I was a frequent customer and I am a 10 year resident of highland park. The food is passable and probably the Second best Chinese food option in town. But after today’s experience I will never return there and I would encourage other people to consider what transpired today before choosing this budget fast food Chinese American restaurant. On a Saturday afternoon around 230 I pulled into the parking lot and parked. My daughters pediatrician office is in the adjacent building. We come here frequently so I have no idea what provoked this incident. The incident: A middle-aged came rushing out of the medical building and told me I couldn’t park there. I asked him to Identify himself and he began shouting, not entirely coherently. Not screaming but definitely yelling. He entered my personal space and I felt slightly concerned for my safety but eventually the man identified himself as the alleged owner of the buildings. He demanded to know my business and I told him it was none of his business what I was doing here. He said if I didn’t tell him what I was doing there he was going to have my car towed. Even though I had no idea if this is was just a crazy man or the actual property owner I decided to tell him. I informed him that I frequent a patron of the a few businesses here and that ought to be enough for a stranger to know about what I’m doing. I then firmly but politely asked him to get out of my face and I walked into china star. I placed my order and the man followed me in and got in my face again. No longer feeling intimidated by a crazy seeming person since now I was in a public business with plenty of witnesses I told him to stop following me to get out of my face or I would call the police. The young woman behind the counter and one of the cooks at china star informed me that I was rude and demanded to know where I parked. I told her where I parked and then she claimed, «I probably park in a handicapped spot.» I invited her to go look at my car to see where I parked and she refused. She and the cook again told me I had treated the man rudely. I was literally stunned for a moment that they would take a ranting man’s word over a frequent customers. The extent of their observation of our interaction was limited to the man entering her place of business and publiclyy berating me before I said a word. I did not initiate conversation nor follow this strange man around. I did however tell him firmly but politely to stop following me and get out of my face. Why bother to write all this up? Well the one fact I haven’t mentioned was that everyone in this equation except me appeared to be of Chinese descent. I can only assume that this was racially motivated. Why else would a business owner take a stranger’s side when there was no evidence of me, a frequent customer, being rude or even weird in anyway. Fortunately a new Chinese place in town recently opened and it is excellent. This matter doesn’t end here on Unilocal — because I will be contacting Better Business Bureau onMonday.

Ordered the Chicken Lo Mein with no vegetables. Fortunately, there were not any vegetables in the dish. Unfortunately, there was a cooked fly. Last time I get Chinese on a lunch break.

Dirty atmosphere… owners need to invest more time and resources into the restaurant. The food is fine despite the 5 tiny pieces of pork in my «pork» fried rice

Sheesh, what’s with the bad reviews. This place is fast, decent, and you know what you’re getting into: 1. It’s fake chinese food, so it’s not gourmet. 2. It’s takeout, so the place isn’t fancy 3. It’s Chinese, their not rude, that’s just our culture!

I’ve been coming to China Star since the Fall of 2008 and it is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Highland Park. If you dine in they give you large portions. Last week I ordered General Tso’s Chicken and was amazed at how large the amount was. My mom loves their Egg Foo Young. I love their Fried Chicken Wings. These are the best wings you will find in the area. There is something I love about dining out in Highland Park. It is probably because it is away from the insanity of New Brunswick. The prices at China Star are also very reasonable. It has a small dining area and this is good if you don’t like overcrowded restaurants. Overall if you are looking for Chinese food in Northern Middlesex County, you should definitely visit China Star.

I stopped here over the weekend because it was the first place I saw that was open. Small eating area inside, I don’t think they expect people to really eat in there but there are about 3 – 4 tables and a television you can watch. Big menu, I think most Chinese food places do. Decent prices and good food. I ordered the vegetarian broccoli, it’s my favorite and it was made correctly! I used to order beef with broccoli but since I don’t eat meat anymore, I still like the broccoli with that sauce. This is the only place that I can order it like this without it being so complicated. Ordered egg drop soup and it was yummy. I wish they gave more rice with the platter but that’s really my only complaint. $ 7 minimum on credit cards!

Typical Chinese takeout. The scallop with garlic sauce with pork fried rice and hot n sour soup at $ 6 is a good deal but nothing to write home about. Ok. Kinda dingy definitely more of an affordable take out place.

I’ve eaten at this china star many times, for many years. I used to live close, I’ve moved and still drag my family 10 miles to buy this Chinese food. WELL, tonight I was eating my left over pepper steak and onion, and noticed a black speck. I picked it out and noticed it was a small small small gnat. EW. So I picked it out examined it disgustingly, & debated if I was going to be disgusting, & eat the rest. WELL, while I was sitting there I noticed something on the side of the container, an almost transparent little tiny tiny insect. I was MORTIFIED. I examined the rest of my food & found tiny little bugs all over it. I’m really disgusted. Their food tastes excellent & I LOVE this place, but now I feel like I have bugs in my teeth. I was really depressed to throw my left overs in the garbage :(but I can’t knowingly eat insects. If you’re going to get food from here please examine your food thoroughly. Sincerely, a long time customer, who is very very sad now :(goodbye great tasting Chinese food. Best of luck everyone else.

Not much to say, pretty typical fast food Chinese. They’re mighty fast for delivery anywhere in HP/NB. Delivery is your best bet because it’s not someplace you want to sit and eat at.
