The Grill

I am a manager at big box retailer in Deerfield. I held a contest on a Sunday morning to drive credit for the store and bought lunch for the winners.
I am new to the Deerfield location. I previously worked in Niles and reside in the city. When everyone stated they wanted burgers I pulled out my phone and logged on to Grubhub. This was the only place that delivered American fare other than Rosati’s, so I went with it.
I ordered about three meals and an appetizer which came out to around fifty dollars and left an eight dollar tip. When I received my confirmation email the delivery time was over two hours, which just didn’t work for the lunch situation at work.
I called Grubhub to cancel and they called the restaurant. They stated they had already started the order so wouldn’t cancel, however it wouldn’t be delivered for another hour and twenty minutes because I was too far from them.
I’m an incredibly patient person when it comes to service and food so I said fine.
When the delivery driver called my phone screaming that she couldn’t find my address and where was I and if I was in so big of a rush I should have clarified my location, I was done. Really? The address isn’t clarification enough?
Now I know things happen, but when restaurants register with Grubhub they dictate their own radius for delivery. I had no idea where the place was located, just that they offered delivery to my location.
I also didn’t need to pay sixty dollars for cold food delivered by a whiny driver that doesn’t know how to input an address into GPS or that Home Depot is large and orange.
I’ll be honest, the food was amazing even though it was freezing which is why I gave two stars. I can just imagine how great it would have been hot. Also, if the driver hadn’t been so rude on the phone my review would have been different. I can understand extended delivery times, being busy or a rude employee. All three were just too much for me.
I’ll never eat here again nor will any of the people who work with me.

I’ve lived in the area for about 8 years. I think I’ve been to nearly every restaurant in the highwood/​highland park and lake forest area. The food at the grill is incredible. The burgers, apps, and salads are better than anything else I’ve found in the area. I’ve had numerous burgers and salads from other well known places in town, and they really don’t come close to the food at the grill.
If you live in the area, or just visiting… absolutely try the grill. You will not be disappointed. The bar is set for good food in this part of the north shore. But from my experience… it’s a race for second.

We got delivery and we didnt get untensils or napkins. I asked for no toppings on my buger and got lettuce and pickles. Also, when ordering i thought Cottage fries were going to be some sort of French fries, but they were really greasy homemade potatoe chips. The price was average, but the French toast strawberry dessert was FANTASTIC. I would order two just to have that as my meal next time.

Reading the reviews below, I thought I went to a different restaurant. I double checked on Google Map and, lo, this is the place.
I met some friends here for happy hour after work on a weekday evening. We were the only people in the place, which was concerning at 5:30 p.m. The beer selection is terrible. Guinness in cans? What the literal hell?
We ordered spinach and artichoke dip for the table. It was good, but nothing memorable or crave-​worthy. A few people ordered entrees and all seemed in agreement that it was fine for what it was; nothing special and nothing exciting.
Service was epically terrible. Again, we were the only people in the place and we were a group of six or seven. It took just shy of forever to get drink orders taken at the beginning and then getting our check at the end took so long a few people left cash with another person so they could catch their train. At that point, we hadn’t seen a staff member in well over 15 minutes. Where were they? What were they doing? We’ll never know, but I hope the story is better than our experience that day.

This is my family’s FAVORITE restaurant to go to. They are always so attentive and the food is great! I had a chop salad and it was the best chop salad that I EVER had! i order it all the time. And their homemade soup was great! Craig and his wife are so sweet and attentive and I really love this restaurant and the food.

