Unilocal 365 Challenge 2015 #26/365 Reed’s Bay is a good beach and a bad beach depending on what type of activity you want to do. Things it’s a good beach for: –Stand up paddle boarding –Kayaking –Boating –BBQ’s/Family get-togethers Things it’s not a good beach for: –Swimming –Tanning –Diving –Catching waves I’ve been here a couple times, and both times have been for stand up paddle boarding. It’s a good beach for that because on a nice day, there aren’t many waves, and it’s much easier to stay balanced than it is when it’s choppy. The beach area has been revamped with new grass and new coral in front of the beach. Before they fixed it up, it was filled with weeds and really ugly, but now it looks like a decent beach park. They also allow you to have pop-up tents and a BBQ grill. With the renovations they also made new bathrooms along with showers outside. Always a plus for a beach park. As with all beaches in Hilo, the«sand» isn’t really sand. It’s more like silt, or like a mixture of sand, dead leaves, and mud. Feels really squishy and gross between your toes. There’s also a lot of rocks so unless you have super Hawaiian feet, it hurts to get into the water. There’s also more hidden rocks underwater, and I’ve stubbed my toes too many times while navigating through the murky water. Being that it’s directly next to Ice Pond, the water is pretty cold. If you’re paddle boarding or kayaking, it would probably be in your best interest to stay dry on top of your water vehicle of choice. If you’re looking for sunshine and nice white sand to lay on, don’t come here. This is Hilo. It’s raining about 80% of the time. Instead, take the hour plus drive to the other side of the island for the more picturesque beaches.

Reeds Bay is a small beach park near the airport. We only came here since my BF and I had a kanak attack after breakfast at Ken’s. It’s a nice place to get in a peaceful nap but its not ideal to go swimming. The water is shallow and gravelly. I noticed it’s a popular spot to go fish though.

Small beach park on Banyan Drive near a number of small hotels. It is kind of like an ocean pool as it is somewhat shallow rather than deep. There is parking at this beach though on gravel. Plenty of banyan trees as it is on Banyan Drive creates a feeling of a place in midst of ruins. Location is mostly inland so it does not look very choppy here. The area near Coconut Island looks a bit more appealing visually, but this place is a good place to unwind. Kind of has a hot tub-esque feeling about it.
