Pete’s Pizza & Tap House

I recently phoned in an order at lunch time for TWO slices of pepperoni. In the past when going to Pete’s I’ve ordered whole pizzas, so this day I was surprised. I wish that the girl who took my phone order would have told me that a Pete’s slice is essentially half of a medium pizza. When I picked up my order I was handed 2 paper plates covered in foil that were realistically if combined a medium pizza, mind you this is lunch for one at a cost of almost $ 13. No drink, no sides. (I guess that should have tipped me off in the first place) It was lunch time and I was hungry. Being that I had to walk back to work trying to navigate my way holding too flimsy paper plates with overhanging pizza covered in foil I was more than irritated. Not only do I wish I had been made aware of portion size, but when I picked it up it was so much pizza it should have been placed in a box which would have been much easier to carry. With a little bit of inquiry on the order-​takers part I could have just ordered only one slice and been more pleased. That said, I’ve read some other reviews which draw attention to lack of consistency and I have to say on this particular occasion I agree. Sadly this time the pizza was mediocre at best. I might have just let it go had the pizza been as good as it has been in the past even given my irritation. I like the staff at Pete’s and always support local when I can. I’m not done with Pete’s…only anoid. Three stars based on this visit. Hopefully giving a 5 in the future.

Seriously awesome pizza. Great flavor and combinations of ingredients with a well baked pizza, balanced nicely. But the Old Rasputin on nitro tap, holy crap. Yums. I finished my beer before my pop and the server brought me over a free quarter pint of Rasputin while saying, «Sucks to have an empty beer.» That was really cool. Great service. Great place. Great food and drinks… Great time. Highly recommend.

I will give the new location at least 2 stars for a nice family dining atmosphere; however this review is about the pizza. We ordered the special of the evening. The pizza with arugula, prosciutto, pine nuts and Parmesan shavings, at the advice of the host. It was TERRIBLE, DRY, and TASTELESS!!! It had no olive oil, or any tomato or other sauce on the crust. Worst pizza I ever ate at Pete’s, and it added up to $ 23.00 for two slices, and 1 beer. I would say that is highway robbery. I used to frequent the Pete’s in Nevada City. The pizza was very good there and I was never disappointed. Where did the Chef go wrong? I will continue to support Pizzaoilo in Colfax. They know how to make authentic pizza and at half the price. I know there are a lot of growers in Grass Valley who can afford this, but working people can’t. Unhappy patron and her Fiancé. #We want a refund!!!

Great place to go for drinks and pizza very affordable. I favor the smoke jumper, the summer special is also delicious. Huge slices Italian style crust, so delicious!

Excellent food, beer and staff. Super clean and great environment! A+ all the way! I recommend the margharita pizza! They were also quick with the order.

I don’t know how to rate this exactly. I think their pizza tastes great. Their garlic bread is out of this world. The wait can be somewhat long but if I go pick it up and its not ready at the expected time they said, they will give us free beverages on the house. However, the quality is hit or miss. Sometimes the pizza is top notch like perfect temp, cheesy etc but other times the crust is burnt, you can tell its been sitting there for a longgg time, they forget toppings (so now I always double check when leaving), it’s cold or not cooked all the way through OR it takes forever to be ready even longer than the allotted time frame they gave me and I am talking like 30 minutes over that or even longer…
The location is great. I live on the other side of this street so its a close drive and the people who work there are fantastic and so nice even when things are messed up!
But I find the hit or miss quality of the pizza annoying. I want to know I am getting a good pizza every-​time and not feel disappointed when I get it home and need to warm it up more or its burnt on the bottom. Therefore I am giving this 3 stars… because getting it the same every-​time is a big deal. I am actually getting this for dinner tonight… I am already worried it won’t be top notch & crossing my fingers its one of the good ones since I am so hungry so that is why I can’t rate higher… Too much doubt.
That being said, their pizza is 100 times better than fast food pizza like dominos, round table etc I would always choose Pete’s over a pizza chain but I would like the same quality every-​time. I don’t think that is too much to ask especially for the price.

Overpriced, service is mediocre, you get nickel and dimed for everything. Don’t bother coming here if you can’t tolerate gluten. You are limited to a small pizza if you are, and you have to pay the price for a medium. Twelve fifty with no toppings for something you could get at Pieology or Blaze for eight bucks with all the toppings you want. Way to drive off customers, guys! Bravo! Tasty enough, but just too damn expensive. Probably won’t come back.

Great joint… awesome food and friendly staff. Solid beer selection… and Pete, the owner, is a really nice guy!

What a great spot! The food is all super solid, if you’re not sure what pie to get, try giant slices of several, all delish. Wings whether hot or bbq are killer and salads are great too. Beer selection is righteous, 16 on tap (!) plus (yes, there’s more) another grip of large format bottles to enjoy on site or (hell yes) take one to go. Service is FANTASTIC! Thank you Thomas, Jasmine and Ashley you took care of us, and by us I mean, my wife, two of our kids (5 & 7 yo boys) and myself. They were very engaging and both Thomas and Jasmine noticed what beer we had and suggested something else that we might enjoy, we did.
Short story: Hell yes!

Decent pizza however the service was mediocre. They didn’t get our order right and didn’t offer to fix it then they wanted to charge us for Ranch.

New location is AMAZING! We always have great service! Yummy pizza and the best salads!