Solid restaurant experience all the way around.
My kids have been obsessed with wanting to come here. I think it’s because The Grill is part of food day at their school (great marketing endeavor BTW, because the boys got us to take them there)! For dinner I had a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries, hubby had a veggie burger (on a wrap), and the kids ordered the slider kids meal with shoestring potatoes.
Seated right away since they just opened for dinner service at 4PM, prior to getting a menu we were asked what we wanted to drink. We ordered the boys chocolate milk, but realized after looking at the menu Kool-​Aid was included. Though we don’t let our kids drink this Kool-​Aid, it would have been nice if we knew up front. No biggie though.
Quality burger was cooked exactly the way I like it. Nice portion size, and I liked having the option of provolone cheese instead of the usual choices like cheddar or American. Overall, I really enjoyed it but it still doesn’t beat my favorite burger from City Park Grill in Highland Park. The sweet potato fries were just OK. I prefer fresh cut, and these were most likely prepackaged frozen. Next time I will select the hand-​cut cottage fries. Nice option for burgers, they offer a wrap if you don’t want bread. I still prefer a bun, but my husband got the wrap with his veggie burger and said it was tasty.
Speaking of the veggie burger, he said it had great flavor and I did get to try his hand-​cut fries. They were pretty decent.
Boys’ sliders were nicely portioned and good quality beef. Loved the individually wrapped package of shoestring potato’s served with their meal. Honestly, I haven’t tasted these since grade school! Took me back to the good old days and reminded me of school lunch and my Walton’s lunch box for some reason (man I was a geek)!
Price. $ 40 for four with a tip. For $ 10 less I would have given them four stars. Burgers about $ 9. Sliders approx. $ 5. I’m a cheapskate so I drink water, but the water didn’t have the best taste. So, I recommend to order a drink. If I come back it will be during the week for one of their daily specials.
Ambiance. Nice, and we took particular note of the great selection of music. The volume was also perfect. Not too loud, and just right to enjoy it. Bathrooms nice, clean, and toasty warm.
Kid-​friendly, vegetarian friendly, good service, good quality food.

As I said in my review, we told both the manager who met us at the door and the server at our table that we had a Groupon. To say that both of them «misunderstood», not once but twice, is just a little hard to believe, don’t you think?
In addition, the server said that he was told to tell us that you were refusing to honor the Groupon. In my business, any customer satisfaction issue has to be dealt with by management, no exceptions. So, yes, your husband was hiding behind the server.
To say that he was too busy to deal with the situation himself is, frankly, an admission that you don’t put a very high premium on customer service. That certainly is your prerogative; however, you shouldn’t be surprised when that disregard of customer service results in negative reviews.

I was in the area and a Groupon Now showed up. I figured I’d give it a try.
I’m glad I did. One of the specials that day was a Meatball Sub.
The meatball sub was really good. The meatballs were juicy and full of flavor. It was covered in cheese then toasted to perfection. It was good!
It came with what appeared to be home-​made potato chips. They were nice and warm and had good flavor.
The atmosphere inside is what I would call «nice bar and grill». The person helping me was very nice and did a great job explaining the specials.
The prices weren’t cheap, but there was a lot of food for the money.
Next time I’m in the area I will consider returning!

My friend and I came here with a living social deal, and after our meal, we were so, so grateful for that living social deal.
To be fair, the food was pretty good. I got the veggie burger, and it was thick and homemade– no Morning Star frozen patties here. The bun was toasted, and the waitress told me I could have whatever I wanted on it, which makes me think that I could have ordered grilled onions (which are on some of their other burgers) if I had thought of it. I also got to sub out their cottage fries (essentially homemade potato chips) for broccoli. Unseasoned, steamed broccoli, but still. That’s a luxury I appreciate.
What I don’t appreciate is being made to wait a half hour before my order is taken while the waitress literally has one other table to attend to. Are you kidding me? Even with the $ 2 off angel hair pasta deal on Tuesday nights, that was fairly absurd to sit through. Our food came out quickly after that… But honestly, how could it not?
THERE WERE FOUR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANT.

Reasonable prices, great location and even better food! Went here strictly for sliders and really enjoyed the quality of the place. Will be back with the hubby and family as they have very good burgers. Co-​workers also rave about their salads so I will def. give those a try next time I’m in the area!!! For now I’m in slider heaven and I’m very picky in choosing those perfect lil mini burgers :)

This was our third choice of restaurants in this small town. We were headed for a highly rated mexican place that was closed for the sabbath, the next mexican restaurant only accepted cash.
So, we walked into this very empty restaurant. Nice sports memorablia and clean. Service was good but I did mention it was empty.
The burger fare was a little pricey but I figured it was due to the neighborhood.
My son-​in-​law had a BYOB… it was gone very fast! My daughter had a reuben that had copious amounts of corned beef and the rye was not greasy. An all around good sandwich. I had the oriental chicken salad. It was a tasty version. My son had a buffalo chicken and he had to ask for blue cheese to cool his mouth off. The sandwiches all came with home made potato chips. They were perfectly cooked and not greasy but they did not season them.
An enjoyable meal.

