Yummy Sushi! Always good for a sweet date night! Seaweed salad & Lucy roll is my favorite! :)

It was late and I was checking out their menu on the street looking in seeing them take an order. All I wanted was some sashimi to go. The hostess saw me walking in and I wasn’t sure where to go because the check in is in the back. The hostess started walking towards me and then I walked towards the back and she walked away from me and went to the podium. As I arrive to ask about getting some sashimi to go she said the kitchen was closed and asked me to leave. I guess the business didn’t want to make easy money cutting a few pieces of fish up. I will not return with that horrible customer service experience. I wonder if I would have been treated the same if I was a man.

The staff are rude and I am unsure how this place manages to stay open with their awful service and overly priced sushi. It won’t take long for this sushi restaurant to close if someone realizes this town needs another sushi place. I am local and I drive to Nevada city for sushi. Save yourself time and your money and go somewhere else. This place is awful on all levels.

Food was great! but what brought us there tonight was the birthday discount that they offer. We spent $ 100 on dinner, with the birthday discount that offers $ 50. They only discounted us a $ 14 Roll telling us that we did not spend our money on the right stuff to get the birthday discount, even though we clarified all that with our waitress before we ordered. The waitress couldnt really explain the reasoning behind this discrepancy. While the food was good, the ethics are sneaky. We will never be back… for a birthday deal ;) Such a scam!

My boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner, I had never been and I’m so we glad this is where we chose to eat. The service was wonderful and so was the food. I ordered the sashimi and tempura combination plate, when our food arrived there had been a mix up and I got tempura battered prawns, instead of taking the food back and having me sit there and watch my boyfriend eat as they made what I had actually ordered, they told me to enjoy the plate in front of me on the house and my food would be out shortly. I felt so bad about the mix up because I know what it’s like to be in that position, but the the hostess, our waitress and one of the chefs were so curtious and polite. I would recommend this amazing restaurant to everyone. Job well done!

Bali Hai is an outstanding roll. I can’t say enough about the friendly and we’ll paced service. I live by the coast but find Kaido ’ s sushi to be some of the best I’ve had. It’s a must eat during my frequent visits to the Grass Valley area

Food is great, service is SLOOOOOWWWWW. I’m not joking, you are going to spend two hours ATLEAST if you want to eat here. If you have an entire evening to kill it is worth it, but don’t expect to be able to make it anywhere else.

I’m new to grass Valley and really really wanted to find a good sushi restaurant here. This place is just okay, the service is so so, we waited quite a while for several of our dishes and the sushi was okay but not great. Everyone that work here was likable and nice and the ambience was okay too but it is pricey and for the price, both the food and service speed should be better. Their specialty rolls seemed better than the usual rolls like the Rainbow roll which wasn’t bad but pretty average. I’ll keep looking for now!

I received my birthday post card for a free meal so we decided to go. I think last time we went it was because of the card. We were greeted, then seated right away and our drink order taken. Then we ordered an appetizer, Poke, and that was very good. Then we ordered dinner. My free dinner was Tempura and it was good. All our service was attentive, timely, and the food was good. As time went on the place got pretty busy so perhaps it is best to go early. The place is a bit dingy but that may be a function of the old downtown building it is in. Parking in the downtown is also difficult. In all, I’m going back.

This is by far my favorite restaurant in this area! The tempura is equal to the best I’ve had in Tokyo. The fish is super fresh and the presentation first class. Menu selection extensive and very imaginative. Wonderful sake list, albeit pricey, try the sake sampler. Be sure to watch the owner in the kitchen, like a Food Channel presentation. Check out their website: Be sure to make a reservation.

What a pleasant surprise! I generally like to give establishments more than one chance and Kaido proved to be a good choice! Upon seeking a last-minute sushi meal on a Wednesday, we decided to try Kaido again and were very pleased! The wait staff was great but more importantly, the quality of the fish was AMAZING! Incredibly fresh and cut well – a little too thick but was easy to overlook due to quality. The only other bad thing was we ordered quail egg shooters and were served a wretched concoction of egg and hot liquor(in one glass) – pretty bad. However, it was overall a great experience.(And rolls were delicious as well!)

We went here for an early dinner while spending the day in Grass Valley. We love sushi, go often to places in Sac. This place was horrid. The fish is clearly frozen and was overdressed with mystery sauces to hide the bad fish. For the price you’d expect better. The staff was slow, chatted with each other mainly and didn’t care about how our experience was. Horrible food.

