Strategies For Conscious Change

This review is only based on my 2 month experience with Nina Perales, Therapist.
Nina explains DBT well and I initially felt very comfortable with her due to her sense of compassion, her knowledge and experience. After three weeks of group, I spoke to her about including participants the option to share our experiences more relative with the material to better understand what we were learning. Positively and thankfully, she started that.
I came across an emergency financial situation after two months. I explained to Nina my situation of being unable to continue my third month due to unexpected financial restraints. She listened and asked me if I can reevaluate my budget, which took me aback because my budget matters are personal. Then she said she wanted to encourage me to think about this more b/​c of my commitment I made, which I explained that unexpected life events happened and does not reflect my commitment to myself. She then mentioned that in addition to the commitment, this is a business. That comment turned me completely off. A business it is, definitely understandable. What shut me off was the main two things that should have been brought up about commitment were to myself (which she did) AND to the group, which she did not bring up at all b/​c that was not her main concern. The main concern is clearly stated here. Myself and her business (money). I called her about these concerns and thankfully she listened and explained her reasons, which I was just glad she and I spoke about the concerns. Nina had me sign a release form so she can communicate with my other therapist. After a couple weeks, I asked Nina if she contacted my other therapist yet and she said no because she has been busy.
In addition to all of this and in retrospect, I did not like how people came in and out of the group and how the process allowed new people to come in during current group member’s 3 month session. I felt reluctant to share when a new person was introduced.
I found someone else who I feel much more comfortable with and who practices in Henderson! Very happy to have found her and her style suits me better.
