The Bakery: I ordered a full sheet cake, yellow cake, whipped cream frosting, decorated with pink roses, over the phone. The cake was extremely fresh and decorated with an artistic spray of roses, very beautiful. Only $ 50 and it was perfection!

I remember this Big Y back in the 80s and 90s. Imagine: Where Big Y and Stapes are now, it was one relatively small Big Y flanked by a large Ames.(Oh…Ames…how I miss you!) With the turnover of businesses and renovations made in that shopping plaza over the past few years, Big Y has obviously reaped the benefits. On a long weekend in Connecticut while visiting my parents, I went next door to Guido’s to pick up a few things, yet I didn’t want to pay and arm and a leg for some ice cream and blueberries, so off to Big Y I went to buy the rest of my haul. DAMN. This place is a behemoth! Far gone are small aisles and dim florescent lights to what is, easily, a 50,000 square foot grocery paradise. They now have an in-store wine and liquor section that is absolutely larger than my NYC apartment! The aisles are wide, the fixtures are sleek, and any shopper can find anything they need. I use very little hyperbole here. The Super Stop & Shop in my hometown pales in comparison; I may have to make the 15 minute drive up here from now on! How I wish I still had my Big Y card from college. I miss using the gold and silver coins! Ha! Note, and a damn useful one at that: Bring your own bags, or you’ll be using paper bags. They no longer use plastic bags. I did not know that, and carrying out two paper bags in wet snow was an adventure, wondering if I’d make it from the entrance and back to my mother’s car with both bags still in tact. I did, but it was a close call. *phew*

Probably a bit biased as I worked here on weekends for three months a while ago, but I love Big Y. Shopped there before I worked there and still shopped there after I quit. Amazing customer service and a brilliant place to work. The staff is always on hand to help and the managers are brilliant. The store has such a large variety, which is why I love it over Price Chopper. It has pretty much anything you want groceries wise. The pizza is great as well as the fish bar. They even have a organic section which I think is great as you don’t have to go to two separate stores as I know sometimes I would do. The bakery area is amazing as well. Their fresh bread, try it!

Big Y is just a much better version of nearly every supermarket you’ve ever shopped. Take Whole Foods(way more expensive), Wegman’s(best of all worlds), and Trader Joes(specialized) out of the equation, and you’re left with a super pleasant supermarket with great service and a broader than average food selection. Highlights are the seafood and meat counters, which, on some cuts/varieties, give Guido’s(right next door) a run for its money. The produce area is just massive and they always seem to be restocking(a good thing). The fresh bread and baked goods area(hang a right as soon as you walk in) has too many yummy offerings to list and the deli counter(in the same area) moves super fast so you rarely need to wait to be served Put simply, it’s a pleasure to shop at the Big Y.

Everytime we drive up to see our family in Syracuse, we always stop at this Big Y to pic up some fresh stromboli or grinders. Seriously, as with most of the world, I have honestly underestimated super market food just from terrible past experiences which have left me and my bowel dehydrated! The stromboli are made fresh and so are the grinders! The prices are awesome(both less than $ 5 and if you buy a foot long grinder sometimes you get a free bottle of water!). You could get an even better price if you use a gold or silver coin! Everything in the store is always so organized, I love it! They really do make a HUGE effort to keep things looking in tip top shape, and it shows! We can’t wait to try another awesome stromboli next time!

I’ve been coming here, with my mom, since before I could walk(also with my dad, but less often). There are few stores more intertwined with my childhood than this Big Y. I loved coming here(I still do); they had(might still have) a ‘Cookie Club’, where any child could(can?) go to the bakery to get a free cookie. Great food options, good deals. Back in the day there was a bathroom that most people didn’t know about(I’m not sure it was ‘open’ to the public); my dad would always take me back there to use the facilities. As small-bladdered men, we always like to have access to the facilities. A few years ago the store underwent massive improvements. It is much larger and more ‘modern’. I still love coming here, although since I don’t live in Sheffield it isn’t very frequent. This is a great place to buy your groceries.

I am wild about the Big Y market and would almost move to Great Barrington just to live nearby. Roughly 2 years ago they redid the market, creating an out door market feel… the most pristine fruits and veggies, cheeses and meats, in a updated setting. The bathrooms are almost like those in a restaurant or catering hall. Great pizza area, fountain soda and take out sushi, lobster rolls and fresh seafood. Prices are great. But the best part is the coin slot machine game at the end of one order per day… you get a chance to win a gold or silver coin… yipee !!! Clean, well stocked. Also a great cake section and plants, flowers and outdoor potted plants at incredible prices. Can you tell how much I love The Big Y?..

Your typical grocery store in your oh-so-typical small town America. The perk? Discount Six Flags New England tickets/passes. Go Big Y! Oh yeah, and get the discount card, it rocks!