I have only ever had sushi here, and it has always been 5 stars! However, the service is pretty poor. Not only do they take forever(which can be forgiven if the food is good) but they seem to just not give me or my party much attention every time I go. It’s a little disappointing to say the least especially considering the amount of money I’ve spent there each time and the amount of times I’ve been in. This used to be my favorite place to take out-of-town house guests, but after several of them complained about the poor service, I will be taking friends somewhere else to make sure they have a fun visit. Until I have a better experience here, I think I’ll just stick to the sushi from Raley’s, which is sadly much worse. :(

Thus is a tough one to write, cause I feel the quality of their sushi is 4 stars — but their total disregard for timely service, both in the restaurant and for to-go orders, is atrocious. Me: Hello, I would like to place a to-go order for two Specialty rolls and 4 orders of Unagi nigiri Kaido: Ok, let me check with the chef to see how long it will be (3 or 4 minutes goes by) Kaido: That will be 1 hour and 15 minutes Me: Ok, I will see you in one hour and 15 min I arrive right on time and am told that it would be another 30 minutes more I look around the restaurant and it well less than half full(maybe 12 people in their total) and they have three people in the kitchen making food. Wth?! Sushi is Japanese fast food for God’s sake. Absolutely bizarre Yes, I already knew about their slow service and long delays for to-go orders, but I have finally had it I have eaten at Kaido at least 20 times. In the last 5 years. Again, sushi quality and presentation is very good — 4 stars consistently The service is hands down cumulatively the worst I have ever experienced at any sushi restaurant ever. I don’t blame the wait staff, but the blame falls squarely with the owner/management Going to Kaido? Get a seating reservation for 5pm, or whenever they open that given evening, and give yourselves plenty of extra time for a drawn out meal. .. Tip: order all your items as soon as they take your initial drink order And Good luck!

The place is beautiful. And every bit of the food — we had sashimi and grilled salmon — was delicious. I might have been able to rave about the dessert, too, had the waiter been competent. At about 8:15 on a Wednesday, with the place about half full, the officious young woman waiting on us came over to say«last call.» If there was anything else we’d like, she said in a hurry, we should order now. We were in mid-meal. I thought about it for a minute, and asked her whether she meant that the kitchen was closing. Yes, that’s what she meant. This came after other lapses. The first was when we had to ask her to bring us the drinks we’d ordered. She had been bussing tables and doing other stuff that should have waited. I eat in restaurants often in the Bay Area, and I’ve seldom seen such poor, indifferent service.

We’ve eaten here at least a dozen times and never had anything less than stellar food or great service. Can highly recommend: Poke and Mayo Miso appetizers, Hamachi Kama, many of the special rolls(favs — Bridgeport, Pink Cadillac, Mill Street, Godzilla), chocolate mochi ice cream, sake sampler. Atmosphere: Very clean, simple, nice tablecloths, hardwood floors. The place is not large and that’s nice too. Bathrooms are tiny but cute and super clean(always a good sign and much appreciated). Price: On the expensive side. Plan to spend $ 80. for two if you are ordering full dinner with appetizers, sushi, sake, dessert. For a splurge it’s worth the money. Service: We’ve almost always had excellent, very attentive service here. Not sure what happened with the one reviewer who said they were snooty, and we have NEVER gotten any attitude from anyone here. The Japanese owners seem wonderful. A few of the servers are a little quiet, so maybe that could be misinterpreted as snooty. We’ve found everyone to be very sweet here. We’ll go back many times! p. s. I almost never give a restaurant 5 stars, but I think this one deserves it for total overall experience

Ventured back here on Labor Day weekend. Was pleased we were able to get a table reservation at the last minute. The food was delicious as usual, and the wait staff was extremely helpful. They noted half our party was vegetarian and cautioned us about the Teriyaki sauce. At first I was saddened to hear their sauce was cooked with chicken, as it was the perfect topping for the Forest Roll. Luckily, I ordered the roll without the sauce anyways, and it was still awesome. Crispy tempura style mushrooms wrapped in rice, topped with avocado and walnuts. It was lovely. Besides that, our party ordered the Rockabilly Roll from the special menu(Check out my photos). Which I couldn’t eat as it had eel, but it looked amazing. Kaido definitely has presentation down pat. We also got the usual Twiggy roll and then the vegetable tempura. The onion, carrot and sweet potato are my favorite. I could probably go without the tofu and mushrooms. We also had hot sake with our meal, which was pleasing. That night they even offered samples of their poke, which our friends found to be very tasty. Anyhow, just wanted to say, keep up the good work! Thanks Kaidos!!!
