First, I wanted to thank everyone at Grass Roots for having us as their guest for the STBE event this past Saturday. It was indeed a sweet get-together. Grass Roots is pretty much everything that comes to mind when you think of a local ice cream spot… cozy place out in the country, family-owned, dozens of home-made flavors, nothing artificial, and lots of SMILES from the whole group! Everything they did said«Thank you so much for coming to us!!» Bravo!

A great warm weather Unilocal Elite Event! Thank you to Emily and Unilocal and the great folks at Grass Roots Creamery! It was great to see my fellow Unilocalers on such a gorgeous day. A perfectly sunny not too hot and not too cold day. A perfect day for ICECREAM!!! We sampled ice cream until we nearly became lactose intolerant! From the 3 Unilocal Flavors of Candied Ginger, Maple Bacon, and Coffee caramel chocolate chip to Blueberry Pie(that looked so blue-ish purple that they had a note on it saying the color was natural!) to Birch Ice Cream and Root Beer Float, Grass Roots had it all. The most amazing part for me was just how rich the base flavors were on their own. Truly astounding texture and mouth feel to the ice cream; oh yes Virginia, this ice cream was churned with care! One of my favorite flavors was the Salted Caramel Bacon Brittle aka Heaven!(I bought a quart to bring home with me!) This was incredibly rich and had a great texture to it. I will return to Grass Roots this summer with a car full of friends!

So a) if Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the Summer and b) the thermometer is flirting with the 80 degree mark, what is a better way to celebrate the start of Summer on a hot day by surrounding yourself with some sweet Unilocalers and tasting an amazing variety of lovingly-made by-hand ice cream from the good folks at Grass Roots Creamery? This was a very enjoyable event that saw a few dozen Unilocalers sample just about every frozen creation in the Grass Roots body of work. An endless combination and permutation of chocolate chips, bacon, almonds, bananas, coconut, fruits, coffee, cookies, graham crackers, whipped up in heavenly batches of chilled sweetness. And to make the afternoon even better, three of our Unilocaler created flavors were chosen by Grass Roots and produced for our consumption and voting. The finalists were Coffee Caramel Chocolate Chip, Maple Bacon, and Candied Ginger. We tried as many of the flavors as our stomachs could allow, and it was great fun asking everyone«what kind is that?» and«ooooh I just had that, isn’t it great?» Our winning flavor was Madeline L’s Coffee Caramel Chocolate Chip, I hope it makes it to a permanent place of honor on Grass Root’s big menu board. We enjoyed a few humble words from our hosts and it was clear how much pride they have in their ice cream and its locally sourced ingredients. Thanks again to Emily for arranging this fun activity for us, and also providing some do-it-yourself glass bead– magnet craft projects for our artistic Unilocalers. And we also picked up some very nice Unilocal swag in the form of Unilocal beach towels! Let the Summer begin !!!
