The place is clean and the service was excellent. I liked the miso soup and white rice but that is where the fun stops. I ordered the Katsu chicken(breaded and fried white meat chicken, per the menu) and it was basically inedible. The chicken was so bad, most likely a real tough thigh meat as it was white and brown with fatty tissue all over. The breading on the outside was good but the chicken inside was very low quality. A few pieces were basically rubber and I could not even bite through the chicken. I ended up spitting several bites of the chicken in to my napkin and hiding it away in my coat pocket, I know, gross, but I didn’t want to leave it on the plate and be questioned by the waitress if I liked it or not. Just wasn’t in the mood to complain about a $ 12 dollar chicken dinner at that point. Bottom line is I paid $ 15 with tip for a cup of rice, a half cup of miso soup, and inedible chicken Katsu(I still tip because the waitress was really nice and it was not her fault) The chicken Katsu would actually be really good if they used a quality meat like a nice tender chicken breast. I’d be willing to pay a bit more for quality. As it stands, I won’t be going back unless they improve their food quality.

Enjoyed a great dinner here. These guys apparently bottle their own teriyaki sauce, it’s thick and delicious. I had spicy BBQ chicken /tempura combo. Miso soup was good, salad with a ginger vinaigrette was light and tasty. The chicken had good flavor, but I could have liked more heat… The tempura was amazing. Fresh, light and crispy perfection here. Service was also great. Special kudos for having Fat tire A bit on the spendy side in my opinion.

You should try this restaurant. The food is excellent. Service is top notch. I come here every time I travel to Grants Pass. You will not be disappointed. They do weekend specials that I usually go for as I like to try new things.

One of my favorite go-to places in Grants Pass. The teriyaki chicken is a must for first timers — it really is so consistently good. I tried their crispy mahi mahi for the first time recently, & I never order fish — it was divine! Their tarter sauce is the best — I actually order it all the time to mix with my rice haha! The only reason I’m giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is mostly due to the steady rise in pricing over the years, while the portion size shrinks. I understand it’s just economics, but I say — pick one, not both. Truly, I give them 4.5 stars, nearly perfect. I love that their dinner portions come with a fresh, leafy salad, soup & an always perfectly prepared cup of sticky rice. I don’t know that I have ever left really disappointed. The owner is just about the nicest guy you’ll ever meet & the service is typically friendly & prompt. I’m always happy to support this place & I sincerely hope it is doing well(seems to be) & will be around for another 20 years!

This has and always will be my most favorite restaurant in Grants Pass! There’s just something about the miso soup with the crunchy, salty cabbage that is unlike anything else.

This is my comfort food. I have grown up eating here so that’s almost 30 years of amazing Japanese food. Teriyaki chicken is an easy recommendation. I love their kim chi too. Get a combination plate and try it all. A great family place run by a great family. Thanks for all the memories Matsukaze Crew!

Chicken Teriyaki is the best I have ever had!!! I also had a couple of sushi rolls they were good too. I was not impressed with the variety of sushi offered, but that was fine because of the amazing chicken!

Great meal and even better service. Met my mother there for lunch with my husband and 2 teenagers. We were seated quickly and waters were brought right away. And then just as quickly hot green tea. Our waitress was very attentive and my husbands water glass was never empty for long. Miso soup was fantastic, love the cabbage they give you on the side for it. I ordered spicy chicken and tempura combo. Chicken was moist and just spicy enough. My husband ordered the snapper nitsuke style and he said it was delicious. We will definitely be going back.

Matsukaze is the best restaurant in Grants Pass. From the marinades to the sauces and the quality of their meat, you can find amazing, authentic flavors and something to satisfy everyone’s taste. Each dish hits the spot! The ingredients used are fresh and delicious. Really, each bite leaves me wanting more!

I have tried everything on the menu and each time I go it is a difficult decision because everything is superb. Especially good is the ribeye: cut thin and just the right amount of teriyaki. Also well done is the tempura. Yum yum! The service is excellent and the staff is small so they have taken the time to get to know me and my wife which makes it even more enjoyable.

The teriyaki chicken is my fave! This place has decent food but i wouldn’t recommend coming here specifically for sushi cuz their options are limited and it’s not fresh. The service is hit or miss. I’ve had great servers as well as bad but nothing too terrible to the point where i will not return. Their hours are a little weird so don’t come in the middle of the day cuz they may not be open. try going on lunch and dinner hours.

