Hunan East Restaurant

Excellent sashimi. Very fresh and cold with a great selection. As good as the sashimi at Tachibana’s which is a high bar to reach. Daughter had the Mongolian beef which was also very good. We are definitely adding it to our list of go to places for a good meal.

This used to be my go to place for classic Chinese delivery but, sadly, the last two times I’ve ordered (period of a couple months), the food tastes totally different… and not at all in a good way. The first bad experience I thought it might be a fluke, but both the classic sesame chicken and almond chicken were completely inedible. I won’t make the same mistake three times so on to find another go to in the Reston/​Herndon area…

We were in the area and decided to do a test run (a Tuesday at about 4:30). Good thing it was only a test. Ordered Scallion Pancakes, Fried Won-​Tons (with meat inside), and Summer Rolls.
Scallion Pancakes — fried for too long in too much oil at too low a temperature, so they were burnt and completely soaked through with oil — completely inedible.
Fried Won-​Tons — also fried too long, so very crunchy and dried out. They might be good, but hard to tell as served.
Summer Rolls — 2 each, with two tiny shrimp, lettuce and vermicelli. Uninspired, not much flavor, not a happy summer.
Will not return.

Amazing atmosphere and very clean. Food is delicious and staff is very nice. They actually put meat in their hot and sour soup. Most places have stopped doing that.

I am definitely not a vegetarian but i was pleasantly surprised with how delicious the General Tsos Surprise! I will definitely be ordering this again!

Love this place, Staff is very friendly, the manager, owner, and delivery people are top-​notch. The food is hot and freshly prepared when I order it for delivery. Generous portions so the delivery person definitely gets 20% tip of the bill. Hey, great food, great delivery, how can you go wrong. Can’t ask more from a Chinese delivery place! Great apps and entrees. Have ordered from here a ton. They are always very polite on the phone and very timely. Food also never tastes as those it has been sitting too long in a car. GREAT PLACE.

Woohoo! Finally a decent Chinese place in Herndon. The customer service was fantastic — both the person who took my order and the delivery driver. The food was better than most run-​of-​the-​mill delivery Chinese. The spring rolls were average, the combination Lo Mein was good and a large portion (although the noodles were slightly overcooked and it only had three shrimp), but the General Tso’s chicken was AMAZING. Great amount of flavor and spice without leaving a weird taste in your mouth. Will definitely be ordering from here again.

The food is always freshly prepared. The portions are generous and the chef uses only premium cuts of meats. I never worry about eating inferior or second-​rate food when dining here.
The sushi bar is also very good and the fish is fresh and delicious. Staff is very friendly and attentive to the customers’ needs. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever dined at.

Simply amazing Chinese food! The atmosphere is friendly and the staff are always a delight! The puu puu platter (spring rolls, spare ribs, crab rangoons, fried pork wontons) is delicious and I love how they serve it in the traditional monkey wood platter with the mini flaming habachi grill! As a girl who loves tiki kitsch, I appreciate the little details! (They have tiki drinks too!) The shrimp fried rice, Hunan Shrimp, and string beans are top notch and my husband loves their General Tso’s Chicken and Hunan Beef! There is also a sushi bar which always seems to have a nice crowd but I haven’t sampled any yet. Bottom line, the food is divine, the wait and hostess are super friendly, and the portions are super generous! I will be back again and again!

Great food and great customer service! They have a variety of options on their menu and everything is tastt! Their staff is also very friendly and they have great recommendations for what to order when you ask (I’ve been back numerous times to get the meals they’ve recommended).

I landed here as I had purchased a groupon for this place. Though the groupon said it is lunch for two, the hotel manager was kind enough to let me alone have food for dinner. I had a plan to have food for that day’s dinner and and the next day’s lunch. I ordered shrimp fried rice spicy, and yes it was exactly what I had thought of! Perfect level of spices and taste. Then I ordered Penang curry with tofu, which unfortunately had a lot of turmeric taste in it. I am really allergic to turmeric in excess amounts and hence requested the waiter to change my order to shrimp garlic curry with rice. He smilingly did that for me. The garlic curry was also to the expectations of what is needed at an authentic Hunan restaurant.
Moderate prices, clean décor, very pleasant seating if we sit outside in summer season! Perfect laid back dinner place. I am sure going to visit again.
Tip: the groupon really seems to be worth it as well, as it will lower your costs more.

