The staff here is super friendly, and the outdoor seating area is lovely. Serving size is quite generous. I had the lemon custard and black raspberry ice creams. The lemon was fantastic, flavorful and creamy. This was a special. The black raspberry was very muted in flavor and unimpressive. I’ve had better at many other ice cream places in the state.

Best ice cream in the greater new haven area. All homemade, and all delicious. My favorite is the vanilla blueberry, which is most excellent. Definitely won’t disappoint!!!

Last summer we came here and was disappointed. Came back today to give it another try and again was disappointed. There was 9 employees and total chaos. There was 5 of us together and we felt like we were an inconvenience. We were rushed and kept getting asked if we needed anything else as others in the group were still deciding(just a bit rude). Asked for lids as we were taking it to go. Some of us ended up with correct lids and bags as others of us ended up with a lid handed to us that was an incorrect size and no bag. Which goes back to the issue of being rushed because we obviously were an inconvenience. I know high school/college kids are cheap labor but I would suggest maybe adding a mature adult to the mix to keep things in order a little better. Your employees customer service skills are lacking which causes people to not want to return. First impression walking in the door is chaos and rude employees is not good for your business!

This place is awesome. I went here a couple of months ago when it was very cold outside. The place looks like a house and there is a large yard with a gazebo and picnic table. Great place to just sit and relax. The inside is cute as well. There is a room off the area where you get your ice cream that people can sit at. Ice cream is definitely on the pricey side, but it is well worth it to me. I had black raspberry and it had a good flavor to it. I’ve had some where there was hardly any black raspberry taste to it. I found it creamy and not too sweet either. I cannot wait to go back when it gets warmer so I can sit outside and not freeze.

The place to go for homemade ice cream at its best in Connecticut. Quality ingredients. Incrdible seasonal flavors. All ice cream is made on premises.

Very rich and delicious ice cream and service with a smile. What more can you ask for? I don’t get to say this often, but try the«pothole».

I stopped by here after spending the afternoon at Sleeping Giant. I got a teeny cup of reese’s peanut butter cup. The ice cream is ok and not best I have ever had, it is not the most flavorful and mine was freezer burn like the reviewer Paul A said it was for him. If you are in the area and want really good ice cream go to Sweet Claude’s in Cheshire.

Ah so good. Ice cream always tastes fresh. Nothing unique flavorwise but still delicious and lots of indoor seating and lovely outdoor seating. Grounds are very beautiful.

We stopped here after a recommendation that they had great homemade ice cream. And they do! No pets inside, but the pretty outdoor area is fine to sit and have a cone with your furry friend. It’s a pretty area and the ice cream is great! They have fun flavors and great waffle cones too.

Fantastic place! Went after a hike at Sleeping Giant. High quality ice cream, some interesting favors and the classics. My bf got an ice cream sandwich with pistachio which he loved, I got the cookie dough with peanut butter sauce which was phenomenal! Gorgeous yard with benches and gazebo to enjoy a gorgeous summer day. Will have to make part of our Sleeping Giant adventures in the future.

I love Wentworth’s. I definitely think they make the best ice cream in the area(sorry Ashley’s). They’ve got excellent flavor options, their ice cream always tastes fresh, and their sundae toppings are delicious. They also have a great outdoor area to sit and enjoy your ice cream. They even have K-9 crunch for the dogs. Note that they are closed on Sundays… for what it’s worth. A great place to go after a hike at Sleeping Giant. Definitely worth a try and repeated visits.

Not only is there ice cream some of the very best around(and by a New Englander’s standpoint, that’s pretty awesome), but their friendly, smiling faces are also a treat!

The ice cream is rich and the scoops are generous. There are several sizes tiny, kids, one scoop, two scoops and three scoops. There are several toppings and milkshakes are offered. I had the butter crunch with caramel and I can only say WOW! If I could give the ice cream more than 5 stars I totally would!!!

There are 3 Ice Creams to me. Over processed, store bought or ice cream parlor style. I can find no difference between DQ or Sonic, Edys to Breyers, or Wentworths and all the other adorable tasty treat shops. Great stop after a day hiking or picnicking at Sleeping Giant, or if looking for a refreshing diary treat on a warm Summer night. I find many of the reviews here to be based off nostalgia, which if great because you know people come back year after year something is done right. Wentworths biggest issue is the setup. Inside when you walk in you walk straight the counter and off to your left is a decent sized room for seating. About 10 guests can fit inside before staff is yelling at you to wait outside because the air conditioner is on. It’s bizarre because you really have no way aside from opening said door to know if there’s room to enter. They should knock down the wall, open the space up so more people can fit, or perhaps offer a window ordering spot? Overall we stop here about once a year, and appreciate the tiny cups they offer — it’s exactly what you would expect an ice cream shoppe like this to be.