Was looking for a place to take our vendor to as he was requesting seafood. The place looked nice, definitely somewhere appropriate to go for a business-related occasion. The inside is nice and clean, they even have those traditional Japanese seatings(no, you won’t have to kneel unless you wanted to) section. Now, the food was great, and so I’m only giving a 3-star because it’s not really a traditional Japanese food place. And yes, the sushi selection… well, there’s not a selection. So if you’re looking to order rolls or sashimi, this is definitely not the place to go to. If you’re looking for a bento-style dinner, then this place has pretty good servings, but again, not the selection. I guess I would say that if you’re looking to take a date to some place nice, but not adventurous enough to try new things, this would be the best choice. Our vendor actually ordered the Mahi Mahi bento, and it was pretty good. The serving size was great, the presentation was marvelous, and service was super. Definitely made the right choice as a place to take our vendor to.

The teriyaki chicken is really good here. It tastes like the chicken is super fresh, and the sauce is to die for! The wait staff is really friendly, they are a little slow though, but I have only been there when it is busy, so that might be why.

I worked here for four and a half years and ate chicken practically every day. Yet, I still come back here for their spicy chicken and teriyaki sauce whenever I visit. I know I will get quality food from first hand experience and I typically get the same consistency of product for what I order. I don’t eat sushi, so I can’t really speak much on that besides that they use real crab for their California rolls. They don’t have a wide selection though. Also, the tempura can be great depending on who’s doing it, but I normally don’t like tempura either. So if you simply want some quality chicken and teriyaki, you can’t go wrong with Matsukaze. I’ll let you decide for yourself on the other jazz. Also, they typically hire friendly people. I can’t say I was one of those people, but they normally do good in finding nice servers/workers.

New to Grants Pass so tried them for lunch. Wanted sushi but they really didn’t have anything but a California roll. Was told they used real crab. Not sure where it was in the roll. It wasn’t good. Then ordered a lunch salad. Hand full of lettuce with thousand island dressing they call tropical. Will give them one more try.

I am a fan of their salad dressings. Personally I prefer the Ginger, but the tropics is nice also. Best bang-for-your-buck here is to do the lunch teriyaki chicken with rice and salad. Fairly inexpensive and just the right lunch portion. Not a «classy» dinner place and to out-of-towners the crowd might not be what they are accustomed to. This is not a place that I have ever, or will ever, order sushi. They are close to the water, but not close enough.

Matsukaze is a wonderful Japanese restaurant. The chicken teriyaki is incredible. They make their own sauces from scratch. The tempura shrimp and sushi is also delicious. Their original salad dressings are also excellent. Service is fast and friendly. Been going to this restaurant for years and certainly will continue!

The two stars is for the sushi. Just not much to choose from, and just so so. The other japanese food rates 3 stars… ok. I long for the old Hunan Garden sushi at the old brick location in downtown GP. Since they moved into the mall, it is not nearly as good.

Ok, I’m going Star Search style: Let me get in the mood… August 2009… Road Trip… Sun in eyes, must pull over because I’m blind… We’ve been driving non-stop from LA to see my folks in Washington… must stop… hungry…tired…La Quinta in site. Hey look over there, a Japanese restaurant in the middle of Oregon… Let’s do it! Side note — You can’t pump your own gas in Oregon. It’s weird because I was raised to take care of my own stuff and I feel real bad you know because they don’t take tips. Two and ¾ stars for the food — it tasted Japanesy — it was soyed up, it had sticky rice, it had an egg mixed in with the chicken katsu… and it satisfied. It was a Donburi… and I had a beer — an exotic beer too — it was Japanese. Look, no knocking the GP — from the looks of it on the hill by the freeway it’s well-populated and beautiful but the«Best Damn Japanese Restaurant in Oregon» I doubt — maybe off the 5 freeway. I liked the restaurant, I liked the staff, I even liked the Donburi(was looking for cold soba noodles) so much I took the rest back the the hotel and grubbed on it for the rest of the night! Now for the ¼ star. Look the ¼ star isn’t a measurement for being less than one star it’s on top of the 2 ¾ stars making the experience a total 3 stars. The ¼ star is for the cute caravan-ing Japanese group of elder peeps who were sitting across from us at the restaurant. I loved these people as much as the beer! They were regaling the owner on how they would stop at his restaurant every year on their trip up the 5 and how it was the«BESTDAMNJAPANESERESTAURANTEVER!» without a Japanese accent in the house. Not that that has anything to do with taste — but BEST… come on man you got Portland — it’s next to the Columbia, it’s a port, they have fresh fish — just saying. Don’t knock me, I liked the place so much on this year’s trip(I’m sounding like that cute Japanese caravan-ing group already see) we wanted to stop in — but it was closed. So we went to the BESTDAMNCHICKENTACOINOREGON — Muchas Gracias. Yeah… ok. Three Stars baby!