Came here to «celebrate» the end of our softball season. Our crew of about 6 adults and 10 kids sat outside on a beautiful Aug evening.
Service was a bit slow, which my understanding was due to a staff member emergency.
The food was VERY good. None of us ordered anything fancy, but everyone enjoyed their food.
I had the Grill Phil, which was basically your typical Philly cheese steak, but the bread, meat and cheese combination was cooked very well and I thoroughly enjoyed it (not a crumb left on the plate).
Others had salads, which they said where pretty good. My best bud had the Salmon club, which he said was very good.
The kids, all but a few had the noodles, which come with a Jay’s shoestring chips (I don’t think I have seen these since I was a kid back in the 80’s). They are currently running a kids meal special @ $ 3 vs regular $ 4.95 on weekdays; which was a nice treat.
For desert we had a few of the S’mores, which you make yourself table side. Somewhat of a pricey treat @ $ 8.95, for what amounts to a few sticks, marshmallows, 2 chocolate bars and graham crackers. But they present it with a nice table grill (think Bo Bo or Pu Pu Plate @ Chinese restaurant) .
They provide board games to play, but at the same time have beers on tap (Fat Tire); so fun for kids of all ages.
I highly recommend a visit, especially during the summer months.

Food is good, but prices are a little high for a burger. There are plenty of choices for burgers, sandwiches, etc. You have the option of building your own. I’ve had the buffalo chicken sandwich and I thought it was good. I’ve also had the portobello mushroom burger, which is one of the favorites on their menu, but I’ve had better.
Service is good, but a little slow (maybe because we were starving after a long day of moving boxes)

The Grill isn’t going to change your life. It’s not Charlie Trotter’s, it’s not Alinea, and so on. But it’s good at what it serves, which is simple American cuisine — soups, salads, sandwiches, all that jazz.
There is a pretty good selection here. The corn chowder they serve sometimes is tasty and flavorful. I’m also a huuuge fan of the hummus and delicious, warm whole-​wheat pita, served with cucumbers and onions. Great for splitting.
I’ve had really good salads here. The portions aren’t overwhelming, but they are still satisfying… and they leave room for dessert. The desserts are supposedly amazing. You can create your own smores! Pretty cool.
The Grill is pretty average, so it makes it that much worse that it’s on the pricier side. That said, I keep going back there… I guess the food is good enough to warrant it.

For what they charge, this place should be nicer & the food should be better. Their prices are on par with places like the Grand Lux Café – but their food is not as good.
My hubby & I went there for dinner & while he enjoyed his burger, my salad was very bland – they were skimpy on the chicken & the portion was rather small for price.
The inside of this place was rather blah – nothing at all to write home about – maybe it is a good place to have drinks, but for dinner, there is just no ambiance. Outside seating is nice, but be forewarned you will hear the Metra since it goes right be there.
If you are in the area, maybe you should think about trying another place.

A few friends and I were there last night. We have dined there before but the food and service were both weak. It was basically empty so there would be no reason why our service was lacking. Don’t waste your time…

This place is awesome. Went with my three sons, my girlfriend and her daughter. Not only is this place kid friendly but the food was really really good. They have board games reminiscent of the blue frog in Chicago. The food was fresh and flavorful and the service attentive and friendly. The highlight is for desert they bring out a fire pit surrounded by marshmellows, chocolate and grahamcrackers.

Most Original Name… goes to a restaurant… not named The Grill. Maybe they were being facetious? Maybe they hadn’t decided when they filled out the zoning application?
At any rate, my colleagues and I were looking to try something new in the hood of Highwood and it was close to where we parked. I couldn’t really tell from the outside if it was a Backyard Burger or not. Stepping in the door confronted by a large menu, however, I noticed there was more than just angus beef and waffle fries.
There were some creative specials; I only wish the waiter had mentioned them (though I was already set on my order) All the sandwhiches can be put on a whole wheat tortilla, which is point one for me. White bread is only good as a nickname. I got my steak sandwich served so accurately cooked to a tender Medium rare I want to hug the chef. That is if the chef looks like Monica in Friends. At any rate I was out the door with a bill that wasn’t that bad and a meal that was fantastic. The interior was slightly upscale but there were a few large TVs too; kind of like a upscale restaurant with a bit of a sports bar that doesn’t try to hard. The waiter seemed to be the bartender at the time and he was sharp and quick with everything. You’ve been Unilocaled.

I’ve been here 3 times, twice for drinks, and once for dinner. The Grill is decorated very simply. There is a small bar, if you are waiting for a table or just want a few drinks. The restaurant is rarely crowded, but has steady business. It’s typical American style food and tastes good, but is nothing exceptional. It’s a good place to go if you don’t want to wait or don’t have a reservation for more up scale Highwood restaurants. It’s a good spot for a quick lunch or dinner.
