The worst dental experience ever! This was my first appointment with Dr. Jang after many years of excellent dental care with my previous dentist who retired. I received a full mouth x-ray by Dr. Jang’s technician prior to the hygienist cleaning my teeth. During the cleaning of my teeth, the hygienist broke the filling off a lower front tooth. The tooth has never had a cavity as claimed by Dr. Jang. I accidentally broke the tooth about 8 years ago while biting down on a piece of walnut shell. The hygienist said that she would tell Dr. Jang what happened and he would smooth the edges before I went home. Dr. Jang came into the room shortly after the hygienist finished the cleaning and quickly looked at my teeth and the x-ray film. He made a few comments about my x-ray and said that there were three teeth that had cavities located under the old fillings that needed immediate attention. I asked him to explain and show me where the teeth with the cavities were located. I explained that my previous dentist never indicated that I had cavities or needed new fillings for any of the teeth he showed me and that my dentist had always complimented me on how well I took care of my teeth. He became defensive and grabbed his imaging screen and pictures to show me where the cavities were located. I couldn’t see anything different between these teeth and my other teeth that had old fillings. I asked him why he didn’t do a visual oral examination to check for possible ulcers and lesions as my previous dentist had always done. Seemingly surprised with my question, he mumbled something about my not stating any previous problems and that his hygienist never said she saw any problems during her exam or cleaning. I chose to ignore his excuses since he should have known it is his responsibility to do a visual oral exam regardless of what he is or isn’t told by me or his hygienist. He abruptly went on to another patient. He didn’t take the time to smooth the edges off the broken tooth. As he left, he handed me a «Proposed Treatment Plan» and told me to schedule with his receptionist to have the cavities and broken tooth fixed. He encouraged me to have them repaired as soon as possible to avoid the need for a root canal that could occur if left untreated. I explained to the receptionist that I would expect the tooth that was broken by the hygienist to be repaired without charging my insurance company or me. She said she would tell Dr. Jang and he would get back to me if there was a problem. Upon returning a few days later to have Dr. Jang repair the broken filling, I repeated to the receptionist that the repair to the broken tooth should not be charged to either my insurance company or me since it was a perfectly okay tooth before I came to this office. I received in the mail from my insurance company a charge from Dr. Jang for repairing the tooth. I then went to get a second opinion from another dentist in Gig Harbor as recommended by my insurance company. This dentist had over 15 years’ experience and was highly recommended by others. The dentist carefully reviewed all the x-rays done by Dr. Jang and found no cavities or the immediate need to replace any old fillings as claimed by Dr. Jang. He discovered in previous records that the broken filling on the lower front tooth was actually only 8 years old and should not have broken under normal use or cleaning. Two weeks later I received a termination letter for future services from Dr. Jang. In the letter he stated how great a dentist he was, how he wants his patients to be pleased with his services, and how I have shown displeasure by questioning why he didn’t do a thorough oral exam, take responsibility for the broken filling, and was reluctant to explain the cavities he found. Due to Dr. Jang’s arrogant and unprofessional behavior and the second opinion by another dentist, I was convinced that I needed to find another dentist.
