Excellent food, questionable neighborhood. We saw great reviews for this place so we visited tonight. The food was great, the waitress was friendly, and we didn’t get mugged! I probably won’t bring my family back but I’d defiantly go back.

Never would have found this place if I had not seen it on Unilocal.Thank you Unilocal. This place proves that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Very plain appearance inside & out & located in a not so nice part of town. Once inside the service was fast & friendly. The menu has a large variety of items to choose from. The food was prepared from scratch in an open kitchen. Portions were large & satisfying. I have been back several times & will continue to be a loyal customer. If you want GOOD authentic Mexican food in this area this is the place.

I returned to Henderson on business yesterday and could not wait for lunch so I could bring my business partner to enjoy the food here. The food is prepared to order and is pretty well as authentic as it gets. The menu is based on Guadalupe’s mother’s time tested recipes. On this occasion I ordered three Sopes with steak and my business partner ordered the steak burrito. No disappointment here as the food was delivered promptly and was delicious. The place is owner operated with pride and respect for quality and service. I noticed a previous review with comments on the number of Sopes on their order. The menu has an example photo showing five Sopes on a platter; however, each order is based on the number requested. I am not sure when I will have the opportunity to return but my mouth is watering just thinking about my next meal there.

Stumbled upon this little place on our long drive from Atl to dc and would highly recommend it. Atmosphere was basic bit clean, and the food was wonderful! Totally worth the extra 4 miles off i86, and it was fun to see something of the local area.

Ok don’t get me wrong I like this place… but number one why aren’t their prices on the menu and nunber two it’s way over priced for the let’s say ambience. The other day they shortchanged me two of the five sopes and still got charged the same price?!

I come from a place where there are taquerias on every corner… Living out here makes me miss authentic, gritty tacos like it’s no ones business! I’ve had tacos in California, Nevada and Jalisco, MX. Anyways, this place is as good as it gets around here. Kind of pricey on some things. Cost me $ 6 for a cup of salsa to go and almost $ 12 for a shrimp coctel. The coctel was hella good though, lots of juicy big shrimp. Tacos are also on point. Service was good and they had a bunch of knick knacks that made me miss home. Got the kiddos a couple of paletas at $ 2 each. I say GO!

I found an awesome tiny little restaurant today. Very descriptive name too. They literally do everything from scratch, for rolling the tortillas to chopping the salsa. The folks that run it are very nice and patient with folks that don’t speak Spanish, though I was in the minority of customers in this aspect. I will return!

We tried the HMR for the first time based on the positive reviews posted here. The food was excellent. The manager was very friendly and spoke excellent English. We tend to eat early, so we were the only customers in the restaurant at 5:30. They serve Coke products and a variety of American and Mexican beers. No margaritas. We paid cash so don’t know if they accept credit cards. The air conditioner was not working well, so it was a little warm in the restaurant. The manager said they are having it repaired or replaced when the repairman comes. The menu is unique with dishes not found in the usual Mexican restaurants. I had the chicken enchiladas verdes which were excellent. My wife had the steak burrito which she liked. Salsas are spicey as they should be. We will definitely go again.

if you are going to this restaurant looking for the ambiance your at the wrong spot if you are here for the food you have reached the right destination. I started eating at this restaurant a few months ago and I am now spoiled and refuse to step foot into any other Mexican restaurant. The food is made right then and there there is no warming up your food in a salamander broiler so you have the impression that it was just cooked for you great food and very friendly ladies working here. portions are large and filling.

I’ll admit it was a little scary looking from the outside, and we were the only«gringos» there, but EVERYONE was nice to us and the food was FANTASTIC. It’s a little out of our way, but I will definately travel up there to eat again!!!

Remarkable Ceviche Tostadas!!! Also good Cabeza tacos. Friendly authentic Mexican food. They always have at least one person on staff who speaks english. Again, I cannot stress the ceviche tostadas enough. If you like Los Comales in Durham, this is a good substitute. They don’t have a salsa bar and the tacos aren’t quite to the level of Los Comales, but the ceviche makes up for it.

