I bet this closed because of the rude attitude of the short hair lady at the front. Who loves to mumble rude comments. The Sushi alone couldnt keep it open. Gave it a 1 stAr cause i couldnt review it without a star!

We used to be loyal patrons until we realized they raised the prices on certain items and not the quality of the food. Rays was always, in our book, considered the decent local japanese place to eat. The portions at one point matched the prices. If you’re one of those people that enjoy large portioned mediocre Japanese food then head here. It’s not a bad stop. I recommend eating at the bar — they serve you edamame, a warm moist towel to wash your hands and an single portion of rays seafood salad.

Tomadachi probably put Ray’s out of business. I used to go to Ray’s too but discovered Tomadachi across the street. 100% better than Ray’s. Ray’s Sushi was actually pretty good in the past. I used to come here with coworkers for company dinners. We would eat in the rooms with the tatamis. I’d even come here often for lunch. However, the quality of sushi diminished. Their fish wasn’t as fresh as before and the restaurant itself started to be run-down. Their menu never got updated. They hadn’t done anything to upgrade the restaurant. Sometimes the wait staff was rude. They would just shove the plates on your table and walk away. The only waiter that was super nice was the older gentleman. He was always running around filling our tea cups and being super attentive. I miss that waiter more than I miss Ray’s itself.

Rays is the best! I drove past here the other day and it’s gone. Poof!!! No one does justice to a titanic roll like Rays. (tear — I need a hug)

Rating based on sushi alone, this place rocks. That said I wouldn’t come here to eat a California Roll or Chicken Teriyaki. Not only are the cuts of fish extremely fresh, they are also very generous in terms of portion. The sushi rice is extremely important to me, and I feel like this place always seasons it really well. Not too much vinegar or sugar. The nigiri is also really well constructed. They never use the tail ends of the fish when you order nigiri, and the rice never falls apart, which is a plus. The sushi here not only tastes delicious, but looks the part as well. Same goes for the sashimi; the portions and cuts are great for the price. PROTIP: The uni here was really good on the three occasions I’ve had it. Same with the ikura. If you want both value and portions, order the chirashi bowl. Sad thing is, Ray’s is on the way out due to high rent. :(

Sad to see this place close… I’ve been coming to Ray’s ever since one of my teachers/moderators from back in high school recommended it to me. Even with the numerous sushi establishments in the area, my friends and I always kept Ray’s Sushi as an option because they were just that good. They had some of the best tasting and generously portioned tempura I’ve had in the east bay. Rolls ranged from pretty decent to amazing. Huge pieces of sashimi(fresh too). Unfortunately, the miso was a bit watered-down but they’re tempura banana and fried ice-cream was pretty solid. All good things come to an end I suppose… If you’re in the area today and feel like eating Japanese food, try Ray’s.

Sushi & Sake. can’t go wrong with that! We’ve gone here a couple of times and both times, we really enjoyed ourselves. Although it was always really packed, we were seated right away with menus. Service is good here and one of the waitresses(who recognized us) took good care of us. The sushi is decent here — not the best, but decent. There’s tons to choose from! We usually take our time and pick at the leftovers while finishing up our hot sake. At one point, we were the last ones there.

I had been here several times with my family in the past. About a month ago, a friend suggested we go here as a post-birthday dinner for her and another friend. I was indifferent. I wasn’t jumping up for joy, but I wasn’t totally against it either. When I arrived, my friend was already sitting there. We were waiting for our two others. I had the vibe that the servers didn’t like that because they’d walk by and glare over at us. Since everyone drove separately, we all arrived at different times. We decided to order while waiting for last person to show up because the servers kept coming by to ask us if we were ready. We ordered for her so that when she arrived, everything would be ready. Being allergic to seafood, going to a sushi place wouldn’t be my first choice. However, if for a special occasion, I don’t mind. While screening through the menu, I noticed they had chicken teriyaki sushi and vegetarian sushi, which was a plus. It was great to see something that I wasn’t allergic to. I narrowed it down to two choices, either the Chicken Teriyaki dinner or Sukiyaki. I choose Sukiyaki. The presentation of the dish was nice. The Sukiyaki looked appealing. However that was misleading. The broth was a bit salty and there wasn’t a lot of vermacelli. The chicken was pretty good, but the size was kind of large and chuncky. There was a lot of vegetables and other ingredients, such as carrots and cabbage. The carrots appeared to be frozen and reheated. Towards the bottom, I could taste the excess soy sauce. The rest of the party seemed to enjoy their dishes and have a good time. Despite the dish not being as good as I had anticipated, I still enjoyed the night due to nice company. I’d head to Ray’s Sushi if another suggested it for a birthday event or gathering. This however would not be my first choice.

