Fantastic Honduran/Mexican/Texmex restaurant. As always, I am disappointed I didn’t discover this place sooner. They deliver a truly authentic cultural experience here. Don’t get me wrong, I like Mi Pueblos across the street, but as far as authenticity goes, El Anafre has it beat by a long shot. I’ll preface this review by saying that I lived in California for a while and have pretty high expectations as far as Latin American food goes. They offer something I’ve never heard of, the«Anafre,» which is a clay pot with a candle in it that is used to heat up a concoction of cheese or refried beans. Apparently this is a Honduras thing, similar to fondue, VERYGOOD. Ironically, this is what the restaurant is named after! Now for the other stuff, the pupusas are spot on. The tacos have HANDMADETORTILLAS. The flan is incredible(then again, when isn’t it?) Need I say more? Excellent stuff. This is my first time eating here but I’m a regular already :-)

Do not be put off by the outside appearance. It is a small place right next to a chinese takeout. They have only been open a few weeks. Get the refried beans. The owner makes them herself from pinto beans. Much better than the standard you find at all the other Tex Mex restaurants. Portions were good sized and inexpensive. My wife and I spend $ 28 and that included a shared appetizer. Downside to the restaurant is that they do not have a soda fountain, so everything is in bottles. Kind of odd, but they are just getting started.

This place is super cute. I went there with a couple of friends on the way to the airport. We originally planned to go to a tex mex place across the street for a quick bite before my flight, but it was clearly a very long wait, so we quickly changed plans and found El Anafre across the street. I’m super stoked that we braved into this little place! It doesn’t look like much from the outside — but inside was clean(albeit sparse). It seems to market itself as tex mex, but the menu was more Central American. Having lived a few months in that region, I was ecstatic once I realized what we found! Unfortunately, I wasn’t very hungry, so just ordered a few pupusas with plans to steal some of my dining companions’ fried plantains. The food was presented without any frills, but it didn’t really need any. The pupusas were excellent — classic corn meal, crispy on the outside and soft within and not with too much cheese, accompanied by the traditional pickled cabbage mixture. I enjoyed the plantains as well — and especially that they came with cream and refried beans. Also, I ordered a horchata to drink, which I’ve not seen outside of Central America, and it was lovely and not too sweet. My friends ordered and egg and chorizo baleda and the enchilada atrachas, both of which looked amazing. I was pleasantly surprised that the enchilada wasn’t the typical tex mex type but was instead classically central American(stacked on a crispy tortilla rather than rolled and covered in sauce). So, in all, the food was very good — and at a bargin price. The only reason why its not a 5 star for me is that the different dishes came out at very different times. But, this was overshadowed by the fact that the people who ran the place were very, very sweet. It’s clearly a family business that cares about what they’re trying to do. I’m sure they’ll get the timing better as they settle in. They were eager for any feedback on how they could improve. I really hope that if anyone is driving through this area and looking for a quick bite that they give El Anafre a chance!

This place is just getting started but we quite enjoyed our meal here. They had good food, very friendly service at affordable prices. We were actually trying to eat across the street before dropping off a friend at the airport, but they were too crowded so we ended up here. The menu has both South American and Tex Mex options but we stuck with the South American because that seemed to be what they were best at. We had three pupusas which were lovely, one South American style enchilada platter with beef, and egg, and a tortilla folded over with chorizo, and egg. Everything was tasty. We also got one order of fried platains. We also got two horchatos and a tamarind juice. The total bill was like $ 26 before tip, incredibly cheap for more food than we could finish. Even better the restaurant is clearly family owned and they were incredibly friendly. The waitress was happy to help us recommend dishes, tell us what things were, and even tell us when we ordered too much. They also asked us afterwards what they could do better since they were just getting started. My only mild complaint was that the timing of the food coming out could have been improved. Still, I quite enjoyed El Anafre and would go back for sure next time I’m near Glen Burnie.
