This is the only Mexican restaurant I eat in Harrisonburg, the food is consistent each time time you go, they have some of the best refried beans I have eaten. the lunch specials are good along what else is on the menu, having tried most of their menu items, I have my favorites.

Awesome Mexican restaurant ! We had the shrimp tacos. They were served warm and delicious. The tacos had a salsa on the side that we thought was a bit on the bland side. We had a side of chile rellanos very tasty smoky chipolte taste. Prices are reasonable. Service is good. Highly recommend this place.

Ate here last weekend. Food was good good good, but just not enough food for the price. We paid 70+ bucks(including tip) for a group of four and had absolutely nothing left to bring home for leftovers. I was a bit surprised about that…

I’ve been going to El Charro for most of my life and I have never been disappointed. The food is very good. Especially the combos. The cheese quest is good but not like normal quest. It’s made with Goats milk, which is something most people don’t realize so they get disappointed when it’s more of a liquid. The service is very good. And it’s a pretty decent price.

I enjoyed their service and the food was okay. I ordered a chimichanga and it wasn’t bad but, it wasn’t my favorite. I truly enjoyed the choriqueso!

Food was so-so, not bad, but not really good either. Chips were stale, salsa was bland. Service was pretty good. Price was more than reasonable. Biggest complaint is that any resemblance between what we had here and real Mexican or Tex-Mex(they’re very different) is purely coincidental and unintentional. For instance the tamales(?) were covered with some kind of orange sauce that I didn’t recognize. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t Mexican either. We wouldn’t go back.

Well-worth 10 min out of our way heading South on I-81 near Harrisonburg. The food was hot, fresh, and so tasty and satisfying on a chilly night. We will be back. The Chile Relleno was expertly crafted and had perfect light breaking, savory cheese and poblano covered in a light, fragrant heavenly tomato sauce. The service was also warm and courteous.

friendly place for the whole family. The cheese dip is delicious. Service is also very top notch. Everyone is friendly and if you go there often they started to remember your drinks and what you like.

I just went there first time. The food was so so. Any how i had to pay 11.8%tax. Is it right? i’ve never pay that much food tax before… i even ask when i pay if that’s correct?! He said yes! Ugh! i have no idea if its wrong or right…

Just the way I remember it(from 10 years ago). Kind of like a ChiChi’s… good Tex-Mex /Mexican. Lots of cheese. Good flavors on the meats. 22oz draft beers :) Good value. Very family friendly. My wife and I split the combo meal for two and got to try a nice variety of dishes.

This place has good food at a reasonable price. This is my favorite place in town for Mexican food. The only downside is that I want to sit and eat chips and salsa all day long at this place.

My vegetarian quesadilla was great! I have always had a hit or miss experience with vegetarian dishes at Mexican restaurants so I was so happy that my order was wonderful! Their salsa is awful though. Seriously, it shouldn’t even be called salsa. There was nothing fresh about it. Skip the salsa. Stay for the quesadilla!

My wife and I were passing through the area on our way to Boston; and as we often do, we looked for a Mexican restaurant. This place did not disappoint! The queso was great, and the drinks were pretty cheap. We were both very pleased with the food, an the service was equally as good. I would definitely recommend this place.

There are two problem with El Charro. 1) The food is just so-so. I’ve had much better Mexican elsewhere but no in Harrisonburg. 2) The food is inconsistent. As an example, the salsa is sometimes thick; sometimes runny. Sometimes it’s a little spicy and other times is very bland. Most of their menu items are like that. Also, there is little variance of flavor. They use the same mean in a taco, burrito and enchilada. I believe this makes your dinning experience bland overall. Don Pablos is much better. Unfortunately, none of them are around here.

This place was decent and the prices were adequate for it. The chips were a bit stale and flavorless and the salsa was a bit watered down. The service was nice but the waiter spoke pretty quietly– hard to hear. I thought the chimichangas was nice and crunchy but served with clumpy, bland fried rice on the side.

Just a great little Mexican restaurant. Some might say its not«authentic» for one reason or another, but if you want a lot of food, chips, good drink prices, and friendly service then this is a no brainer.

I’m not sure of the other reviews here but we ate here during JMU orientation based on the decent ranking by Unilocalers. Needless to say I was very disappointed. The salsa was not good at all and it did not taste fresh. When I got my meal that included a chile relleno, the chile was very rubbery and the cheese was on top of the chile versus inside. There was really no preparation of the chile at all. Sorry El Charro, methinks not!

I love mexican food but this place is right next to TacoBell and I wish I went there instead.

I used to eat here quite often as a James Madison University(JMU from here on out) student. All 3 locations are good, though the best one is the one I’m writing about here. I always ordered the Burrito Charro(shrimp and chicken with some tomato and rice and beans). For the price I always paid, it was a fantastic meal. Plus the chips and salsa are quite the deal as well. They take FLEX(for all you non-JMU students out there reading this, it’s like your debit account from JMU that you can use at off-campus restaurants and shops), and the staff is super friendly. Plus they have really good drink specials too! The only downer I heard is that it hasn’t been that good recently, but I’m going by my 3.5 years spent at JMU, and during that time I never had any problems there.

El Charro’s is undoubtedly the fastest, fairest, Mexican restaurant around. Exactly the type of gem you’d expect to find in a college town. The décor is tasteful, the staff(although always changing) is delightful, and the food is completely delicious. Everything has cheese on it, but this place won’t make you gassy like cheap Mexican food. Good quality at a great price. My parents and I were driving past Harrisonburg on our way south. We needed a quick bite and I remember El Charro’s. Even after two years it’s the same. Tortilla chips and salsa arrive at the table as you sit and drinks not long after. I always get the enchiladas supremas. If I’m not hungry I get three soft beef tacos. We had a dog in the car; in less than 45 min we were back on the road. Unless you order something crazy you’ll be in and out in less than half an hour for lunch. I guess this is more of a check in than a new review. But the other review is for the sister restaurant, so all is fair.
