perfectly fried. The eggs were served over easy instead of poached but I’m definitely not complaining. I think I actually prefer them that way now having tried it. The home made hollandaise was perfect. Rich, creamy with a hint of lemon complimented the crab cakes perfectly. We also tried the French toast which were thick slabs of Portuguese sweet bread battered and fried and served up light and fluffy. Overall an awesome experience. I will definitely be back to try other menu items.

This place serves the best corned beef has I’ve ever tasted. I would seriously drive the 1 ½ hours just to come here to eat the corned beef hash again. It was so much food and I still almost ate the entire thing. My husband had the soft shelled crab sandwich, and my mother in law had the chopped steak, and they both said it was good. The service was quick and the workers were all friendly. It’s a great restaurant in my moms hometown.

We stumbled upon this place while driving to Waipoi Lookout. BESTBREAKFASTONTHEISLAND!!! I had the Big Breakfast with Portuguese sausage and French toast. Hubby had the Country breakfast. Needless to say there was no conversation once the plates were sat in front of us. Love the quaint seating and the local, family feel was a pleasant bonus. Will have to try lunch there on the way back.

Wow. Loved going here purely based on the hospitality and energy. Jeanne was my server and she was very friendly and knowledgeable. I saw pictures on the wall which I had assumed were the ‘grandmas’ the restaurant was named after. She let me know that they were indeed the owners, Chris’, grandmothers. While we were chatting, Chris, who also does the cooking, popped out of the kitchen and said hi. He, similarly was very nice and full of positive energy. I had the ‘country breakfast’ with rice and Portuguese sausage. Everything was perfect, including the rice, and I really enjoyed the coffee. This place had happiness everywhere. The servers were all smiling and having fun. Perhaps the sign they have behind the front counter best described their values/goals: ‘BEHAPPY; always tell the truth; laugh out loud; WORKHARD; love one another; keep your promises; HELPOTHERS; DOYOURBEST; say your prayers, please and thank you; try your best; use kind words; SMILE.‘ The customers were also very happy and learned from some at the table next to mine, that it is frequented by regulars, even from Waimea, a town probably 20 minutes from here. Overall what I really enjoyed about this place was the very welcoming and family feeling you immediately envelopes you upon walking in. I went by myself and they didn’t care that I took a whole table. Of course maybe they would sit others by me, which would have been fine. I wish there were places in Colorado which had similar atmospheres where their focus was on ensuring your experience is the beat one you could have. Maybe I just am a small town gal at heart?

Grandma’s Kitchen: Best Burger on the island, hands down James Brown! On the way to Waipio Valley Lookout, we needed to fuel up(our stomachs needed sustenance, badly) prior to hiking. Very crowded, I could tell the majority of the folks were tourists BUT there was one empty table left open as though it was waiting just for us! I ordered the chopped steak n onions with a side of mashed taters with gravy. Steak and onions hit the spot! Nicely marinated and filling, I definitely had no complaints here. Their deluxe burger, with grilled onions and extra crispy bacon added was DABOMB! The meat, the cheese and bacon melts in yo mouth, juicy and produced the biggest smile I have ever seen on my hon’s face that week. Bookmark this one folks.

We were visiting friends on the big island and they brought us here because they knew I was a food guy… this spot did not disappoint! This restaurant is definitely quaint on the inside… not real big, but cozy… kind of like a diner environment. The service was good and the menu had a fairly good size selection of food. They also had specials posted as well. The bathroom situation is located out the back door and up the stairs… not a bad thing when you think about it… The wife had the chop steak and I had the special, which was a fish and chips plate consisting of Ono and soft shell crab. The chop steak was good. A very large portion with lots of onions and mushrooms. It was tasty and there was plenty of meat mixed in. The fish and chips was unbelievable… I have had many, many orders of fish and chips in my life and this was probably in my top ten. The Ono was flaky and soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The soft shell crab was cooked perfectly and was not ‘crabby smelling’ at all. The fries were done right and it was a very large plate of food. At first I was worried I might not finish it all, but once I tasted the food… it was no problem! I will definitely be back here to eat again!

Best brunch spot on the island! If you are staying in Hilo, it is worth the drive up to Grandma’s. We came here on a Saturday and we didn’t experience a long wait(about 15 min). The people here effortlessly make you feel right at home and don’t rush you if you’re feeling indecisive on what to order. My friends and I did family style with our food. We started off with some Portuguese bean soup, pot roast, fish and chips, and a side of Mac salad. Portions were perfect to share(or even just to have as a personal entrée). Mac salad was probably the best I had on big island, while the rest were comforting and hearty. We still had room and decided to split the lilikoi cheezcake. You have to have room for that cheezcake because it was amazing! Unlike New York style cheesecake, this was light and did not make any of us feel guilty for indulging on dessert. I don’t think I can really compare this to any type of cheesecake I’ve tried, so definitely worth trying. Seriously, Grandma’s is worth squeezing in the itinerary.
