Pretty much everything you’d expect in a diner: breakfast served all day. chicken fried steak-type food options. Service pretty mediocre, particularly when it comes to that important diner perk of keeping a coffee cup full.

Very nice service. My food came out a bit over cooked the first time. I had eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. The waitress was great and insisted on replacing my eggs and bacon. The second round came out quickly and was perfectly cooked. Just for going that extra distance, I would come here again.

For some reason I keep trying this place about once a year. I will now stop trying! I had a mediocre burger and fries yesterday but the worst part is they have gone to a cutesy private label ketchup that tastes just awful. I’m done trying.

We were very disapointed with our visit to the Black Bear yesterday. Normally the food is great as is the service. We had a great waitress and the asst. manager got our table ready for us. Both great gals. The waitress came and took our order right away and then we waited and waited and waited for our food. When it finally came my father’s fish and chips was dry. I ordered the Asian chicken salad, the chicken was burnt, dry and tough, the cabbage didn’t even have much flavor.

On a road trip and decided to stop in Grants Pass for lunch. We’ve never been to one of these diners before. Pretty good food, although someone in the next booth was complaining about the service. Then waiter had brought her the wrong entrée twice…

Great service! Stopped in after filling up at the gas station and being told that this is the best place for dinner. I can’t say anything about anything else in town but I’m glad we went. Excellent service and amazing pricing! Everything is locally sourced from the northwest and they provide a great ambience! When we pulled up I thought this place is really nice it’s going to do some damage to the pocket book. When in fact it isn’t much more then Denny’s down the street. There is a nice little walking area along the river with little critter statues and everything is carved or etched beautiful. Defiantly will make this a regular stop in on our way from Washington!

Good food. Mediocre service. I decided to go here on a whim, just to try some place new. I was seated immediately which is always nice but they tryed taking my order before I even had a chance to get to my table, let alone sit down. I ordered a coffee and it was served right away but i asked for another minute to look over the menu for my food selection. I didn’t see my my waitress again. Another waitor finally stopped at my table about 10 minutes later and apologized. I had been handed off to him and heforgot about me… After that though, everything was very good. Just enough staff attention and really good food. I had a western burger and fries.
Needed another napkin though… Ha

Black Bear Diner is a nice place for a good homestyle meal, but I can’t say much for the service. Portions are huge, food is flavorful, but we’ve had poor service from the waitstaff that lessens the quality of the experience. Having to wait 20 – 30 min to order, blatantly being ignored by your waitress, while she waits every table around you and needing to ask the manager for your food nearly an hour after ordering is not my idea of great service. That being said though, management is nice and pick up the slack when they notice an issue. If you’re hungry for homestyle food it could be worth the wait.

Hands down this is one of the best black bear diners I’ve been to.
I’m surprised it has such low ratings! I came here with my boyfriend & nephews yesterday, he ordered «The Grizz», which came with 2 pancakes, ham, sausage, eggs, bacon & a choice of hash browns or country potatoes (he got country potatoes), all for ~$ 13 which was a lot of food!!! He loved his dish! I didn’t get a chance to try it because I was too busy working on mine.
I ordered the California bacon Benedict & oh my goodness it is so delicious!!! It too also came with a lot of food! I even to-go half of my portion to finish for later.
Hands down one of the best black bear diner.
Only complaint I have is that our server wasn’t the best or attentive. I asked him for a straw twice & never got it. I also had toddlers with me & we hardly got refills our drinks until the very end.

We ate there with 9 people. Me and my uncle ordered something called JOe’s Hobo Omellete or soemthing, and Oh my god. The thing was so huge. It was fantastic. I couldn’t believe the portions. Also, all the waitresses were way cute.
I“m telling you, this is the place for breakfast. Holy shit! Everyone is hella friendly, the food is awesome. The waitresses are hella cute. Stop in, if you’re into good ass food, huge fuckin plates, and gorgeous waitresses, holy fuck!!!

Awesome. Tried it for the first time tonight and we really enjoyed it. I had the cheeseburger salad and my wife had the Parmesan chicken. We finished our meal with an apple pie a la mode. Portions were generous and prices were great. Look forward to our next visit.

That is nearly some of the worst food I’ve had … On par with airplane meals.
Side salad $ 4.99: small plate of pre-packaged salad mix. The highlight was ranch dressing.
Blackberry cobbler. Again canned blackberry cobbler with some cheap puff pastry laid on top of it.
Service was so so.
What keeps this place going is location and décor.
Definitely not going back — ever.

I have had breakfast at Black Bear many times and it’s always great. This was my first time having dinner here and it was less than great. They were out of soup, out of almost every dessert on the menu and I was given a fork with my ice cream because they were out of #@$&* spoons! Pot roast was more lumps of fat than meat and looked a lot like it was the leftover trimmings. Atmosphere is very Chuck E Cheese with unsupervised children running around everywhere and screaming.
Black Bear will be a breakfast only spot for me from now on.

Wow! The pancakes are huge and actually have great TASTE! The coffee is good, beautiful décor, spacious and they have great music playing too.

First off, let me say I like Black Bear Diners. I ate at one last week. But recently I stopped In Grants pass while driving through. I was famished and happy to see the diner.
I walked in and waited for the lady to finish taking care of a customers bill. They were in a conversation… That went on and on… And on… I waited. She looked at me a few times but never acknowledged my presence. The customer did too but pulled her further away and kept talking. I finally turned and left.
Just thought the manager may want to know… Unless she was the manager.

So when in Grants Pass you have some pretty great options, like the Taprock and The Station. But we chose to skip those and hit the comfort food king, Black Bear.
They decorations are eye catching. How many things can be made in the likeness of a bear? And the chainsaw carvings are great fun to imagine how they were made, real works of art.
I LOVE the open face turkey sandwich. The only problem is they give you so much turkey you have to take a nap afterwords.
For a quick stop with super large portions this is the place! you can almost just do a meal and appetizer for two and have plenty.
