Hate to say, but this place has closed down. It is now a fish(egads) house.

When visiting with a friend of mine in the South Suburbs we generally spend at least a little bit of time looking around the area for hot dog joints to stop in at and try out. On one such weekend afternoon we came across a place called King Dog in Hickory Hills. I stopped in and immediately looked over the menu before settling on a hot dog combo. Within a few minutes my order was ready and it was time to dig in. The first thing I noticed about the hot dog from the combo was that it was jumbo. This thick dog was skinless but had a good flavor to the meat itself and was properly heated. It came on a soft non-poppy seed bun with neon green relish and some nicely diced onions. A tomato slice was wedged in at the bottom of the bun, there was a fairly thinly cut pickle slice over the top with just the right length and a few sport peppers on the dog as well. Overall this was a very good hot dog and being a jumbo was a pretty good value. I also tried the fries here, and was I in for a surprise, or should I say surfries. These fries are absolutely great, these are fries that are battered in some way in addition to being fried. These are among the very best french fries I’ve had anywhere and are definitely unique tasting. I’d highly recommend visiting here for the fries alone. Overall I’d say this was a four star dog, but the size and value of the hot dog combined with top quality fries pushed this place from a four star review to a five. As far as the name King Dog goes, maybe it’s an Elvis reference so we’ll close this review with these lyrics(sing along if you know the melody). You ain’t nothing but a King dog. I’m dyin for your fries You ain’t nothing but a King dog. I’m dyin for your fries I recommend you grab it If you are a friend of mine

The sandwiches at this place are great! I love the chicken teriyaki sandwich! Their gyro sandwich is really great too and has lots of flavor. Instead of just putting dry gyro meat on a pita they seer the meat on the grill with a special homemade au jus. It really gives the meat a great flavor that I have never tasted with other gyro sandwiches. What I also like about this place is they are very friendly and enjoy talking about their food, they even offer customers samples. That’s how I fell in love with the gyros. :) The only thing is… and I do really love this place… I feel like their side dishes could use some work. Their fries aren’t bad, but I think they are just ok. And their breaded mushrooms were not that great. The breading was just falling off in clumps and I couldn’t even finish them. But, besides that, this place has really great sandwiches and I truly recommend everyone to try them.

The hot dogs are very good but everything else is blah and nothing special. If you ask them not to burn the fries, they won’t — that’s a good thing.

The fries here are theeee bomb. Battered and fried… unlike the limpy fries everywhere else around here gives you. The food’s all fried and delicious… not healthy, but who’s counting calories? So far I’ve tried the gyros, hot dogs, chicken strips and the shrimp which were all pretty tasty. It’s a clean little place, the people are friendly and the food is good. You can see everything/the kitchen from the counter. I don’t like mystery kitchens so this makes me happy. Not really a dine-in kind of place, but there are spots to sit.