My wife recently spent two weeks in Henderson visiting family & friends. That’s a long time and she got pretty bored with the salad bar at TGI Friday’s(one of the few gluten free options around) so, as my wife tends to do often, she decided to venture out. Asking around she was led to Henderson Mexican Restaurant based on several recommendations. Now, being from Austin TX(at least for the past 15 years, by way of Richmond VA) we think we know good Mexican food when we taste it… the truth is, my wife enjoyed her meal at HMR quite a lot and suggested we go together next time we were in town. Lo & behold, a couple of months later we returned together along with our almost three year old daughter. As soon as we made it to town my wife«carried» us down across the tracks to HMR. Gravel parking lot, cinderblock building, bars on the windows, faded sign in the colors of the Mexican flag… inside was part bodega, complete with a variety of interesting trinkets for sale, part old diner with a worn counter and small stools fixed to the cracked linoleum, and part family room with grandmother and her daughter quietly attending to their guests while the mother’s three young children entertained themselves at a table in the back between drawing with crayons and watching Sabado Gigante on the small TV. This place is the real deal. I felt more like I was in Mexico than even somewhere in Texas; we were amazed to learn HMR has been operating in Henderson at this former hot dog grill for 14 years! A true family run place… the mother takes the orders then went to the open kitchen with the grandmother to prepare the meals, the older of the children even got into it by answering the phone which oddly seemed to ring frequently. We started with chips & pico de gallo which was literally prepared at that moment — on the other side of the counter in the kitchen the mother chopped fresh tomatoes, onion, avocado, and cilantro and squeezed a generous amount of fresh lime over the salsa, while the grandmother deep fried a big batch of their in-house made corn tortillas in a large pot of oil on the stove. This was also served with a nicely spicy tomatillo salsa and a less spicy but quite rich red salsa. For the meal, my wife ordered the tacos al pastor — tender pork, crisp white onion, fresh cilantro. My daughter got a ham & cheese sort-of-quesadilla — basically a ham & cheese sandwich with lettuce & tomato between two flour tortillas, flat not a wrap and served cold(we’d probably pass on that next time). My mother-in-law & I both ordered the chicken enchiladas verde — five plump corn tortillas wrapped around shredded chicken topped with a tangy tomatillo sauce and sprinkled with salty cotija cheese. For beverages my daughter had papaya nectar, wife had mango, mother-in-law had a Dos XX, and I had a couple of Bohemias to wash it all down. All-in-all a fine experience… service was great, food was very good, and the atmosphere was welcoming and enjoyable. I’m giving them a little extra nudge, up to four stars, for their perseverance. Sure, you could go to a «better» part of town, maybe to Cracker Barrel and have a meal perhaps marginally as good as Henderson Mexican Restaurant, but I prefer my down-home feel a little more authentic… plus, I’m a huge fan of Sabado Gigante and I’m pretty sure that’s not playing at the Old Country Store!

If you’re going to the Henderson Mexican Restaurant, that means you’ve ventured over the railroad tracks into the scary part of Henderson. I know, I know, you’re thinking: «But I’ve been to Henderson, and it’s all scary!». But there’s definitely a less scary part, and a more scary part, and this is in the MORE scary part. And now you’re thinking: «Why the heck would I go here now that you’ve told me this??» A valid question, indeed. So let’s discuss a hypothetical situation. Let’s say that through no fault of your own(or possibly due to bad karma… another reason to avoid hitting that squirrel that dashes out in front of your car at all costs!)…wait where was I? Oh yes, so say that one day you are just minding your own business, driving through Henderson on your way to someplace better, when your vehicle is beset by a pack of feral pit bulls and they puncture your tires, rendering you immobilized. You’d probably be trapped in your car for awhile, until they got bored with you and decided to move on to easier prey. Hours, perhaps. Maybe days. Anyway, by the time the coast is finally clear, you would probably be ravenous. All you’d have had to eat are stray french fries that you’ve managed to scavenge from the floorboards underneath the seats. You stumble from the car and begin wandering aimlessly through the streets, when behold! The grimy white cinderblock structure of the Henderson Mexican Restaurant appears before you! Look, I just said it was a hypothetical situation, ok? When and why you happen to find yourself in Henderson is your own business. But if you want some really authentic Mexican food and you aren’t scared, this is the place to go. And I don’t mean burritos and enchiladas and grande margaritas. I mean authentic like you better speak Spanish or have someone with you who does, because that’s all anyone there speaks(workers AND customers). Definitely an adventure, but you’ll be rewarded with good food, including homemade tortillas! Yum!