The pizza slices are HUGE. They’re not kidding when they say monster slice. Delicious crust and ingredients. The best selection is pretty good too.

Went on probably their busiest evening during the day after Thanksgiving street fair. Great food, great people serving the crazy croud. Glad we stopped there.

I really like the pizza for the most part… the vibe is cool and I really enjoy coming here.
The only thing I just don’t get is the beer prices. It’s $ 8 for an IPA from Tap it and $ 6 from Lagunitas. Having worked in the beer world for a while I know how much kegs cost and this is a rip off. It seems to me like the owner is taking advantage of there being somewhat limited pubs and breweries in the foothills. That being said, distributer prices aren’t more steep than say Humboldt where I lived previously. Also, staying local with the beer selection is unfortunately the downfall… the beer selection really isn’t that high in quality. There are more options at Pete’s than other places but they are pretty common beers, easy to find, have drank them many times and again way to expensive for what they are. I think a good beer consultant would be helpful to this place, that and get real about what you’re serving, its worth, and branch out a bit, there are so many wonderful beers out there!

Went there with the family before seeing a late night movie at Del Oro, had a great experience, food is really good, staff super friendly, cooks genuinely cared about how there food was coming out.
Spoke with owner about how pleased we were with everything. Definitely a place that we will continue to come back to.

In my experience since the move if not just shortly before the move something changed. Can’t put my finger on it. If it’s less sauce dryer dough new cheese or what it may be. Just know the last 6 times I’ve gotten a slice I was not at all happy with myself for going back. I work a block from petes and unfortunately it’s the only affordable place near me. I wish we had more choices in downtown Grass valley. If you forget your homemade lunch you can go broke trying to feed yourself. It’s a shame that I don’t enjoy petes anymore. I swore by it for over 5 years. Now I just go hungry until I get home. Like I am now.

Food is great tho service is ridiculously poor. Went in person ordered a pizza, came back for it 20 min later when it woulda been done, asked a person to check for it, 20 min go by without any sort of follow up I ask again, nothing. Got to the point where another 10 min go by and still nothing I went back to ask and my slice had been in the oven the whole time and they couldn’t figure it out. Been in there multiple times and at they’re old location that are so rude! Customer service concepts awfully skewed really ruins it for me. The pizza is so tasty but unless the employees get an attitude adjustment I don’t see me wanting to go in there.

My partner and I just moved to the area and we are so glad we found this place! The beer selection is great and they have pizza by the slice. And, it’s delicious. Relaxed, casual vibe. Love our experience and we will be back.

Best pizza I have had in NC so far. They also had Firestone 805 on tap, so that is pretty awesome to have my home town beer in my new home ;)

The place is average. Not bad, not good, just average. The new atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable to hang out a while, but the pizza is nothing special and every time I’ve ever been the wait has been ridiculous for a slice of pizza. But they do have a good selection of food and drink and although it’s not cheap the slices are large.

I think this is one of the best pizza by the slice places I have been too. The monster slices are very reasonably priced and delicious. The wings are pretty good, I get mine with the sauce on the side because they tend to get a bit soggy other wise. I think a quick run in the oven after the saucing could fix that. The only reason I did not give it four stars is the fact that the prices on the salads are so high… kind of a bummer sometimes when you wanna feel healthy while splurging on some yummy pizza. Overall, I always recommend this place anytime someone asks for a bite to eat in town.

We love Pete’s! The service is always great and the food is fabulous. We have been here 3 times in the last 3 weeks. I crave the calzone and would eat it every day if I could. I recommend getting the spinach salad too. They have great beers on tap as well as cider and an awesome root beer. I can’t wait to go back!

Great menu with a number of different gourmet pizza’s to choose from. The décor is very cool and clean. We ordered a caesar salad which was fresh and a true homemade caesar dressing with delicious croutons.
The beer selection was outstanding. We ordered the «chub» and the #8 IPA.
We ordered the chicken, garlic, goat cheese, artichoke pizza. Phenomenal! The crust was cooked to perfection.
The only reason why I didn’t give a 5 is because there is no wait service and you have to order at the counter. The staff are very cool and were helpful.
I will definitely be back!

When I crave pizza I crave Pete’s pizza! Everything on their menu is wonderful, but I have my favs. Try the Conamara, the goat cheese makes this pizza so freakin good, I have dreams about it and the Smoke Jumper, oh man, such a delicious combination of tart-​sweet-​creamy-​spicyness makes my taste buds sing. Don’t forget to grab a local beer… or two… Or why not a whole pitcher. Stop in frequently to try their new beers on tap!

I think this place is great! The new location especially. Great beers on tap, excellent pizza by the giant slice. Haven’t tried any of the other food yet because the pizza so good but I’m determined to. My husband says the wings were pretty decent (he’s a wing snob from Buffalo.) Always good service.

Best pizza and customer service in town. Not to mention a great beer selection and atmosphere.

Outstanding. Great hangout with tons of great, fresh local beers on tap, absolutely delicious pizza, Americana rock on the air, very friendly staff and reasonable prices. Comfortable, spacious seating, nice street view, local historic décor and Mexican Coca-​Cola. Don’t expect table service, but the staff will bring your order to your table. On your bicycle? No problem, just walk it in and lean it on the wall. You’ll have a good time and enjoy the pizza and beer. It’s a local favorite, especially after their recent move to the heart of downtown.
