Within walking distance from Hawaiian Style Café on Manono Street, you can walk or drive to Atebara Chips. They are the originators of potato chips in Hawaii and the first ones to introduce Taro Chips. This family company has been in business since 1936 and is still kicking! What’s great is that they’re a green/sustainable company. They use fresh island grown products, all natural with no preservatives with ALL products being made by hand in Hilo, Hawaii. Customer service is really friendly. They have a sample table in the retail store which I love because it makes decision making so much easier! Growing up, I remember my Grandpa buying Atebara chips for my brother and I. RIP Gramps! He was 99 years old and he just passed away on Sunday 8÷16÷2015. Atebara’s is open Monday thru Friday from 8 – 4 pm and Saturdays from 9 – 3 pm. The retail store is small and luckily has AC! Everything they do is hand made. From cooking straight to packaging, no robots exist for their operations. Atebara’s aside from potato chips, they make cookies, chocolates and omiyage or gift baskets too. My favorite flavor is the Furikake potato chips. I’ll admit they may seem oily but just think about all the work that got put into making that one chip, haha. Other flavors available are original, Ginger Garlic Sweet Potato and Ulu(Breadfruit) chips. In the cookie category, they make cookies with actual potato chips baked in to them. They have Taro Chip, the regular Atebara chip, Sweet Potato Chip and Li Hing Mui cookies. All of these are great tasting products. In addition, they have Taro cookies! Some flavors are Coconut Taro, Dark Chocolate Taro and Ginger Taro cookies. The Ginger Taro cookies I love! The flavor is all over resembling Ginger Schnapps… mmmmmmmmmmmm! Support local business, support Atebara Potato Chips!

Small family run chip shop. We got the Merrie Monarch Special, by 47 oz bags(get the 5th free. They have samples of all their goodies to try, which is great! Sampled the ginger sweet potatoe chip, so good, had to get one of them too! They’re known for their taro chips, but have other goodies. Close by Hawaiian Style Café and Big Island Candies and worth the stop!

Hilo’s finest locally made chips that comes in a large assortment. Why buy regular bagged store chips when you can try fresh chips that uses local produce. Don’t leave Hilo without a bag. You won’t be disappointed.

We were visiting Big Island Candies when I found out there was a potato chip factory nearby and HAD to go. Chips are one of my favorite foods and Atebara chips are one of the best! The store itself is really small and you can buy chips, cookies, nuts and other little snacks. I love the original, furikake and the purple sweet potato. Atebara chips are not too thin, not too thick, super crunchy with just the right amount of salt. They can be a little pricey, but they are hand made in Hilo! If you love chips like I do, swing by Atebara and have a taste!

When people think about omiyage from the Big Island they usually automatically think of «Big Island Candies». Don’t get me wrong, they’re great and all, but just a little down the street and around a corner from the ginormous BIC factory is Atebara’s. Atebara Potato Chips Co. is, as obviously stated in the name, is a potato chip shop, and it’s been around for a long long time(You may even recognize the design on the bags). They’ve got freshly fried potato chips, cookies and chocolates. You can even get chocolate with potato chips in them! Trust me, it’s good stuff that you’ll want to buy and devour. You may have a little bit of trouble finding Atebara’s if you’re not already familiar with the place. It’s on Manono St., but it’s set a little back from the street, and it’s not your traditional looking shop/chip factory. It’s actually looks more like a couple old Hilo houses(the factory on your right, and the store on your left). They’ve got a variety of potato chip flavors here ranging from the original plain flavor, to sweet potato chips, to ulu chips, to a new hot and spicy flavor potato chip! There’s also a variety of candies and cookies too numerous to list. You just have to check it out! And when you do go there for omiyage, can you bring me back something to snack on??? Thanks! :D

Like everyone else says, it’s a hop skip and a jump from Big Island Candies, but keep your eyes peeled because it looks like a house. I discovered Atebara at the Chocolate Festival and I love their ulu chips. They have a wide variety of different chips and make gift baskets too. They have lots of samples which is really great. It’s probably a little on the pricey side for a bag of chips, but for me if I get something that’s not common like furikake or my fave ulu, than I don’t mind.

Came here after visiting Big Island Candies because I needed something salty from all the sweets I had! I love how it looks like a little house! We walk in and good thing no one else was there because the 3 of us basically filled the room! We tried the sweet potato, taro, sweet potato with garlic and ginger, potato chips with furikake and ulu chips. They were all really good! I couldn’t help take more samples! I settled on the sweet potato with garlic and ginger chips! For $ 5.50 a bag, it was definitely a splurge! I wish there was more in a bag! I would’ve bought more, but for $ 5.50 I couldn’t…and I would need to pack it in my luggage. It was a good experience, but I’d rather go to the market and get a bag of Terra chips!

If you drive by too quickly, you’ll think the storefront was someone’s home. The store is the size of a small bedroom and with three of us there, it was crowded! Chips galore — regular, sweet potato, ginger/garlic, furikake, taro, ulu(breadfruit). Their regular chip is crispy, slightly oily and salty. The ginger/garlic tastes like a stir fried sweet potato. Try the Ulu just because you can’t get it anywhere else. The Ulu chips are firm, not salty at all. They also have a line of cookies… Ample samples are available so you can be adventurous before springing $ 8 for a package. If you are visiting from out of state, stop by the store for a local taste.

Another trip down Nostalgia lane for my parents. Atebara has the Sweet potato and taro chips. The big bad was like $ 15, pretty pricey for chips I’d say. They also had the original chips which just seemed really oily and compares to any other oily chip. They recently make cookies out of their chips, sort of like a cornflake cookie but with chips instead. Not to great… And if you go to the actual store, they have samples, don’t try the Jalapeño chip if you can’t handle spicy. I thought it was okay, but my dad almost started tearing.

Try the Ulu chips! Great chips, overall. The sweet potato and Taro are the best. Can’t say much about the cookies and candy, because I don’t eat that. But the chips are better than that massed-produced Frito-Lay stuff.

Some of our local family wanted to take us here, and it was pretty cool. They have an incredible amount of samples put out. Aside from chips, they have sweet stuff too. Their specialty cookies mix different kinds of chips,(sweet potato, sweet purple potato, taro chips, etc.) with classic cookie flavors,(chocolate chip, shortbread, gingersnaps, etc.) In some of the cookies you really don’t taste the chips, but they’re alright. I really liked the gingersnaps, other than that i wasn’t overly impressed. They also have chocolates mixed with chips. This isn’t for everyone, but it’s fun to sample the different combinations. If you’re in the area and have a free afternoon, it’s a quick stop. It’s located in what appears to be someones house. The woman working there is friendly, and didn’t seem to mind to much that we didn’t buy anything. Although other people with us did. It’s an interesting local specialty.