Don’t be scared off by the exterior of Ray’s. No it’s not a dive bar. It’s a Sushi joint and a pretty damned good one at that. The hostess here is super cute and friendly. I like that they bring out the edamame and tea without having to request it. This should be as standard as chips and salsa at a Mexican place. It gets a bit busy during lunch but the Chefs here knock things out pretty quickly. My co-worker’s bento box came out in the time it took to bring out the miso soup. I believe«lickety-split» would be the proper term to describe the speed of things around here, at least during lunch time. I appreciate that they offer a a vegetarian sushi combo for lunch. I think it varies on which rolls they offer as I’ve been here twice and got different rolls both times. The one constant is a piece of Inari is always included. It comes with miso soup but I didn’t inquire whether or not it was vegetarian and chose not to eat it. I sure wish I knew? They also offer plenty of vegetarian rolls if you want to pick and choose individually. This time the Maki with avocado and eggplant hit the spot. Although it was a wee bit large for my dainty mouth to accommodate in one bite… Since I’m not the best with chopsticks, I prefer smaller rolls so I can stab ‘n grab before the thing falls apart on me. The piece with pickled toppings of unknown origin looked great but it’s flavor didn’t match it’s visual appeal. The other roll was a standard veg offering of cucumber and avocado. Everything is pleasantly presented here. Not always the case when you opt for a Vegan roll at a Japanese restaurant. Prices are pretty reasonable especially for the lunch combos. Any Sushi house that serves up more than a few good Veg offerings and takes the time to present it well is A-OK in my book!

Giving one star for the big portion of fish they serve; they do give you a big piece of fish for any sushi or sashimi order, the one they put on the sushi seems even bigger. Giving another star for their Sushi Chefs service at the sushi bar, they even had to handle the service that the waitresses were supposed to handle because the waitresses were way too busy running around. Taking one star off because the hostesses were very mean and rude, didn’t welcome us when we walked in, we had to go to the counter and asked for help, didn’t smile and didn’t let me to pick our seat at the sushi bar although there were no body seating there when we arrived. Taking another star off because we didn’t get anyone served us except the chefs the entire time; we even had to ask the Chef for more hot tea. Is it THAT busy? NO! All the waitresses just seemed to avoid eye contacts with you when they walked by. Taking one more star off because we were disappointed for the entire visit; we drove all the way from San Jose wanted to enjoy this place but all we received were the mean faces from the hostess.

Due to a very well deserved food come after visiting Ray’s Sushi last night, I was unable to attempt to review the sushi bar. A group of friends and I converged at Ray’s Sushi, which is a little bit further than I’d like to go for a dinner. Nevertheless, I do like sushi and Japanese food and was more than game for trying a new restaurant. The establishment was bustling busy on this particular Friday night, which was for good reason. Our particular party was a bit bigger than most and thus we were treated to one of their private rooms, which ask you to remove your shoes before stepping in. I particular liked the unique setting, as you don’t get such treats like that in the Easy Bay. As I looked over the menus, they had a Sushi Specials Menu and a regular Dinner Menu. The menu is extensive to say the least and has lunch entrees, lunch specials, bento boxes, dinner entrees, dinner combos, appetizers, specials, and sushi rolls. The menu is exhaustive and took me about ten minutes to come to a decision on what I’d like to order. I finally decided on the(Grilled) Chicken Teriyaki dinner entrée, which is served with soup, salad, and rice. I also ordered a California Roll for only $ 4.75. My party ordered all kinds of other items and plenty of sake and beer and I did get to try all kinds of items. My California Roll came out first and it was good enough that I finished it all to myself. Up next came the soup and salad, which were good, but nothing standout. My chicken teriyaki came soon after and it looked delicious(and healthy). I threw my bowl of rice on top of the entrée and went at it. The chicken was flavorful, juicy, and went great with my sticky rice and soup. I also got a chance to try the California Crispy Roll, which was delicious and would love to order when given the opportunity. I also finally got a chance to try some fresh oysters, which I’d been dying to try for years. It was different, but I liked it and will be ordering again. I have to admit all the food was delicious and there was nothing I didn’t like. I was stuffed beyond belief but wanted to keep eating. I didn’t get a chance to try the sake bombs, but I’m assuming everyone enjoyed them because they kept ordering rounds. The only reasons I am not giving Ray’s Sushi five stars is because service was not as great as it could of been. It took about 20 minutes just to order a water and a diet coke. You would assume that a big party, spending quite a bit of dough would get attentive service, but that wasn’t the case. Nevertheless, my dining experience merits four stars at the very minimum. The bill for a party of 10 was in the $ 400 range, but a large portion of that could be attributed to the sake and other specialty items. Luckily for me, my food and coke came out to less than $ 20. Ambiance: 3 Stars(out of 5) Food: 4 Stars(out of 5) Service: 2 Stars(out of 5) Price: $$ Overall: 4 Stars(out of 5)