Best damn sushi West of Tysons Corner. Great cocktails too, they do not cheat you on the booze!

I had ordered from here a few times in the past. It looks like they are cutting costs and corners now, which is showing in their food quality. I ordered hot and sour soup, it was the blandest soup i ever had. Pretty sure they just added hot water to the soup to increase the quantity, actually thinking that I wouldn’t be able to tell that it is diluted.
Here comes the bad service to earn it the worst Unilocal rating.
When I called and complained to the manager he told me that there was nothing wrong with it and it tasted fine. Then challenged me by saying that I should bring the soup back to the restaurant so that he can taste it. I also mentioned that I had eaten there in the past, to which I was told «well let me look up your history then». I don’t really appreciate the manager of all people being a smart A with me, the customer.
Will never be eating here again, nor will any of my family or friends. It’s now that much more worth it to go the extra distance for better food and treatment.

Solid location. We like to explore the specialties or as my husband puts it the extremes of a chef and yet when husband query was told he had none in particular but they had a basic menu. It’s a solid location. Been here many a time as its a neighborhood location.
Appreciate that they have a nice dining room with free wifi. We tend to do dinner here and mid week the dining room is about half full with a brisk take out happening.
Finally tried their sushi. Nice eel roll with asparagus, avocado, and masago. The sauce was on the sweet side. The wasabi Tobiko was truly infused with wasabi… So caution here… It truly packs a punch.
Tonight had sizzling beef. Nice version of tender beef with onions, mushrooms, in a brown gravy. In the past we have also enjoyed their shrimp curry,
4 stars as it is a solid American Chinese style location.

This place USED to be our go-​to Chinese delivery spot. The food is great, probably the best tasting delivery in the area (we’ve tried many.) The food is probably 4 stars.
Today however, we learned that we can’t trust their business practices when it comes to health safety. When they delivered our order, the driver dropped off someone else’s Sushi order too by accident. I called the manager to let them know about the mistake and they said Thanks and hung up. We threw away the extra order. About thirty minutes later the delivery driver showed up asking for the food back. I called back and they told me they trust that I didn’t mess with the other customer’s food and they’d like to still deliver it. I asked if that was against health regulations because you can’t even reuse a plate at a buffet, but they didn’t seem to care. If I were that second customer I would have never known my food made a pit-​stop in someone else ‘s home, and that’s why I probably won’t order from them again.
UPDATE: Lowered to 1 star, my wife got food poisoning from last night’s delivery from Hunan East. Definitely won’t be ordering again.

I go here at least once per week since I work at the eye doctor nearby. I’ve always ordered through their Japanese menu and I love everything I’ve tried. From the spicy tuna salad, sashimi salad, seaweed salad and their sushi, its always fresh, tasteful and on point presentation. I haven’t tried the Chinese or Thai menu yet tho.
Their servers are quick and friendly. And I love that they have WiFi

I liked this place, I really did. Their food is delicious, the staff is friendly, they have a fair delivery radius, and their prices are extremely reasonable.
It took months of painstaking harping nagging and nitpicking to get everyone on the ‘lets try a new delivery place. that doesnt suck’ train. I had already tried them a few times via pick-​up, and felt solid in my convictions. Hunan East won the top chinese place for the 20 171 area hands down.
So why the low rating?
My pick ups were flawless.
The first delivery; after finally convincing the family that new was a better experience than crap, was timely, accurate and delicious.
Then there was tonight. After waiting an hour and calling to check on the order we were assured our dinner was on its way, in a polite and apologetic manner. No harm no foul. Its Friday, youre backed up and thats understandable.
BUT
If I am starving, and wait more than an hour for food, and when it finally arrives only ¹⁄₃^rd is warm; while the rest has gone cold and congealed… I’m already eating crow with the family who would have gladly eaten mediocre takeout that would have arrived in 15 minutes.
PISH POSH, its here and it will be delectable, so eat up my loved ones.
And eat up they did,
down to the bottom of the the little boxes…
where a little lovely greasy hair was found hanging with the fried rice.
I assume it was a busy night and they were rushed and that I’ve not carelessly ingested their hair prior to this evening.
That being said the rest of the food was thrown out and I know there is no convincing the family to give them another try.
Sigh, they really were tasty and had tonight’s events happened on separate occasions it would have been easier to excuse, but to wait so long for hairy food…