This«Victorian-era house with a gazebo and seating area in the spacious back yard» near QU was pretty disappointing. Tried toasted almond and mounds but was not impressed, so went with a chocolate mousse shake for the road — not as indulgent or satisfying as it should’ve been. Despite the mediocrity, I suppose everything’s put in perspective if you’re stuck at Quinnipiac and this seems like a better option than Whitney Donut. If we were in a pinch in the area for some odd reason, might return for«Black Velvet(a dark chocolate confection that tastes exactly like a fudgsicle)» and«K-9 Crunch(vanilla with bits of kibble mixed in)».

Yum. Yum yum yum. The ice cream: rich and flavorful. The sundae toppings: sweet and delicious. The setting: comfortable and welcoming. Those outdoor benches and gazebo make a lovely place to eat ice cream on a summer evening, and you’ve got to love the play area for the kids. You can create a sundae of your own, but I have to give a shout-out to those who created their special sundae offerings. They share my tastes. I just want to eat my way through the menu. Yum!

Here’s the thing about me and ice cream. I like it. A LOT. So much that I can’t keep it in the house, because I would likely not eat anything but ice cream. You can bet then that I want to try as much of it as I can before committing to a cone when I go to a new ice cream shop. Wentworth was kind enough to indulge in indecisiveness and allow me to try multiple samples of their ice cream before I chose one. I had a buttered pecan, maple walnut, and rum raisin, but not in that order(I think I actually had them in reverse, but whatever). Rum Raisin ended up being the winner. It had just the right balance of sweetness and tang from the rum flavor that I decided it could be my flavor of the evening. I ate it quickly, telling my friend that I was afraid it would melt, but let’s be real. .. I just really liked it a lot and needed an excuse for why I was being such a glutton. If you decide that a trip to Wentworth is in the cards for you, it’s not too hard to find. Take Whitney Avenue up through Hamden to get here. It’s a white house that sits on the right side of the road, and even has a gazebo to make the grounds even more enticing(as if I needed anything more than just the enticement of ice cream — but I digress!) There’s ample parking right in front, and my friend and I had no trouble finding a spot once we got there. It’s a little bit of a hike from any of the Havens, but it’s worth the trouble!

Closed Sundays… Very tasty ice cream. Lot’s of flavors and homemade yummy! They have an awesome backyard area with a gazebo and play area for the children out back as well as inside the store. Kind of pricey but once you taste it I would say it is very much worth it. The waffle cones were the biggest I have ever seen. They fill them pretty full so if you are getting 2 or 3 scoops you should be prepared for the amount of sugar rush you will be getting. They have awesome looking ice cream cakes with a variety of ice cream flavors. People were waiting in line to buy them and we were there about 7PM in the evening on a weekend and there were very few left. Not sure if they only have so many per day or had just not restocked the freezer yet. Adequate parking in the private parking lot. A little dicey pulling out of the driveway as some cars drive pretty quick on that road so make sure you are really paying attention to the road and not consuming that yummy decadent ice cream. Plenty of staff for an ice cream parlor which is nice as often times these types of establishments are under staffed but not Wentworth’s. Staff were asking you want you would like before you had time to read the menu and there were plenty of people already being waited on. I will definitely go back and try another flavor when in the area.

Over the last few years I have been traveling around eastern CT attempting to actually find the best ice cream on this side of the state. I come from a family devoted to Rich Farm’s ice cream and, while it would have been easy for me to just say that is the best, it turned out not to be. So, I saw Wentworth’s on my way to another ice cream shop and noticed it had high marks on Unilocal and was well-loved by locals so I stopped in to try both the chocolate and vanilla flavors and to get a sense of the ice cream. I am afraid to say that this is not very good ice cream. I know this place is popular so I think it will be fine even with this one 3-star review. I also totally get that people are partial to the ice cream they grew up with or that which is in the area they live, but this isn’t even close to the best ice cream in the state. The people working here were really nice and respectful and I had no problem with the look of this rather large edifice on a major road in Hamden. However, the actual ice cream had a flat, kind of off taste and in the picture below you can clearly see there is freezer burn on it. The chocolate was also really lacking in flavor. Yes, the portions are big, but with ice cream like this that is not necessarily a good thing. If this is your favorite ice cream spot, don’t sweat it. Definitely keep coming here. But if you are a Unilocaler reading this simply to find the best ice cream in the state I would either head just a mile up the road to an amazing place called Sweet Claude’s or to Milford, CT to a place called Walnut Beach Creamery(or of course Rich Farms if you don’t mind massive lines).

Do yourself a favor and skip the DQ in favor of this place. Wentworth is a clean and surprisingly roomy establishment in Hamden. In addition to a number of specials, this place has a large selection of ice creams, all homemade! I got the chocolate single scoop and it was delicious! Super creamy and with high butterfat content. Be warned: the single scoop is humongous, so consider the kid’s scoop if you want to skip the ice cream coma.