I woke up after taking a Nap after work. I was craving Japanese food. So I rolled my Weekend Whip to Rays. I rolled in and opted to sit at the Sushi Bar. I was presented with a Menu, Edamame, Hot Green Tea and a Complimentary Seaweed Fish Salad, which was quite yummy. I perused the Menu and noticed Rays is more of a Roll type place than a Nigri or Sashimi type place. I asked if they had Toro my favorite and they didn’t have it. So I went with the Oakland A’s Roll and a Redwood Roll . I was presented with my Redwood Roll 5 minutes later it was quite tasty . 10 Minutes later my Oakland A’s Roll appeared and it was real good. That was a Superstar roll. The Sushi Chefs there were quite entertaining . Plus They take Discover Card. If I’m in a Roll Mood I’ll stop by Rays again.

If you’re really hungry and craving Japanese food, Ray’s definitely hits the spot. Their portions are extremely generous, their prices are very fair, and the food is rather decent. This isn’t a fine dining Japanese restaurant, just a casual sushi restaurant with very fresh fish and ginormous fusion rolls. I would not recommend their beef sashimi/beef tartare(it’s hot pot meat on a plate).

Okay so I have been here several times. The food is pretty good. I love the lion king roll! Ray’s has the best lion king roll! My friends love the sashimi. We went for lunch on Wednesday, and we were there at 11:25, they don’t open until 11:30 and there was a line at the door waiting for them to open, that is always a good sign. The customer service however, sucks! The girls that work here are very rude for the most part. There are two particular ones who argue and fight at the pay counter all the time. They tend to forget about your table, so if you ordered a water or soda, good luck getting it. You have to constantly call them and remind them. They never come and«check» on you. I will give this place 5 stars when their customer service improves. That is the sad thing about popular businesses, the waitstaff can treat the customers bad because they know that they will still be busy. I would actually give this place only 3 stars because of the horrible customer service, but this past Wednesday, we had a man wait on us and he was pretty good. Also, the BEST employee there is this older Hispanic man, he is always so friendly and will bring you anything you ask and fast. I always wish i could just give him my tip.

I was really impressed by the rolls here! I came here with fellow Unilocaler Sophia L, and she introduced me to the titanic roll! Although I didn’t order this, it looked soooo good and ginormous with huge chunks of sashimi piled on top and a crazy array of yummy sauces drizzled around the plate. :)

LARGE portions and not too expensive with pretty good quality sushi. The service, however, was lacking. It took a long time for the rolls to come out and towards the end of our meal, they rushed us to leave. Double salmon roll– Good for salmon lovers Grilled tuna steak– Yum. Seared tuna with pesto. Very fusiony, and a different take on sashimi Under the sea– Simple sushi with fat pieces of raw fish on top Dragon roll– Classic roll that never fails me… it was huge! Seaweed salad– sweeter than I expected Beef sashimi– looks very raw but doesn’t taste like much Titanic Roll– Ginormous… especially with the towering pieces of crab that topped the roll All the rolls were very tasty and filling. Even though the service was lacking, I’d still come back.

I aboslutely adore this place. The rolls can be a little on the pricey side but the fish is the BESTQUALITY you will find. Personally, I would suggest ordering the 49 roll and the TITANICROLL! I guarantee you, the titanic roll is the biggest roll you have ever seen. Haha Enjoy!

My new local go-to spot for sushi! Chirashi — best deal I’ve seen yet, TWELVE slices of sashimi and great variety with sake, maguro, saba, hamachi, shirauo, and suzuki. Tornado Roll– creative roll with tempura fried white fish on the inside and seafood salad on top, pretty tasty and fills you up nicely for just $ 10. Alaska Roll — generous cuts of sake and not dinky/sloppy like many other places. The price point and quality of Ray’s is easily the best one will find in the SL/Hayward area. Though the sashimi isn’t the freshest I’ve had, it’s still very solid and the portions/price more than offset it. The interior’s also spacious and I was impressed with the table sizes — much bigger than I’m used to and you don’t feel cramped at all. To sum it up, Ray’s clowns on Tomodachi and all other places within a 5 mi radius, but doesn’t quite stack up to the likes of Yojimbo and Angel Fish.
